How a late-Joseon trading site became Seobu-dong Market

Andong Old Market is introduced as Andong’s oldest traditional market, formed in the late Joseon period. It was reportedly a place where grain, seafood, and firewood from nearby areas were traded in the city center. This history helps explain why food ingredients and everyday goods remain central to the market today.

After liberation in 1945 and the Korean War after 1950, the number of established merchants increased as the population grew and the urban area developed. Following the construction of Andong Department Store in the mid-1960s, specialized markets formed in each alley. Why Seomun Fried Chicken Alley became Andong Jjimdak Alley

In the direction of the west gate of Andong Old Market, stores selling fried chicken opened in the 1970s, forming Fried Chicken Alley. As the alley declined with changing times, merchants chose Andong jjimdak as a way forward, and it developed into today’s Jjimdak Alley.

Andong jjimdak is introduced as a dish with a documented history of more than 600 years. Today’s version contains potatoes, vegetables, and glass noodles, and about 40 jjimdak specialty restaurants are gathered in Jjimdak Alley.

An open kitchen where cooking begins immediately after ordering
