Buyeo Gungnamji is a pond from the Baekje period in Buyeo-eup, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. It is known as an artificial pond associated with the royal detached palace of the Sabi period. According to the Samguk Sagi, it was created south of the palace in 634, the 35th year of Baekje King Mu, and was given the name "Gungnamji". Set within Buyeo's historic landscape near the lower Geumgang River, it is a great place to feel the atmosphere of Baekje royal capital culture. Buyeo Gungnamji has a different atmosphere in each season, but the best time to visit is autumn, when the weather is cool and ideal for a walk. For international travelers in particular, it is the most convenient choice because the weather is stable and walking is not too tiring.

The best times to visit are early on a weekday morning or late afternoon. Weekends tend to be busier, especially 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 6:00-7:00 p.m., which are the most crowded times. If you want a quiet visit, it is better to avoid these hours.

In terms of crowd levels, weekdays are relatively quiet, while weekends have more visitors but the area is spacious enough that it does not feel overly crowded. A stay of about 20-40 minutes is usually enough for an efficient visit.

In short, a weekday morning in autumn is the most recommended time to visit.

How Long to Stay

Gungnamji is not very large and admission is free, so 30-45 minutes is enough if you just want to take a quick look around the pond and walking paths. If you include photo taking and a leisurely stroll, 1-1.5 hours is appropriate, and if you plan to visit other attractions in Buyeo town as well, it is better to set aside about half a day.

How to Get There

Buyeo Gungnamji cannot be reached directly by subway, so the usual route is express/intercity bus + walking. For international travelers, this is the simplest method.

Subway

Buyeo does not have a subway station. If you are departing from Seoul, the most convenient way is to take the subway to Nambu Terminal Station and then take an intercity bus to Buyeo from Nambu Intercity Bus Terminal.

Bus

From Seoul, take a bus bound for Buyeo Intercity Bus Terminal from Nambu Intercity Bus Terminal. After arriving in Buyeo, Gungnamji is very close.

• Local bus: There are city buses, but the frequency is not very high, so if you do not have much luggage, walking is more practical.

Walking

From Buyeo Intercity Bus Terminal to Gungnamji it takes about 13-20 minutes on foot. It is relatively close, so even first-time visitors can get there easily.

Photo Spots

• Full view of Poryongjeong: Look for a spot on the lakeside walking path where the octagonal pavilion Poryongjeong in the center of the pond is directly visible. Shooting straight toward the pavilion captures the look of it floating on the water. Early morning or around sunset is the most atmospheric time.
• Capture lotus flowers and the pavilion together: In summer, try framing the shot so that Poryongjeong appears beyond the lotus flowers by the pond. If you set your camera toward the center of the pond, you can capture the signature scenery of Gungnamji in a single frame. The light in the morning is soft, making the colors especially beautiful.
• Around the romantic photo zone: The photo zones set up around the garden and pond are great for travel photos. Standing in the photo zone with the pond or garden in the background makes for a clean souvenir shot. Late afternoon is less crowded and the photos come out softer.
• Side view from the walking path: While walking along the pond, take photos from sections where the pavilion and the water surface can be seen together in a long stretch. Shooting diagonally along the pond makes the scenery look wider. On a clear afternoon, reflections are more vivid and the photos look especially good.

Night View

Buyeo Gungnamji is especially beautiful at night and is a famous nightscape spot. Lights shine on the pond and the pavilion in the center, and the reflections on the water are very impressive. It is a great place to enjoy a calm, romantic walk with the atmosphere of Baekje.

At night, the scenery is enhanced with LED lighting and hologram displays, creating an even more spectacular atmosphere during certain seasons and festival periods. In particular, when the "Gungnamji Light Festival" themed lighting is operating, it is also a popular place for photography.

The recommended time to visit is from after sunset until around 9 p.m. Visiting before it gets too late allows you to see the lights at their best and makes walking easier. The atmosphere is especially nice on summer evenings.

Admission is free and the parking area is fairly spacious, so visiting in the evening is relatively convenient. Special night events or media art programs may be operated only for a limited time, so it is recommended to check the schedule with Buyeo-gun tourism information before visiting.

• Summer: This is the highlight season of Gungnamji. Usually around July, white lotuses, red lotuses, and water lilies bloom in abundance, making the entire pond look spectacular. Early morning or around sunset is relatively cooler and more comfortable for walking.
• Autumn: Thanks to the cool weather, it is the best season for a relaxed stroll. When the surrounding trees begin to change color, you can enjoy the scenery in a calm atmosphere.
• Winter: There are relatively fewer visitors, making it a good time for a quiet visit. If you want to enjoy the night lights or the winter atmosphere, consider coming in the evening.

Gungnamji is open 24 hours a day, year-round, so in summer the most practical times are early morning or evening, in spring and autumn daytime walks are best, and in winter visiting around sunset is the most convenient.
