If you are aiming to see the sunrise at dawn in winter, it is safer to familiarize yourself with the route between the beach and the public parking lot during the daytime on the previous day. Viewing conditions vary with waves, sea fog, and clouds, so it is better to treat this as a place for a possible scenic experience rather than one that guarantees a particular view, and to check both the sunrise time and the weather forecast.
A beach route connecting Saebit Waemok, the sandy beach, and the Around-the-World Yacht Exhibition
The representative sculpture on Waemok Village Beach is “Saebit Waemok,” based on the shape of a heron. According to Dangjin City information, a photo zone has been created on the sandy beach, and the beach and rocky shore areas provide separate spaces for swimming and rock fishing. If you plan to walk through both the sandy section, where sand may get into your shoes, and the rocky shore section, sneakers with good traction are suitable.
Following the beach leads to the Around-the-World Yacht Promotional Exhibition Hall. On the first floor, visitors can view Captain Kim Seung-jin’s unpowered around-the-world yacht voyage free of charge. Dangjin City states that yacht experience programs connected with the waters in front of Waemok Village are operated in summer at the education hall on the second floor. Free admission and open year-round at Waemok Village; check separate summer swimming operations
Waemok Village itself has no admission fee and, according to Chungnam tourism information, is open year-round for use at any time. The tourist destination’s basic address is listed as 15-5 Waemok-gil, Seokmun-myeon, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, but drivers can also use the public parking lot address, “847-71 Gyoryo-ri, Seokmun-myeon, Dangjin-si,” as a destination.
During the beach opening period in July and August, a water park including a water slide is listed as operating. However, the beach opening dates and the operating hours, fees, and weather-related suspension policy for the water facilities are not fixed information, so reconfirm them by phone before departure. Dangjin City’s past beach operation notices included the deployment of safety personnel and operation of a comprehensive situation room, but the scope of this year’s operations should be checked separately.
From the public parking lot at 847-71 Gyoryo-ri to the beach: a convenient approach by car
Waemok Village has parking lots and restrooms, and Dangjin City’s tourism page lists the public parking lot location as 847-71 Gyoryo-ri, Seokmun-myeon. A Chungnam tourism visitor review mentions free parking for approximately 140 vehicles, but during peak season and sunrise festival days, on-site traffic control and full capacity are possible, so this should not be regarded as a guaranteed capacity. On sunrise event days or weekends, allow for alternative parking and walking rather than arriving at dawn solely to secure a parking space.
Road access continues from National Route 38 and Local Routes 633 and 647 via Local Route 615. Barrier-free tourism information states that the Songak and Seosan interchanges on the West Coast Expressway are relatively close. This is not a place connected by a walk from a railway or subway station, and because it is a coastal area with infrequent rural bus service, it is preferable to consider a rental car, private vehicle, or taxi after arriving at Dangjin Bus Terminal.
Tides and rock fishing: how to include low tide in your itinerary
Waemok Village is a coast where rocky shores are exposed as well as sandy beaches. Official information lists rock fishing among the available facilities and activities, and the scenery and difficulty of moving along the swimming, walking, and fishing routes vary with the tides. When the tide is out, more tidal flats and exposed rocks appear, but you should return toward the beach before the tide begins to come in.
Recent visitor reviews repeatedly advise checking the tide times before departure because of the large tidal range characteristic of the West Sea. Especially when traveling with children, choose shoes that secure the heel rather than sandals when descending to the rocks, and avoid wet rocks and areas covered with seaweed. Dangjin City’s tourism planning materials classify Waemok Village, along with Sapgyoho and Nanjido, as one of Dangjin’s three Chungcheongnam-do designated tourist destinations. This is the background to the transformation of a small coastal village known for sunrise viewing into a tourist destination equipped with a public parking lot, beach facilities, and waterfront spaces.
In 2022, Dangjin City completed the “Waemok Village Tourist Destination Coastal Deck Improvement” project, replacing 2,435㎡ of aging coastal decks. From 2023 to 2025, it pursued the “Installation of a Sunset Observatory and Surrounding Environmental Improvement at Waemok Village Tourist Destination” project, with a budget of 2 billion won. Therefore, when visiting, it is more accurate to check the current deck access conditions and whether construction or restricted access is in effect around the observatory with the Visitor Center rather than relying on old guide photographs.
Extending the day with the Janggohang sea cave and Waemok Auto Camping Site
Near Waemok Village, there is a sea cave in the direction of Janggohang, allowing visitors to add coastal scenery after viewing the beach. Chungnam tourism user reviews and Dangjin City tourism content present the Janggohang sea cave as part of an itinerary visited together with Waemok Village. However, the area around the cave is affected by tides and slippery rocks, so it is better to check the tide times and access conditions first rather than moving there immediately after sunrise.
Even without an overnight stay, allow one to two hours to explore Waemok Village focusing on the beach, Saebit Waemok, and the exhibition hall. If you plan to see both sunrise and sunset, at least half a day including the daytime is necessary. If you plan to camp, Waemok Auto Camping Site is located at 16-16 Waemok-gil, Seokmun-myeon, and reservations are handled through the Dangjin Marine Camping Park website. Do not assume that on-site camping will be available; first check the available rooms and sites for your chosen date.
