On the evening of the last Friday in August, if you arrive at Jangan 1 Riverside Park as the sun is slowly setting, the air already feels different. The heat of the day cools little by little over the river, and jazz melodies drift from the stage. This is the venue for the Dongdaemun-gu Beer Festival, officially called the 'Brew Brew Beer Factory.' In 2025, it runs for two days, from Friday, August 29 to Saturday, August 30, every evening from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Held every year in the last week of August, it is Dongdaemun-gu's signature summer festival, bringing together domestic craft beer breweries, food trucks, and water-stage performances. What impressed me most was the riverside setting. Even though it is in the middle of central Seoul, the wind blowing along the river makes it surprisingly comfortable to sit there, even on a midsummer evening.

In fact, this festival is a new event that started only in 2024. But about 30,000 people visited over the two days in its first year, and surveys recorded 97% satisfaction and 98% willingness to revisit. For a newly launched local festival, those results were exceptional, so in 2025, its second year, the scale grew even larger.

Since this is a beer festival, beer is naturally the star, but the key point is that it is not major commercial beer brands; breweries from all over the country gather here. In 2025, 10 well-known domestic craft beer breweries participated. Regional favorites such as Sokcho's 'Craftroot,' Tongyeong's 'Rheindouich,' and Gapyeong's 'Kramerie' brought their own ales and lagers. It is fun to compare them one by one. On top of that, popular food-truck items such as kimchi noodle rolls and Turkish ice cream are available.

What I especially liked was the local win-win booth. The Dongdaemun-gu Traditional Merchants Association also ran sales booths selling neighborhood specialty dishes such as skate and tteokgalbi. Skate as a snack for craft beer is such an interesting pairing; foreign friends would probably find it especially unusual. For reference, in 2024 there were complaints that some menu prices were too high, but in 2025 the organizers negotiated with vendors from the selection stage and adjusted prices to a more reasonable level. It was nice to see the organizers directly address the pricing issue.

A night of jazz, outdoor movies, and even a 'movie zone'

If you think this is just a place to drink beer and leave, think again. The stage program is surprisingly substantial. On the first day of 2025, the 29th, the fusion Korean traditional music band 'OWNDO' and 'Jazz Step Village' opened the event. The OWNDO performance was linked to the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts' 'Accompanying Everyone with Art' project. On the second day, the 30th, 'Han Seok-gyu Trio,' 'Haya Quartet,' 'Kwon Ye-seong Band,' 'Hye-won Trio,' and 'Cozy Jazz Office' performed in succession, spanning everything from classic jazz to bossa nova. Jazz flowing from a stage over the water, with beer in hand, makes for a moment you can enjoy simply by feeling the atmosphere, even if you do not understand the language.

As the night deepens, the 'Movie Zone' becomes the highlight. On the 29th, in cooperation with Dapsimni Film Media Art Center, the animated film Robot Dreams was screened outdoors as part of 'Under the Moonlight, Movie Picnic'. It is a camping-like night where you sit on the grass with a beer in hand and watch the screen instead of the stars. In the game event zone, there was also an electronic darts experience area sponsored by Phoenix Dart, and participants could join by presenting a receipt issued at the festival.

First, the reassuring news. This festival is free to enter. No need to worry about ticket reservations or sold-out admissions; you can just show up. However, beer and food must be purchased separately at each booth, so bring your wallet. Payment methods may vary by booth, so carrying a bit of cash will help you avoid awkward moments in line.

As for directions, Jangan 1 Riverside Park is located at 24-1 Jangan-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, along the Jungnangcheon stream. The nearest subway station is Janghanpyeong Station on Line 5. From there, you walk down toward Jungnangcheon, but because it is a riverside path, it is best to pay close attention to signs as you go down. Since this is a nighttime festival that ends at 10 p.m., the trip home matters; check the last-train time on Line 5 and late-night bus routes in a map app before leaving. Because it is by the river, it may be tricky to get a taxi late at night.

One more thing. In 2024, the food queues were a bit crowded, but in 2025 the venue was moved to a wide open lot without riverside facilities, which improved the issue. Still, 7 to 8 p.m. is the busiest time, so if you want to enjoy it more leisurely, I recommend arriving early around opening time at 5 p.m. Since this is an outdoor lawn event, a picnic mat, mosquito repellent, and a thin outer layer will keep you comfortable in the night breeze.
