The Place Where Rock Meets Pansori, Yeururak Is Back Again

Every summer, I look for something a little different to see in Korea, and this year what caught my eye was the National Theater of Korea's '2026 Yeururak Festival.' 'Yeururak' is short for 'There is our music here.' It started in 2010 and is a festival that collides traditional music with all kinds of genres, and this year marks its 17th edition. What I felt when I went in person was that this is quite different from the dignified kind of stage people usually imagine when they hear the words 'gugak performance.' A rock band meets a pansori singer, blues meets traditional Korean music, and even street dance shares the stage with traditional Korean music.

This year, it runs from July 3 to July 25, 2026, at two venues inside the National Theater of Korea: Haneul Theater and Daloreum Theater. A total of 12 performances will rotate; Haneul Theater starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and at 3:00 p.m. on Sundays, while Daloreum Theater starts at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and at 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Since different shows are held at the two theaters on the same day, the key before going is to first decide 'which theater and which date' you want to see. Singer-songwriter Lee Han-cheol serves as artistic director, and Yoo Taepyeongyang, a young vocalist from the National Changgeuk Company of Korea, serves as music director; this is said to be the first time someone from the popular music scene has taken on the festival's artistic director role.

First, Get Your Tickets — This Festival Has a 90% Seat Occupancy Rate

The first thing I want to tell you about is tickets. This festival is one that fills up every year, with a cumulative audience of about 88,000 and an average seat occupancy rate of around 90%. Neither theater is a large venue, so there aren't many seats, and popular artist performances sell out quickly. I was aiming for well-known acts like Kang San-ae and Sunwoojunga, so I gave up on the idea of buying tickets on site long before going. I recommend booking in advance on the National Theater of Korea website or Interpark. There are also package tickets that bundle several performances together, but these can sell out early too, so if you've decided on your schedule, it's best to hurry.

If you're an overseas traveler, you don't need to worry much about payment. Online reservations can be paid for by card, and the on-site ticket booth also accepts credit and debit cards. However, if you are using a discount, you must bring proof documents such as a student ID or pass card, and if you don't have them with you, you will have to pay the difference on site. Reserved tickets and on-site purchases are available from one hour before the performance starts, but the box office gets crowded right before showtime, so it is more comfortable to have your ticket in hand at least 30 minutes early. Once issued, tickets cannot be reissued if lost, so keep them safe.

The Shuttle Bus from Dongdaegu Station Is the Right Answer

The National Theater of Korea is at the foot of Namsan, so if you go there for the first time, you may feel that it is 'farther from the subway station than you expected.' The nearest station is Dongdaegu Station on Subway Line 3, and if you walk from Exit 6 it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to the theater, but because it is uphill you may work up a sweat on a summer evening. So I took the free shuttle bus. It departs in front of the 'Namsan Circular Bus Stop' at Exit 6 of Dongdaegui Station and runs about every 10 minutes from one hour before each performance until 20 minutes before it starts. For example, if the performance starts at 7:30 p.m., buses leave at 6:30, 6:40, 6:50, 7:00, and 7:10. If you don't want to walk, you can also take Namsan Circular Bus No. 01 from Exit 6.

Because it is an evening performance, the return trip matters even more, but fortunately the shuttle bus runs again after the performance ends in front of Haneul Theater. It departs from the National Theater of Korea, passes Exit 1 of Dongdaegu Station, and takes you toward Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Lines 2, 4, and 5). It only runs for a limited time after the performance ends, so once the curtain call is over, I recommend heading out right away rather than lingering. The parking lot is small, so if you come by car, you may feel rushed by the entry time; taking the subway and shuttle combination is by far the easiest option.

Why It's Fine Even If You Are Unfamiliar with Gugak: 'Yeururak Pre-Talk'

"Can foreign visitors enjoy a gugak performance if they don't even understand the lyrics?" I wondered about that too. But this year, the side program 'Yeururak Pre-Talk' was introduced, which helped a lot. For about 10 minutes after the performance begins, music critic Im Hee-yoon and artistic director Lee Han-cheol personally come on stage and point out the musical characteristics of that day's work and what to pay attention to. It is conducted in Korean, but simply knowing that this kind of guidance exists makes the structure of the stage much easier to understand. In fact, the charm of Yeururak lies more in the 'collision of sounds' than in the lyrics. The texture of geomungo meeting electric guitar, and pansori vocal technique laid over pop melodies, can be felt in the body even if you don't know the language.

For reference, English interpretation or subtitles are not confirmed as a standard inclusion, so if you want to understand every detailed comment, it is enough to have a companion or a translation app nearby. The performances are generally open to elementary school students and older, so they are fine for families, and since they are indoor performances where you sit and focus only on the music, you don't need to worry about the weather. However, the path to the theater is an outdoor uphill climb, so in summer bring light clothing, a bottle of water, and comfortable shoes.

So, Who Is It Recommended For?

If you're curious about 'real Korean music' beyond K-pop, or if you like experimental stages where tradition and modernity blend, Yeururak is worth adding to your Seoul summer itinerary. It's hard to find another place where beloved Korean musicians like Kang San-ae, Sunwoojunga, Harim, and Ahn Ye-eun share the stage with gugak performers. If you secure your tickets in advance, the shuttle bus takes care of the rest. I hope you get to experience that 'strange yet enchanting' scene of our music inside a cool theater.
