How to Find Nakhwaam from the Cliff on the Western Side of Busosan

Nakhwaam is not a separately ticketed attraction but a cliffside rock on the western side of Busosan within Busosanseong Fortress. The official address is 31 Buso-ro, Buyeo-eup, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and admission to Nakhwaam and Goransa Temple is included with a Busosanseong Fortress ticket.

Busosan spans Ssangbuk-ri, Gua-ri, and Gugyo-ri in Buyeo-eup and stands 106 m above sea level. Since the mountain rises from the flatland and meets the Baengma River, Nakhwaam is best understood not as a riverside viewing platform but as a cliffside viewpoint reached by following the path inside the fortress.

Points Where Wheelchairs and Strollers Are Blocked on the Stone Path to Nakhwaam

The route from Busosanseong Fortress toward Nakhwaam and Goransa Temple is a steep stone path. Buyeo-gun describes this section as difficult for wheelchair and stroller access, so travelers using mobility aids should first ask at the entrance how far access is possible.

Strollers and wheelchairs can be rented at Busosanseong Fortress, but availability for rental does not guarantee that the stone path toward Nakhwaam can be traversed. Credit cards are accepted, and pets are not allowed. Cultural interpretation services are also available, so visitors needing historical explanations can contact the tourist information center at 041-830-2880.

The Record in Samguk Yusa and the Name Carved During the Joseon Period

Buyeo-gun's information connects the tradition surrounding Nakhwaam with the reign of King Uija of Baekje, from 641 to 660. It explains that when the allied forces of Silla and Tang approached the royal capital by land and water, the palace women threw themselves into the Baengma River from this place to avoid humiliation, and that this story was recorded in Samguk Yusa.

It is said that the name Nakhwaam was later given by comparing the palace women's appearance to falling flowers. On the cliff, the characters for “Nakhwaam,” written by the Joseon scholar Uam Song Si-yeol, can be seen, showing that the present name and landscape are connected not only to the Baekje tradition but also to memories passed down through later generations.

Busosan, Once the Royal Palace Garden and an Evacuation Facility for Sabi Fortress City

The Gwanbuk-ri Archaeological Site and Busosanseong Fortress are historic sites associated with the royal palace during Baekje's Sabi period, from 538 to 660. In ordinary times, Busosan served as a rear garden for the Baekje royal family, while during war it became a place for defending the last stronghold of Sabi Fortress City. Thus, the route toward Nakhwaam is not simply a riverside viewpoint trail but part of the defensive area surrounding the royal palace.

The walls of Busosanseong Fortress were built using the rammed-earth construction technique and have been identified through archaeological research as a Baekje-period fortress. The name Busosan was first recorded in the Geography Section of the Annals of King Sejong. Buyeo-gun explains that the prevailing theory interprets “Buso” as meaning pine tree in the Baekje-era language, giving rise to the name “Solmoe,” meaning Pine Hill.

Adding a Pleasure Boat from the Goransa Pier to See the Cliffs from Below

Buyeo-gun explains that Nakhwaam's unusual cliff is more clearly visible when viewed from a boat traveling along the Baengma River. Therefore, dividing the itinerary between looking down at the cliff from the viewpoint inside the fortress and looking up at it from the river allows visitors to see the same place from different directions.

As confirmed for 2026, the adult fare for the Baengma River pleasure boat between Goransa and Gudeurae is 7,000 won one way and 11,000 won round trip. The children's fare is 5,000 won one way and 7,000 won round trip. Children under 3 ride free. The telephone number for Goransa Pier is 041-835-4690, and Gudeurae Pier is 041-835-4689. Visitors wishing to see the cliff from the boat should schedule the boat operation and travel to and from the pier separately.

Baekje Historic Sites in Buyeo to Combine with Nakhwaam

In addition to Nakhwaam and Goransa Temple, Busosanseong Fortress contains Gunchangji, Baekhwadang Pavilion, Sajaru Pavilion, Samchungsa Shrine, Seoboksa Temple Site, and Yeongillu Pavilion. However, official information describes the route toward Nakhwaam and Goransa as a steep stone path, so an itinerary attempting to visit every site at once should be adjusted according to walking ability and the season.

Tourist attractions around Busosanseong Fortress include the Five-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Gungnamji Pond, Buyeo Royal Tombs, Buyeo National Museum, and Baekje Cultural Land. Busosanseong Fortress was designated Historic Site No. 5 on January 21, 1963, and Nakhwaam was designated Chungcheongnam-do Natural Heritage Material No. 110 on May 17, 1984. To understand both daily life and defense at the Baekje royal palace, a suitable itinerary is to continue from Busosanseong Fortress to the Gwanbuk-ri Archaeological Site and Buyeo National Museum.
