Cheonsuman, where reclaimed land from the 1980s became a feeding ground for migratory birds
Seosan Birdland is an ecotourism facility established at 655-73 Cheonsuman-ro, Buseok-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, at the Cheonsuman migratory bird habitat. Cheonsuman lies at the central point of the migratory route connecting northern Siberia and Manchuria with Southeast Asia, while its large lakes and extensive farmland serve as landmarks and feeding grounds for migrating birds.
The marine environment changed considerably when seawalls, freshwater lakes, and large-scale farmland were created through the Seosan A and B District reclamation project in the 1980s. However, fallen grains remaining in rice fields after harvest and the expanded water surface created favorable conditions for waterfowl. Seosan City launched the “Cheonsuman Migratory Bird Habitat Ecological Park Project” after being selected for a Ministry of Environment support program in 2002, and Birdland was planned as a hub connecting migratory bird conservation, education, and tourism.

The museum exhibitions alone can be seen quickly, but allowing about 1.5 to 2 hours is appropriate when the observatory and outdoor walking routes are included.

As the Korea Tourism Organization’s accessible tourism information states that admission is allowed until one hour before closing, it is safest to plan to arrive before 17:00 in summer and before 16:00 in winter.
Individual admission fees are KRW 3,000 for adults, KRW 2,000 for youths and military personnel, and KRW 1,500 for children. For groups of 20 or more, the fees are KRW 2,000 for adults, KRW 1,500 for youths and military personnel, and KRW 1,000 for children. Seosan citizens and honorary citizens pay KRW 1,500 for adults and KRW 1,000 for youths and military personnel, while children enter free of charge. The main contact number is 041-661-8051. In general, however, migratory birdwatching programs have been operated at Cheonsuman from March to May and October to December, while the museum’s winter hours are 10:00 to 17:00 from November to February. To observe birds at a distance, prepare a telescope or binoculars, and avoid occupying the area in front of the observatory railing for a long time.
In February 2025, hooded crane birdwatching tours operated three times a day on Saturdays and Sundays in Cheonsuman A District, and a hooded crane-themed birdwatching tour was also announced for 2026. These are examples of seasonal events and should not be regarded as permanent programs. Therefore, if you plan to visit Ganwolam after Birdland, check the tide times around Ganwoldo through the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency’s tide information first.
A practical day itinerary is to visit the Migratory Bird Museum and Nest Observatory in the morning, join a seasonal birdwatching program if one is available, and then travel to Ganwol Lake and Ganwolam. Conversely, this is not an urban tourist destination with a dense concentration of restaurants, cafés, and public transportation, so it may not suit travelers expecting tightly scheduled transfers without a private car or pre-booked local transportation.
