Best Time to Visit
Yangnim-dong Historic and Cultural Village is best visited in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). The weather is comfortable for walking, making it ideal for exploring the alleys and modern cultural heritage sites at a relaxed pace.
Within the day, a visit between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM or 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM is recommended. It is less hot than midday, easier to move around, and generally less crowded.
Weekdays, Tuesday through Thursday, are the most convenient. Weekends and public holidays can be moderately to somewhat crowded as the number of visitors increases, but weekdays are generally fairly quiet.

Yangnim-dong Historic and Cultural Village is easy to reach by public transportation. For foreign travelers, it is convenient to take the subway or a bus and then walk the last section.
Subway
The nearest station is Namgwangju Station on Gwangju Subway Line 1. It is about a 12-minute walk from Namgwangju Station. After exiting the station, head toward Yangnim-dong.

You can use the following bus routes: Cheomdan 09, Jiwon 25, Suwan 03, Sunhwan 01A, Geumho 36, Geumho 518, Bongseon 37, Geumnam 55, Songjeong 98, Suwan 49, Jiwon 152.
Main bus stops are as follows.
- Jeonnam National University Hospital / Namgwangju Market: take Cheomdan 09, then about a 10-minute walk after getting off
- Namgwangju Station: take Jiwon 25 or Suwan 03, then about a 12-minute walk after getting off
Walking
After getting off at Namgwangju Station or the Jeonnam National University Hospital / Namgwangju Market stop, follow the signs to Yangnim-dong Historic and Cultural Village. Since there are many alleys in the village, comfortable shoes are recommended.
Photo Spots
- Holly tree hill photo zone: This is an official photo spot near the site of Missionary Woo Il-seon's residence within Yangnim-dong Historic and Cultural Village. Stand in front of the photo zone and take a shot so that the hill and surrounding buildings appear together. From late morning to early afternoon, the light is soft and good for portraits.
- In front of Missionary Woo Il-seon's residence: If you shoot from the front yard or entrance path where the building can be seen at a glance, you can capture the atmosphere of modern architecture well. Standing slightly at an angle toward the front of the building adds depth. Morning is the best time for clean shots.
- Around the Owen Memorial Hall: It is connected to the walking route through Yangnim-dong Historic and Cultural Village, so it is easy to visit together. If you shoot from a low angle with the memorial hall facing the camera, the classic atmosphere is emphasized. In the afternoon, the warm color tones make for better photos.
- Front road of Choi Seunghyo House: This is a good place to capture both the exterior of a traditional house and the atmosphere of the alley. Take photos facing the front of the house or the main gate. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is ideal for quiet and natural street photos.
- Alley next to the hanok cafe: The area around the hanok cafe next to the photo spot is suitable for atmospheric, calm photos. If you shoot toward the cafe exterior or deeper into the alley, you can capture both the hanok and the village mood. A late afternoon visit is ideal for soft natural light and a cozy atmosphere.
Night View
The night of Yangnim-dong Historic and Cultural Village is characterized by a quiet and atmospheric mood. Lights added around early 20th-century Western-style buildings such as Yangnim Church and the Owen Memorial Hall, as well as traditional houses like Lee Jang-woo House and Choi Seunghyo House, create a different charm from the daytime.
In particular, the observation tower offers a panoramic view of the village nightscape, and the lights running along the trees softly illuminate the walking paths, making it good for photography. The art pieces along the cultural street can also be enjoyed at night, making this a suitable course for a light evening stroll.
The recommended time is after 6:00 PM until around 8:30 PM. Right after sunset has the best atmosphere, and early evening is more comfortable than very late hours.
The night program known as 'Yangnim Moonlight Tour' is available. It is a nighttime tour where you walk through the lit-up village alleys and major buildings together, and it is a good idea to check in advance whether it is operating.
The observation tower and night-viewing spaces are open to everyone without an admission fee.

- Winter: It is a relatively quiet time to feel the village's historical atmosphere. Some gardens feature winter flowers, and in the evening the illuminated alley scenery adds a calm charm. Since the sun sets early, it is best to visit in the early afternoon.

A representative modern cultural heritage site is a building known as the oldest existing Western-style house in Gwangju. It is believed to have been built in 1910, and the story goes that it was rebuilt after a fire in 1920.
