Why Hangang Renaissance Chose 1,140 m of Banpo Bridge in 2007

Moonlight Rainbow Fountain is a core project of Hangang Renaissance. It began in June 2007 and opened in April 2009. To use the roughly 700 m-wide Seoul Han River as a single stage, it was installed over a 1,140 m section, 570 m upstream and 570 m downstream of Banpo Bridge, and it is a bridge fountain that draws river water up with underwater pumps and drops it about 20 m below the water surface.

Banpo Bridge itself is a two-level bridge over the Han River connecting Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, and Seobinggo-dong, Yongsan-gu, and its lower level is Jamsu Bridge. On November 7, 2008, the fountain was registered with Guinness as the “world’s longest bridge fountain,” and its water jets and music are synchronized with 380 swing nozzles, 38 main pumps of 63 kW each, and three-sided sound equipment for the musical fountain.

How to Read the 5 Performances of 20 Minutes Each on Sunday, August 2026, from 19:30 to 21:30

August 2026 is peak season. On Sundays, Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays, the fountain runs five times for 20 minutes each, starting at 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, and 21:30. Therefore, if you arrive for the 20:00 or 20:30 show rather than the first one, it is easier to come after dinner, and the last 21:30 show ends at 21:50.

From Monday to Thursday in peak season, there are three shows at 20:00, 20:30, and 21:00. In the off-season, from March 15 to June and in September to October, there are three weekday shows and four shows on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. The resting periods are January to March 14 and November to December, and there is no admission fee or reservation required.

Where to Sit: the 43,300 m² Moonlight Square or the 7,143 m² Riverside Stage

The benchmark for a head-on view is Moonlight Square below the south end of Banpo Bridge. The crescent-shaped Moonlight Square measures 43,300 m², and from the River Stand installed toward the Han River you can see both the full width of the bridge and the skyline toward northern Seoul. Since the fountain stretches 1,140 m, it is easier to fit both ends of the water jets into one frame from the center of the square than from directly under the bridge.

The riverside stage next to Moonlight Square is a naturally floodable outdoor stage modeled after the waves of the Han River, with an area of about 7,143 m². On days without performances, the tiered space serves as a seating area. However, the widest view of the fountain is from the riverbank at the south end, and from Jamsu Bridge you get a close view of the water jets but it is harder to take in the entire lighting pattern at a glance.

15 Minutes from Exit 8-1 of Express Bus Terminal Station, 15 Minutes from Exit 1 of Shinbanpo Station

For first-time visitors, Exit 8-1 or 8-2 of Express Bus Terminal Station on Lines 3, 7, and 9 is the simplest choice. Exit via the G1 exit of Goto Mall and walk toward Banpo Bridge for about 15 minutes; after entering the park, walk down toward the bridge and riverbank to reach Moonlight Square. For map apps, search for “Banpo Moonlight Rainbow Fountain” or “Banpo Hangang Park Moonlight Square” to make the destination clear.

From Shinbanpo Station on Line 9, Exit 1 and use the Banpo interchange for about 15 minutes. Buses 740 and 405 stop at the “Banpo Hangang Park, Sebitseom” stop, and buses 143, 401, and 406 stop at the “Banpo Bridge South End Hangang Citizens’ Park Entrance” stop. If you are coming straight from the airport, Airport Bus 6020, which stops at the Shinbanpo Station and Sehwa Girls’ Middle and High School stop, is also an option.

Calculating 669 Spaces in Banpo 1, 2, and 3 Parking Lots and 1,000 Won for the First 30 Minutes

For vehicles, it is best to use the three Banpo Hangang Park parking lots as the Standard. Banpo Parking Lot 1 has 332 spaces at 122-1 Jamwon-dong, upstream of the south end of Banpo Bridge; Banpo Parking Lot 2 has 253 spaces at 115-5 Banpo-dong, downstream of the south end; and Banpo Parking Lot 3 has 84 spaces at the same address, 115-5 Banpo-dong. Together, the three parking lots have 669 spaces and operate from 06:00 to 24:00.

Parking fees are 1,000 won for the first 30 minutes, then 200 won per 10 minutes, with a daily maximum of 10,000 won. For example, 2 hours of parking for seeing only one fountain show costs 2,800 won, and 3 hours costs 4,000 won. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, access roads may be congested due to park events, so if you want to see the first 19:30 show, walking in from Express Bus Terminal Station or Shinbanpo Station is the shorter route.

From the Three Artificial Sebitseom Islands to Seoraeseom, 90-Minute Route Before and After the Fountain

If you only plan to see the fountain, 60 to 90 minutes around Moonlight Square is enough. Arrive around 19:00, secure a spot along the riverbank, watch the 19:30 show, then walk downstream to Sebitseom to see the lights and Banpo Bridge from another angle. Sebitseom consists of three floating artificial islands, Chaebitseom, Gavitseom, and Solbitseom, plus the outdoor stage Yebitseom, and it is located downstream of the south end of Banpo Bridge.

If you are walking as part of a daytime itinerary, you can combine part of the 7.2 km promenade and bicycle path of Banpo Hangang Park with Seoraeseom. Seoraeseom lies between Banpo Bridge and Dongjak Bridge, is an artificial island created during the comprehensive Hangang development project in the 1980s, and is connected to Banpo Hangang Park by three Seorae Bridges. The park as a whole is Informationed as 563,015 m², with 7 restrooms and 2 convenience kiosks.

Wheelchairs and strollers can move to the riverbank viewing area because there are no level changes on the Moonlight Square access path. Accessible parking spaces are located beside Moonlight Square and at the basketball-court parking lot, and an accessible restroom with a ramp is in the public restroom next to Mini Stop.
