Summer night opens with a beer by the Geumgang River under the night view of Gongsanseong Fortress

There are festivals that truly begin only after the sun goes down. The Gongju Yabam Beer Festival is exactly like that. When the Geumgang riverside, heated all day by the sun, turns dark, lights come on at Gongsanseong Fortress across the river, and beer booths and the stage light up below. I liked that this festival can be summed up in one sentence: “a cold beer by the river on a summer night.” There’s no complicated concept—just river breeze, sunset, and draft beer, and that’s all.

This festival is a summer nighttime event planned directly by Gongju City, and the second edition in 2026 will be held for three days from August 14 (Fri) to 16 (Sun) at the Geumgang Sinwan Park area. Operating hours are from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day. The first edition in 2025 ran from the 15th to the 17th, but since this is a new festival that started only recently, the dates vary slightly from year to year. Before visiting, I recommend checking the exact dates on the official page for that year. Gongju is famous for its chestnuts (sweet chestnuts), so the chestnut makgeolli and chestnut beer made from them are the festival’s signature drinks. You’ll find domestic and international beers, craft beers from local breweries, and traditional liquor all in one place.

A festival with a K-POP lineup that means business — how to enjoy it in front of the stage

Honestly, I didn’t expect much from a local beer festival lineup, but I was surprised when I saw the names. On the stage for the second edition in 2026, Kim Jang-hoon and Yoon Do-hyun Band will perform on the first day, COOL’s Lee Jae-hoon and MeloMance on the second day, and DJ DOC and 10CM on the third day. For foreign friends who like Korean pop music, these are singers whose names alone are exciting. In addition, the National Jazz Tap Dance Competition and performances by local artists keep the night stage lively without a break. For reference, the first edition in 2025 featured acts such as Jojazz, DJ New Jeansim, DJ Park Myung-soo, and Tac Show.

The stage can be watched freely at the festival without a separate ticket. If you want a good spot to see a popular artist’s performance, it’s best to get in front of the stage one or two hours before that act starts. Even during the first edition, the popular performances drew big crowds and seats filled up early. If, like me, you prefer to relax in the back while drinking beer, the grassy area a little away from the stage is actually cooler and more laid-back.

A foreign traveler’s day — from arrival to heading back

Before you go, you only need to decide two things: what to wear and how to get there. Since it’s a midsummer night in August, a short-sleeve shirt is enough, but there can be more wind at night by the river than you’d expect. Bring a thin shirt, and if you plan to sit on the grass, a picnic mat is useful. If you plan to play in the water zone, bring a change of clothes and a towel too.

Transportation is both the biggest weakness of this festival and something you should know in advance. Gongju is a city without a subway, so if you’re coming from Seoul or the capital area, you would usually take an express bus or KTX (Gongju Station), but from Gongju Station or the intercity bus terminal to Geumgang Sinwan Park, you need to travel by city bus or taxi. The event address is 368 Geumbyeok-ro (Sinwan-dong), and there are two large parking lots inside the park, making it convenient to come by private car or rental car. However, because this is a nighttime festival, city bus intervals can become sparse late at night, so if you came by public transportation, I strongly recommend installing a taxi app (Kakao T) in advance for the return trip. The event ends at 10 p.m., so if everyone leaves at once, it won’t be easy to get a taxi.

On-site payment is generally available by card and mobile payment, but some food trucks or booths may accept cash only. Bringing a small amount of cash, around 10,000 won, will make things easier. There may not be enough English on signs or menus, but if you point to the beer and just memorize the name of the chestnut makgeolli, ordering shouldn’t be a big problem. Restrooms are provided as public toilets near the park entrance and beside the parking lot, so using them was not inconvenient.

It’s not just beer — the water play zone and food

One reason this festival works well for families is the water play zone. Water play facilities such as water slides and inflatable pool areas are set up so children can cool off and have fun. While adults drink beer, children play in the water, making it comfortable not only for couples and friends but also for families with kids.

Food is offered through local restaurant booths, food trucks, and a snack zone. The selection is broad, from snacks that go well with a beer to hearty full meals. Since the lines at beer booths and food trucks were long during the first edition, it’s a good idea to secure food a little earlier and avoid the 8–9 p.m. peak time so you can enjoy the stage without waiting.

So, who is it recommended for?

It’s perfect for travelers who want to enjoy the atmosphere of a Korean local festival and a K-POP stage all in one affordable summer night, and also for families who want to let the kids play in the water too. With a cold beer in hand against the night view of Gongsanseong Fortress across the river, this unfamiliar city called Gongju will stay in your memory for a long time. It’s a worry-free summer night festival with very little chance of failure, as long as you prepare for public transportation in advance.
