From “Dokdo (纛島)” to Ttukseom: The Hangang Floodplain Once Home to a Horse Ranch and Military Training Ground

Ttukseom is not actually an island but a low, flat floodplain where the Hangang and Jungnangcheon streams meet. According to the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, during the Joseon period this area was a horse ranch for raising government horses and a military training ground, as well as terrain that suffered damage during floods.

The name is said to have originated during the reign of King Taejo of Joseon, when a large military flag (纛旗) drifted here along the river, after which a shrine was established and spring and autumn rites were held. It was therefore known by various names, including Deokseom, Deokdo, and Salkkotibeol, while its Chinese-character name was Dokdo (纛島). Today’s park is an example of how this broad riverside plain was transformed into a space where civic recreation, water activities, and cultural facilities coexist.

One-Minute Walk from Exits 2 and 3 of Jayang (Ttukseom Hangang Park) Station to the Park

For first-time visitors, using Exit 2 or 3 of Jayang (Ttukseom Hangang Park) Station on Line 7 provides a direct connection to the park, and the official guidance states that it is about a one-minute walk. From Konkuk Univ. Station on Line 2, the distance is approximately 1,000 m from Exit 5, so visitors carrying luggage or traveling with a stroller or bicycle may find Line 7 more convenient because it involves a shorter route.

Buses serving the area include routes 2221, 2222, and 2415 and Gwangjin 05 at the Sinja Elementary School stop; route 2222 at the Jayang General Market stop; and route 2014 at the Jayang 4-dong Garage stop. The Hangang Bus connects directly to the park from the Ttukseom Pier.

Free Park Access and an 18.6 km Bicycle Path: Decide How Far to Walk First

Admission to Ttukseom Hangang Park itself is free, and it is open year-round. The park has three convenience stores, two children’s playgrounds, 18 restrooms, drinking fountains, and benches, while the combined length of its bicycle and vehicle roads is 18.6 km. Rather than walking along the riverside for an extended distance, first-time travelers are less likely to lose their bearings if they focus on the Waterside Stage, J-Bug, and swimming pool areas near the station.

The bicycle rental shop is located in the plaza beside Exits 2 and 3 of Jayang Station, and its hours vary by season. If you plan to cycle, it is safest to check whether the rental shop is operating before setting out. A quick tour of the entire park takes about 1–2 hours, while combining it with Hangang Play Place and a riverside walk realistically takes about 2–3 hours.

Hangang Play Place, Opened in December 2025: Free on Floors 1 and 3, Kids’ Café on Floor 2

Ttukseom J-Bug, connected to the passageway from Exit 3 of Jayang Station, reopened as “Hangang Play Place” on December 19, 2025. Hangang Play Place occupies 2,476.69 m² on Floors 1 and 3 and operates from 10:00 to 19:00 Tuesday through Friday and from 10:00 to 20:00 on weekends and public holidays.

Hangang Play Place is closed every Monday, January 1, and the day of Lunar New Year and Chuseok, and admission is free. Its facilities include a Hangang panorama media wall, a Hangang walking experience, gondola and Hangang Bus experiences, a Cheongdam Bridge observation lounge, and an otter playground, making it an alternative on days when a riverside walk is difficult because of extreme heat, rain, or severe cold. The Seoul-style kids’ café on Floor 2 is a separate facility, costing 5,000 won for individuals and 2,000 won for groups.

Ttukseom Swimming Pool Capacity: 3,500 People; Open Only for Summer from June 19 to August 30, 2026

Ttukseom Swimming Pool is located upstream toward Exit 2 of Jayang Station and has a capacity of 3,500 people. In 2026, the Hangang Park swimming pools will operate for 73 days, from Friday, June 19, through Sunday, August 30, without any closing days.

Operating hours are 09:00–18:00, with evening operations until 22:00 beginning July 3. Admission costs 3,000 won for children aged 6–12, 4,000 won for teenagers aged 13–18, and 5,000 won for adults aged 19 and over; children under 6 enter free. Ttukseom Swimming Pool has a lazy river, a 4 m-high Aqua Ring, and a sunbathing area, but as seasonal facilities, these cannot be used outside the summer opening period.

Four Parking Lots with 674 Spaces and a Maximum Fee of 10,000 Won: Jayang Station Is More Predictable on Weekends

Visitors arriving by car can use four parking lots with a total of 674 spaces, operating from 06:00 to 24:00. Ttukseom Parking Lot 1 has 64 spaces at 409 Jayang-dong; Lot 2 has 356 spaces at 427-1 Jayang-dong in front of the information center; Lot 3 has 123 spaces at 97-5 Jayang-dong in front of the swimming pool; and Lot 4 has 131 spaces at 97-5 Jayang-dong beneath Cheongdam Bridge.

For a passenger car, parking costs 1,000 won for the first 30 minutes, then 200 won per additional 10 minutes, with a daily maximum of 10,000 won. The lots are open free of charge on the day before, the day of, and the day after Lunar New Year and Chuseok. Vehicles for people with disabilities and vehicles of national merit recipients receive an 80% discount, while compact cars, motorcycles, low-emission vehicles, and multi-child Happy Cards receive a 50% discount; discounts cannot be combined.

Official guidance recommends public transportation because traffic congestion is expected from event crowds on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Parking outside designated areas may incur a 50,000-won fine, and visitors are advised to avoid overnight parking because flooding is possible during typhoons, floods, and torrential rain. Shade-Tent Areas and the Waterside Stage Allowed from March to November: Choose a Spot Before Spreading Your Mat

If you plan to use a shade tent in the park, note that a designated shade-tent area is located around the Ttukseom Waterside Stage. According to the official facilities information, use of this area is free and available on-site, and the permitted period is from March through November.

In a riverside park, some areas that look like the same lawn may not permit installations, so it is better to check the map and on-site signs first. Seasonal events and performances may take place around the Waterside Stage. If your goal is a quiet walk, check whether your visit coincides with an event and adjust the distance you travel upstream or downstream from Jayang Station.

A 2.5-Hour Route for First-Time Foreign Visitors: Jayang Station → Hangang Play Place → Riverside → Swimming Pool

On a day without rain, a simple basic route is to visit Hangang Play Place first from Exit 3 of Jayang Station, then emerge onto the riverside through the J-Bug passageway and walk toward the Waterside Stage. If you include the indoor experiences, allow 40–60 minutes for Hangang Play Place, 40 minutes for the riverside walk, and another 20–30 minutes for a convenience-store break and taking photos, making approximately 2.5 hours appropriate.

In summer, first check the swimming pool’s location toward Exit 2 of Jayang Station and plan your schedule with ticket-purchase and waiting times in mind.
