A Night of Musical Sounds Floating Above a 1,400-Year-Old Pond, Gungnamji

Every year in early July, the Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival is held here. The 24th festival in 2026 will take place over three days, from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5, across the Seodong Park (Gungnamji) area. Because it is set against the legend of love between Baekje King Mu (Seodong) and Princess Seonhwa, the festival is filled with the keyword "love" throughout.

From my own visit, I found that the real charm of this festival comes after sunset. In the daytime, it feels like a peaceful place for a stroll while admiring the delicate lotuses, but at night it becomes an entirely different venue. The water musical "Gungnamji Fantasy," staged on the floating platform, is a multimedia show combining projection mapping, lasers, music, and fireworks all at once, and the scene where light pours over the pond filled with lotuses was unforgettable. Around 10 p.m., it concludes with the "Lotus Firework Art Show."

A Foreign Traveler's Day: From Seoul to Buyeo, and then to Gungnamji

First, one fact that will put your mind at ease: admission and parking are all free, and you can enter freely without any separate reservation. Since there is no need to buy tickets in advance, you do not have to worry about things selling out. Just keep in mind that canoe experiences, some craft and tea-ceremony programs, food, and parking shuttle costs are separate.

If you are coming from Seoul, the cleanest route is by intercity bus. From the Seoul Nambu Terminal, directly connected to Nambu Bus Terminal Station on Line 3, direct buses to Buyeo run more than 20 times a day, with the first bus at 06:30 and the last at 21:00, taking about 2 hours to reach Buyeo Intercity Bus Terminal. Seats fill quickly on weekends and during the festival period, so I recommend booking in advance through the T-money Intercity Bus app. One thing to know is that Buyeo has no express bus line, only intercity buses. From the terminal to Gungnamji it is a short taxi ride, and temporary parking lots and shuttle buses operate during the festival.

The site does not have a lot of English guidance. Still, language is not a major barrier when it comes to viewing the lotuses, walking around, and enjoying the performances. The route is simple and there are almost no slopes, so if you keep a map app open, it is a good place to explore slowly with family or parents. Payment at official booths and cafes can be made by card or mobile pay, but some food stalls in the style of a night market only accept cash, so bringing a small amount of cash will help you avoid surprises.

From Water Gun Battles to Canoes, Where Should You Spend Your Time?

There is quite a lot on the program, so it is more than just a lotus viewing trip. The large-scale water fight in the old downtown, the "Baekje Naval Training Camp Water Gun Battle," is perfect for beating the heat, and the "Seodong Night Parade" through Buyeo city turns the streets into a festival scene at night. For families, the "Yeonji Canoe Expedition," where you paddle directly on the pond, is popular. The view from a canoe cutting through the lotus patches is different from what you see from the walking path. There are also calm programs such as "Welcome to Seodong," which lets you experience the Baekje era, "123 Sabi Craft" with young Buyeo artists, and demonstrations of lotus-leaf tea ceremonies, so you can choose according to your taste.

The night-view zone, "Gungnamji at Night," is decorated with panoramic LEDs and atmospheric photo spots, and it was crowded with people taking pictures all evening. The performance lineup is also for all generations. It ranges from big stages like the KBS traveling concert to the Gungnamji hip-hop festival, youth dance competitions, and couple singing contests.

To Avoid a Wasted Trip — Time of Day and Weather Matter Half as Much

Be sure to remember that the lotuses are most fully in bloom in the morning. If you want to take proper photos, the best route is to walk around the pond early in the morning, escape the midday heat in the shade, and then come back out in the evening for the performances and night lighting. Early July is just before the main peak, so the scenery is still in its early stage with flowers just beginning to rise, but if you want to see the lotus landscape at its peak, returning once more after mid-July is also a good option.
