Gogh's Last Riverbank, Matisse's Window, Comes to the Middle of Sejong-daero

Standing in the middle of Gwanghwamun and seeing, in a single line, the riverbank Gogh painted just before he died and the evolution of Picasso's styles felt a bit unreal. This exhibition is the Detroit Institute of Arts Masterpieces Exhibition, which has brought 52 masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts in the United States to Korea for the first time. Starting with Courbet's realism and moving through the Impressionism of Renoir, Degas, and Gogh, it is arranged so you can trace about 100 years of Western art history in one flow, leading all the way to Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Kandinsky. They had carefully selected signature works from each artist, so even someone who has been to museums quite a bit would think, "This is truly on the level of hanging a textbook on the wall." The venue is Halls 1 and 2 of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Art Museum, and the exhibition runs from May 28, 2026, to August 23, 2026.

From booking to arriving in Gwanghwamun — like this if you're a foreign friend

The first thing I want to tell you about is tickets. You can buy them on-site, but unless it's a weekday morning, I strongly recommend booking online. Reservations are made through NOL Ticket (formerly Interpark Ticket), and the regular adult price is 23,000 won. Until July 22, it is an early-bird period, so if your schedule matches, you can get in a bit cheaper. Regular adult and Shinhan Card discount tickets are operated as mobile tickets, so if you have a mobile ticket, you can go straight into the exhibition without going through the box office. If you're a foreign traveler used to cards, online card payment is the most convenient, and the on-site ticket office also accepts cash and Zero Pay.

The route there is surprisingly easy. I got off at Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5, and if you come out of Exit 1 or 8, the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is right there. You can also walk from Exit 6 of Gyeongbokgung Station on Line 3 or Exit 1 of Jonggak Station on Line 1. It's better not to bring a car. The Sejongno public parking lot is so small that it fills up quickly on weekends and public holidays. About 90 minutes is a good amount of time for the visit, and since it is suitable for all ages, it's fine to come with children. After finishing, Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwamun Square, and Kyobo Bookstore are all within walking distance, so it was easy to continue the rest of the day’s schedule.

On site — lines, docents, and an English environment

Even around 10 a.m., the line for entry was already quite long. Masterpiece exhibitions tend to get busier as time goes on, so if you want to enjoy it at leisure, the practical tip is to aim for the early period of the exhibition and weekday mornings. In the hot summer, with people coming to cool off as well, you have to be prepared for weekend afternoons.

The works themselves are so famous that you can enjoy them sufficiently even if the English explanations are not perfect. Works like Gogh's 'The Banks of the Oise at Auvers', Matisse's 'The Window', and Renoir's 'Woman in a Armchair' are so familiar that just knowing the names gives you the overall flow even if you don't read every caption. But the real charm of the exhibition lies in the art-history story of "why abstract art came after Impressionism," so if you bring along a Korean docent or audio guide, satisfaction goes way up. For foreign friends, I would recommend skimming the artists' names and movements before visiting.

One thing to know in advance is that, as with most exhibitions of famous paintings, photography is usually allowed only in designated areas for artwork protection, and large backpacks or professional cameras may be restricted. If you check the official page once for the day-of photography and entry rules, as well as operating hours, you won't make a wasted trip.

Who I recommend it for

Even if you're not an art major or a museum enthusiast, this is an exhibition that will absolutely satisfy anyone who wants to see the actual brushwork and colors of paintings they've only known from textbooks right in front of them. In particular, it's perfect as a 90-minute addition to a Seoul city-center course that includes Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung, so I'd want to tell friends to add it to their itinerary when they want to avoid a rainy day or the midday heat during a trip to Korea.
