Why the Seven Members of the Yu Hanggeom Family Were Enshrined on Seungamsan Mountain in 1801
Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground is home to the joint tomb of the Yu Hanggeom family, who were martyred in 1801. The remains of seven martyrs are enshrined here: Yu Hanggeom Augustine; his wife, Sin Hui; his second son, Yu Munseok John; his nephew, Yu Jungseong Matthew; his sister-in-law, Yi Yukhui; and the celibate married couple Yu Jungcheol John and Yi Sun-i Rugalda.
The history of the present holy site began when Father Baudounet of Jeonju Diocese’s Jeondong Parish and believers moved the family’s remains to the summit of Seungamsan Mountain on April 19, 1914. The holy site was designated Local Cultural Monument No. 68 of Jeollabuk-do on October 22, 1984.
What You See First on the Steep Ridge Behind Hanbyeokdang
Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground is located on the steep ridge of Seungamsan Mountain behind Hanbyeokdang. It is important to understand that this is not merely a place to look around the facilities on the flat ground at the entrance, but a mountain pilgrimage site extending to the martyr family cemetery and the Mountain Memorial Church at the summit.
The Way of the Cross to Golgotha, which leads from the parking lot and Montmartre Square to the summit, is a 200-meter prayer pilgrimage route. A 4-meter-high stone cross can be seen from Hanbyeokdang, and above the tomb of the married couple Yu Jungcheol John and Yi Sun-i Rugalda is the natural rock formation called the “Jesus-Mary Rock,” introduced as resembling Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
Getting There from Jeonju Express Bus Terminal by Buses 430 or 101
Travelers arriving in Jeonju for the first time can use Jeonju Express Bus Terminal as their starting point. From the terminal, walk 454 meters to the Kookmin Bank Geumam Branch bus stop, then take city bus 430 or 101 and get off at Seungam Village, as indicated in the official directions.
From the Seungam Village bus stop, it is another 452 meters on foot to the holy site. Since the bus intervals and total public transportation travel time are not provided, it is safest to allow extra time if traveling to attend Mass. The address is 120 Baramsswieneun-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province.
Free and Open Year-Round, but You Walk a Mountain Path to the Summit
Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground is listed as open year-round, continuously accessible, and free of charge. However, the exact operating hours for each facility and whether a ticket office operates are not separately provided. If you plan to visit the Mountain Church or the exhibition hall interiors, it is advisable to inquire first by calling 063-285-5755.
The official pilgrimage schedule’s Chimyeongjasan course includes Montmartre Square, Fatima Garden of the Virgin Mary, the Way of the Cross, and the Martyrs’ Cemetery, and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers on the mountain path has not been confirmed, so visitors using mobility aids should plan to focus on lower facilities such as the Hall of World Peace.
11 a.m. Pilgrim Mass and 3 p.m. Mountain Masses on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays
According to the official information for 2026, Pilgrim Mass is held every day at 11 a.m. in the Temple of Mercy at the Pilgrim Church. Mountain Mass is held at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at the Mountain Church, so visitors wishing to climb to the summit cemetery and participate in Mass should arrive at the lower area well in advance.
Confession is held 20 minutes before Mass. The Saturday Sacred Rosary devotion takes place every Saturday at 3 p.m., changing to 5 p.m. from June through August. During Lent, daily dawn Mass is held at 5:30 a.m. Since Mass schedules are religious events, visitors should check the official information for their intended date of visit.
Moving from Rugalda Square to Montmartre Square After Parking
The official information lists the Pilgrim Parking Lot, the Hall of World Peace Parking Lot, and the Hanok Village Parking Lot. The Pilgrim Parking Lot is located beside Rugalda Square, and the recommended route leads from the parking lot along the riverside to Montmartre Square and the Way of the Cross.
The Korea Tourism Organization’s information also states that parking is available, but the number of spaces and parking fees have not been confirmed. In your vehicle navigation system, enter the address notation “Baramsswieneun-gil” exactly as written, and do not assume that you can drive to the summit. The cemetery and Mountain Church are areas accessed by walking along the pilgrimage path.
How to Finish Your Pilgrimage at the Hall of World Peace, Opened in 2021
The development project for Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground was promoted in 1981 as part of the Jeonju Diocese commemorative projects for the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Church in Korea, and the groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 5, 1988. The consecration ceremony for the Mountain Memorial Church was held on May 9, 1994, and the Martyrs’ Monument was erected on July 17, 1949.
The construction project for the Hall of World Peace was carried out from 2016 to 2020, with a total project cost of 28 billion won. Construction began on September 17, 2019, and the hall opened on October 16, 2021. The first floor contains Baudounet Hall, a restaurant, a religious goods shop, and a café; the third floor contains Yu Hanggeom Hall, seminar rooms, and the Sharing Room of the Pastoral Counseling Center.
A 7.1-Kilometer Pilgrimage Extending to Jeondong Cathedral and Hanok Village
The full walking pilgrimage route along Chimyeongja-gil is 7.1 kilometers, with an official estimated time of 2.5 hours. From Chimyeongjasan Holy Ground to the Jeonju Prison Martyrdom Site is 2.6 kilometers, taking about 40 minutes; from the Jeonju Prison Martyrdom Site to Jeondong Cathedral and Pungnyeonmun Gate is 1.2 kilometers, taking about 18 minutes.
From Jeondong Cathedral and Pungnyeonmun Gate to the Chorokbawi Martyrdom Site is 500 meters, about 8 minutes; from Chorokbawi to the Seocheongyo Martyrdom Site is 680 meters, about 11 minutes. From the Seocheongyo Martyrdom Site to Supjeongi Holy Ground is 2.1 kilometers, about 34 minutes. Therefore, connecting Jeonju’s Catholic martyrdom sites greatly increases the walking burden compared with visiting Chimyeongjasan alone.
What to Observe in the Prayer Areas and Programs Requiring Reservations
The holy site describes itself as a place of prayer and asks visitors to refrain from drinking, entertainment, and loud behavior that could disturb other pilgrims’ prayers. Protect trees, flowers, and grass; do not pick plants or herbs; and take your own rubbish with you. The available information does not confirm whether photography is prohibited or whether English information and audio guides are available.
Groups may make advance reservations for a tour and guide. The traditional Korean music musical “My Beloved, My Love,” honoring the martyrs, is listed as lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes, requiring advance reservations, with an admission fee of 20,000 won. Performance times can be adjusted for groups of 100 or more. A past schedule at the Hall of World Peace included an 11 a.m. Mass, a 1 p.m. Chimyeongjasan pilgrimage, and a 4 p.m. performance.
