Right across from Donhwamun Gate, the main gate of Changdeokgung Palace, stands a small theater with a hanok roof. It is Seoul Donhwamun Gugak Theater. Breath...", held over two days from June 5 to 6 to mark the "Day of Gugak". From the start, it stood out because it was not just a place to listen to traditional Korean music, but a performance focused on directly experiencing the "space" that exists between sounds.

On stage was "Sound Ritual Ensemble : Cy_樂", led by Won Il (sound making, percussion, vocals) and joined by Kim Bora (vocals), Hwang Jina (geomungo), and Han Jisu (saenghwang). Monk Myeongjin, who has long led singing bowl meditation sessions, also took part. Won Il served as artistic director; through stages such as the Gyeonggi Sinawi Orchestra, he has interpreted the improvisational and collective breathing of traditional music in a contemporary way. So rather than playing a fixed score note for note, the performers responded to one another's breathing and subtle changes, shaping the flow together.

I had dinner nearby before the show, and since Ikseon-dong's hanok alleys and Insa-dong are both within walking distance, it is easy to spend time there. The performance itself is not the kind that requires understanding the lyrics to enjoy. The low resonance of the geomungo, the trembling harmonies of the saenghwang, the long lingering overtones of the singing bowls, and even the silence after the sounds fade away are all part of the "content." I felt that even if you do not know Korean, you miss almost nothing; in fact, this may be one of the Gugak performances with the lowest language barrier. That said, the hall is very quiet, so even a phone vibration or rustling sound carries clearly, and you do need to be careful.

If you go without understanding the nature of this performance, you might feel a little surprised. If you are expecting lively samulnori or a flashy stage, the mood is quite different. It is a time close to silence, space, and meditation, so it is best to go with an empty mind. The atmosphere is not suitable for bringing young children.
