From Baengnyeonsa Temple to the Azalea Ridge: A 2.7 km Trail from a 1930 Mountain Temple to Bukhansan

Baengnyeonsa (白蓮寺) is a temple of the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism located at San 127-1, Suyu-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, or, under the road-name address system, at 142, 4.19-ro 20-gil, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. Tourism data from the Korea Tourism Organization explains that the temple was founded in 1930 through the devotion of Mrs. Lee Eun-sun. As it can easily be confused with temples of the same name in Gangjin and Eunpyeong, it is more accurate to search the map using “Baengnyeonsa (Gangbuk)” or the road-name address.

The temple lies on the southeastern foothills of Bukhansan, beside the hiking trail leading from the National 4.19 Democracy Cemetery toward Daedongmun. Gangbuk-gu has terrain shaped by Bukhansan’s granite peaks and steep slopes, and the area around Baengnyeonsa meets the upper reaches of Daedongcheon. In other words, this is not simply a place to visit as an urban temple; visitors need to understand where the route changes into a mountain trail in front of the temple and choose their schedule and footwear accordingly.

Suyu Station Exit 4 and the Gangbuk 01 Baengnyeonsa stop

The simplest public-transport option is to transfer from Suyu Station on Seoul Subway Line 4 to the Gangbuk 01 village bus. The Gangbuk-gu blog reporters recommend taking Gangbuk 01 from Exit 4 of Suyu Station and getting off at the Baengnyeonsa stop. Route information lists Baengnyeonsa as a stop between Academy House, the Tongil Education Center, and Suyu Station.

Gangbuk 01 is listed as having its first bus at 05:30 from the Academy House–Tongil Education Center terminus and at 05:55 in the direction of Suyu Station. Some sources list the last bus toward Suyu Station as departing at 00:00. However, bus timetables and intervals may change, so check real-time arrival information immediately before departure. After getting off at Baengnyeonsa, the walking section continues toward the valley and mountain trail, so a backpack is preferable to a large suitcase.

As no separate official temple website URL could be confirmed, it is safest to call in advance about matters that may vary by date, such as Buddhist ceremonies, rituals, and whether individual access is permitted.

A brief visit to the temple itself can take around 20–30 minutes, but walking onward to Daedongmun makes it an entirely different itinerary. The one-way distance from the Baengnyeonsa Park Ranger Post via Baengnyeonsa and the Jindallaeneungseon Ridge to Daedongmun is 2.7 km. Tourism information gives an estimated time of about 1 hour 20–30 minutes, while other hiking records suggest about 1 hour 40 minutes. Considering time for photography, rest, and adjusting to the incline, it is best to decide before setting out whether to see only the temple or continue with the hike.

2.7 km from Baengnyeonsa to Daedongmun: April on Jindallaeneungseon Ridge

Baengnyeonsa is a midpoint landmark on the Bukhansan Daedongmun course. The 2.7-km one-way trail from the Baengnyeonsa Park Ranger Post via Baengnyeonsa and Jindallaeneungseon Ridge to Daedongmun is introduced as a hike where visitors can enjoy spring flowers. The Korea Tourism Organization explains that azaleas bloom in clusters in sunny locations and that the ridge’s colors are most vivid in early to mid-April.

Some hiking records estimate about 25 minutes from the temple to the point where the trail joins Jindallaeneungseon Ridge and about 15 minutes from the entrance to Baengnyeonsa itself. The section ascending to Daedongmun may include stairs, dirt paths, and rocky terrain, so hiking shoes with good traction are recommended over sneakers. Immediately after rain, after sunset, or when wearing sandals with thin soles, it is better to limit the visit to the temple and postpone the ridge hike.

Safety precautions at the Daedongcheon entrance instead of water activities

The stream at the entrance to Baengnyeonsa is Daedongcheon, which Gangbuk-gu separately identifies as the water-quality monitoring point “Daedongcheon (Baengnyeonsa entrance).” Being beside a valley-side path is an advantage for summer walks, but the water level and condition of the streambed vary with the weather. Especially when rain is forecast or after heavy rainfall, avoid approaching the edge of the valley and remain on the hiking and pedestrian paths for safety.

Seoul City council materials concerning drowning accidents in Daedongcheon also mention the “Baengnyeonsa entrance, Bukhansan, Suyudong, Gangbuk-gu.” Do not let children play by the water or enter it even if it appears shallow. Rather than planning this as a destination for swimming or escaping the summer heat, it is more appropriate to understand it as a riverside passage connecting the temple with the entrance to Bukhansan.

A Gangbuk modern and contemporary history itinerary paired with the National 4.19 Democracy Cemetery

The downhill route from Baengnyeonsa connects with the National 4.19 Democracy Cemetery and the Gangbuk Youth Training Center stop. After Baengnyeonsa, the Gangbuk 01 route passes the Gangbuk Youth Training Center, Muryangsa Entrance, and National 4.19 Democracy Cemetery stops. By combining the 4.19 Democracy Cemetery with the hike, visitors can connect a temple visit on the foothills of Bukhansan with a site honoring the victims of the April 19 Revolution of 1960 on the same day.

However, after finishing the hike at Baengnyeonsa, it is better for energy management to take Gangbuk 01 downhill rather than force a walk all the way to the National 4.19 Democracy Cemetery. Conversely, if visiting the cemetery first and then ascending to Baengnyeonsa, decide in advance whether to continue hiking toward Daedongmun after the temple or return to the bus stop. Visitors who need a bus home should plan to descend toward the Baengnyeonsa stop before sunset.

Preparation closer to hiking equipment than to wheelchair or stroller access

Tourism data states that rental of equipment for infants is unavailable. Baengnyeonsa connects to Bukhansan hiking trails, and the route beyond Baengnyeonsa toward Jindallaeneungseon Ridge and Daedongmun is uphill mountain terrain. No official guidance confirming independent wheelchair or stroller access has been found. Visitors using wheelchairs or strollers should therefore call 02-990-7058 in advance to ask about the actual incline to the temple entrance and the accessible areas.

No official foreign-language assistance has been confirmed either. Foreign visitors visiting for the first time may find it helpful to save “Baengnyeonsa (Gangbuk),” “142, 4.19-ro 20-gil,” and “Gangbuk 01 Baengnyeonsa stop” on their phones so they can show the destination to the driver or nearby people. Inside the temple, avoid making loud phone calls, taking unauthorized photos inside the main hall, or using tripods that block passageways. Modest clothing that does not excessively expose the shoulders or knees is also advisable.
