Mount Achasan in Seoul, linking the fortresses that have guarded the Han River since 475 and the 295.7 m ridge
Mount Achasan is a 295.7 m mountain on the border of Gwangjin-gu, Seoul and Guri-si, Gyeonggi-do, where you can experience both the Goguryeo fortress group and a ridge with views of the Han River. It is about a 15-minute walk from Exit 1 of Gwangnaru Station to Achasan Oullim Garden and Oullim Square, and it takes about 90 to 150 minutes to reach the summit depending on your fitness and chosen route.

661 Cheonho-daero is not the mountain entrance, but in front of Exit 5 of Achasan Station
Jeongseong Building at 661 Cheonho-daero and the coordinates 37.551960, 127.090077 are an area near transit, about 50 m from Exits 1 and 2 of Achasan Station. The starting point for climbing the mountain is not here, but Achasan Oullim Plaza and Oullim Garden in Gwangjang-dong, Gwangjin-gu. If this is your first visit, set your map destination to "127 Walkerhill-ro, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul" or "370-3 Gwangjang-dong" to reach the trail and garden entrance more accurately.
Achasan is a mountain connecting Gwangjin-gu and Guri-si, and the main entrance on the Seoul side faces Gwangnaru Station. The official Achasan Management Office phone number is 02-450-1655, and inquiries for Oullim Garden information are listed as 02-450-1192. The entire mountain is open 24 hours a day and admission is free, so there is no need to look for a ticket booth.

The 475 battle for control of the Han River basin left behind a group of 17 historic forts
The reason Achasan was historically important despite being a low mountain lies in its terrain, which overlooks the Han River, Jungnangcheon, Wangsukcheon, and the eastern transportation routes. After King Jangsu of Goguryeo captured Hanseong Baekje in 475, Goguryeo is interpreted to have built forts in this area and used them as a forward base for defending the Han River basin. About 20 forts have been identified along the ridgelines of Achasan, Yongmasan, and Mangusan, and 17 of them have been designated historic sites.
A "fort" is a small defensive structure made of stone or wooden palisades. Excavations uncovered building remains, ondol underfloor heating systems, hearths, temporary forges, and iron cauldrons, showing that these were not simply observation points but spaces where troops were stationed. The name Achasan remains through overlapping records: the Acha and Adan spellings in the Samguk Sagi, and the Acha spelling in the Goryeosa and Joseon-era records; the current Chinese-character rendering is 峨嵯山.

Oullim Garden reopened in June 2023; read the forts in Wadang Garden
The former Achasan Ecological Park below the mountain, after more than 20 years and a period of aging, was renovated and reopened in early June 2023 as "Achasan Oullim Garden." This space is organized around six themes: wind, rose, fragrance, wadang, stone, and sound. If you only plan a short walk, it is better to set aside 40 to 60 minutes for the garden, wetland garden, and pine forest together rather than aiming for the summit.
The most Achasan-like scene is Wadang Garden, which uses stone walls modeled after Goguryeo roof-end tiles excavated from Hongryeonbong Fort. In the wetland garden, lotus, water lilies, and reeds grow alongside wooden decks, and the mermaid sculpture is a work by artist Kim Oh-seong, donated by the Walkerhill Hotel. A record from autumn 2023 introduced the Achasan Forest Library and the Children's Forest Experience Center as continuing behind the garden.
- Wetland garden: a low section walking along the pond and deck
- Wadang Garden: a section that reinterprets Goguryeo roof-tile patterns with stone walls
- Wind, rose, and fragrance garden: a section with hillside plantings and benches

Goguryeojeong, Haejami Plaza, and the summit: the difference between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes
The Gwangjin-gu recommended Course 1 runs from Achasan Oullim Garden through the pine forest, Nakta Hill, Chinsu Valley, and the Achasan Management Office to Mannam Plaza, taking about 1 hour 30 minutes. If you want to walk farther, Course 3 connects Mannam Plaza, the management office, Chinsu Valley, Goguryeojeong, the Achasan summit, Yongmasan summit, and the Ppeongtugi-gol entrance, with an official duration of about 2 hours 30 minutes.
If your goal is only the summit, a Seoul citizen reporter account notes about 50 minutes from the trailhead to Haejami Plaza and about 2 hours 10 minutes to the summit. Since there are sections where stone paths and stairs split apart, choosing the stairs instead of the faster path can reduce strain on the knees. If you continue on to Yongmasan after the summit, your descent point will change, so it is best to decide your return transportation before departure.

