Jungnang-gu’s Yongma Waterfall Park, Where a Quarry Cliff Became a 51.4-m Waterfall

How a 1961–1988 aggregate quarry became three artificial waterfalls

Yongma Waterfall Park is a former aggregate quarry in the area of San 1-4, Myeonmok-dong, at the foot of Yongmasan Mountain. Aggregate was extracted here from 1961 to 1988, and when development of a park covering approximately 50,570 pyeong began in 1990, the remaining rock cliff was used as the backdrop for artificial waterfalls.

The waterfalls consist of the central Yongma Waterfall, 51.4 m high; Cheongnyong Waterfall on the left, 21.4 m high; and Baengma Waterfall on the right, 21 m high. A pond of approximately 700 pyeong was created below the waterfalls, and the park area is listed as approximately 167,174 ㎡.

The park itself is a free outdoor park, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s official park information does not list regular closing days or a separate admission fee. However, the waterfall is not operated continuously; its operation varies according to weekdays, holidays, peak season, events, and weather conditions, and it is stopped during rain.

If the waterfall is your destination, it is safest to call the management office at 02-2094-2965 just before setting out and ask whether it will operate that day. As this is an outdoor space, the artificial-turf soccer field, tennis court, multipurpose plaza, and walking paths remain available for their intended uses even on days when the waterfall is not operating.

For public transportation, Exit 1 of Yongmasan Station on Seoul Subway Line 7 is the main reference point. Seoul Metropolitan Government information estimates about a 5-minute walk from the exit to the park, while another Seoul field guide indicates about 7 minutes. Allow 5–7 minutes depending on walking speed and the entrance location.

By bus, take routes 320, 2012, or 2227 and get off at the “Yongma Waterfall Park” stop. Drivers can look for the Yongma Waterfall Park public parking lot at 250-12 Yongmasan-ro, Jungnang-gu, but the Seoul park information lists only 72 parking spaces, so taking the subway is preferable on weekends and event days.

Why you need sneakers if you plan to walk along the 348 m Yongmasan Mountain ridge

Yongmasan Mountain is 348 m above sea level and connects to a ridge trail running from Manguri Park through Achasanseong Fortress to the vicinity of the rear entrance of Children's Grand Park. Visiting only the plaza in front of the waterfalls involves relatively level park paths, but if you plan to continue to the ridge trail, it is advisable to bring nonslip sneakers and water.

The park offers a multipurpose plaza, artificial-turf soccer field, tennis court, basketball court, badminton court, jokgu court, gateball court, children's play facilities, and sports-climbing facilities. Rather than just taking photos of the waterfalls and leaving, allowing about 45–90 minutes to include the plaza and sports facilities makes it easier to appreciate the park's scale.

The summer water park and winter snow-sledding area are seasonal programs, not permanent facilities

Temporary programs may be held at Yongma Waterfall Park depending on the season. The urban water-play facilities introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in 2024 were a summer program around the waterfalls, while the children's snow-sledding area in 2026 operated daily from 10:00 to 17:00 until February 8, with Mondays closed.

These operating examples should not be mistaken for the park's year-round operating hours. Supplementary facilities such as water-play areas and snow-sledding areas may vary each year in whether they are installed, their operating period, age requirements, and safety standards. Once your travel date is set, check the notices from Jungnang-gu or the Seoul Metropolitan Government again.

Check the park guidelines first regarding pets, cooking, and food

The Seoul park-use guidelines prohibit bringing food into the park to protect wildlife, as well as camping, cooking, and lighting fires. Visitors must take their rubbish with them and are instructed not to damage monuments, facilities, or plants.

Visitors are advised to refrain from bringing pets because of ecosystem conservation and possible inconvenience to other users. If you plan to use the sports facilities, your route may overlap with other activities in the park, so it is advisable to ask the management office in advance about bringing pets and the facility-use rules.