Gwangnaru Station Exit 1: 954 m and 15 minutes; Achasan Station Exit 2: about 20 minutes
The simplest approach is to walk from Exit 1 of Line 5 Gwangnaru Station, passing between Gwangjang Middle School and Gwangjang Elementary School, and continuing to the Achasan garden plots, Oullim Garden, and Oullim Plaza. The Seoul public reservation guide lists this route as 954 m, about 15 minutes. A separate Gwangjin-gu transportation guide states that from the same Exit 1 of Gwangnaru Station to Achasan Ecological Park takes about 15 minutes.
From Exit 2 of Line 5 Achasan Station, the route toward Myeonghwasa Temple and Dongui Elementary School is officially about 25 minutes, while a recent forest-trail program guide gives about 20 minutes to Oullim Plaza. For buses, it is convenient to take trunk routes 130, 300, or 370, or metropolitan bus 9301, and get off at Gwangnaru Station. From Gangbyeon Station, you can take village bus Gwangjin 01 and get off at the stop for Gwangjang Elementary and Middle Schools.
For wheelchairs or strollers, it is more realistic to set Achasan Donghaeng Forest Trail as the destination rather than the summit ridge. Donghaeng Forest Trail was developed as a gentle, barrier-free forest path, but the sections leading up to Goguryeojeong, Haejami Plaza, and the summit include stairs and stone paths. The tourist information screen near Gwangjang Elementary School provides information in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese.

Free 24-hour hiking and no parking at Oullim Plaza: pack differently
Achasan is open 24 hours a day all year round, and admission is free. However, the Achasan Ecological Park reference room operates from 09:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Mondays and public holidays. If you plan to visit only the reference room and garden without hiking the mountain, it is helpful to understand these two operating hours separately.
The Seoul public reservation page states that there is no parking space at Achasan Oullim Plaza or the meeting point for the history and culture tour. Therefore, using Line 5 Gwangnaru Station or Achasan Station is better than coming by car. In summer, bring at least 500 mL of water and a hat; after rain, wear shoes with strong traction to reduce slipping; on winter dawn hikes, bring crampons and warm gloves to handle the stair and rock sections more easily.
- Garden walk: sneakers, water, mosquito repellent
- Summit round trip: anti-slip shoes, windbreaker, snacks
- Winter sunrise: crampons, gloves, headlamp or phone light
Choose between the free history and culture tour and the 13.3 km Goguryeo History Trail
If you want to see Achasan's relics with explanations, you can use the Seoul Public Service Reservation "Achasan History and Culture Tour." The guided course covers Achasan Fortress, Goguryeojeong, and the group of forts around Achasan; according to previous notices, it ran on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 14:00, and on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 10:00, with a maximum of 10 individuals per application. The meeting point is in front of Seven Eleven at Oullim Plaza, 127 Walkerhill-ro.
If walking distance is your priority, Course 1 of the Achasan Goguryeo History Trail introduced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism starts at Gwangnaru Station and links Hongryeonbong Forts 1 and 2, Goguryeojeong, Haejami Plaza, and Achasan Forts 1 and 5, making a 7.8 km route of about 3 hours 40 minutes. The longer connected route is 13.3 km in total and takes about 4 hours 30 minutes, so on a first visit it is better to narrow the scope to Oullim Garden, Goguryeojeong, and Haejami Plaza and read the fort-group Guide boards to manage your route more efficiently.
Achasan Fortress is separate from the group of forts and is a perimeter stone fortress about 1 km around, located on the southern side of Achasan toward the Han River. Excavations uncovered roof tiles inscribed with "Bukhansanseong" and Silla-style artifacts, leading to the view that it was built by Silla around the 7th century as Bukhansanseong. The top of the fortress wall is a cultural heritage site and does not have sufficient safety facilities, so staying off the designated paths is best for both preservation and safety.
