A Busan hike along Geumjeongsanseong Fortress’s four gates and 18,845 m of walls
Geumjeongsanseong Fortress was built after the Imjin War as a mountain fortress for refuge and resistance, extending 18,845 m along the ridge of Geumjeongsan Mountain in Busan. A practical approach is to climb to the North Gate and Godangbong Peak from Beomeosa Station, or take Bus 203 to the East Gate and explore the four gates and watchtowers in sections.

Why the 18,845 m fortress walls encircle the Geumjeongsan ridgeline
Geumjeongsanseong Fortress was built by the residents of Dongnae-bu, who suffered damage during the Imjin War, to serve both as a refuge and a place of resistance against future invasions. The surviving fortress was constructed in 1703, the 29th year of King Sukjong’s reign, by Dongnae magistrate Park Tae-hang and Yi Yaga following a proposal by Jo Tae-dong, the governor of Gyeongsang Province.
In 1707, the 33rd year of King Sukjong’s reign, Dongnae magistrate Han Bae-ha newly built the inner fortress. In 1808, the 8th year of King Sunjo’s reign, Dongnae magistrate Oh Han-won repaired sections that had collapsed or disappeared. The fortress walls continue along the mountain ridges across Geumjeong-gu, Buk-gu, Dongnae-gu, and Yangsan in Gyeongsangnam-do.
The scale that made it a historic site in 1971 and the facilities remaining today
Geumjeongsanseong Fortress was designated a historic site on February 9, 1971. It is described as measuring 18,845 m in length, with walls 1.5–3 m high and a total area of 818,177 ㎡, making it the largest mountain fortress in Korea.
The site has four fortress gates and four watchtowers. The East and South Gates were restored in 1972, the West Gate in 1973, and the North Gate in 1986. Watchtowers 1 through 4 were restored between 1976 and 1979.
What can you see if you start at the East Gate at 415 m above sea level?
The East Gate stands at a mountain pass 415 m above sea level on Geumjeongsan’s main ridge and is introduced as the most accessible of the four gateways. It is an arched gate with a single-story gate pavilion featuring a hipped-and-gabled roof, three bays across the front and two bays along the side. The gate opening is 300 cm wide and the arch is 340 cm high.
The trail from the East Gate to Watchtowers 3 and 4 is a course recommended by local guides. Watchtower 3 stands on a rocky cliff about 1 km from the East Gate, while Watchtower 4 is on a ridge 1.5 km south of the North Gate at an elevation of 620 m. There are also sections of the fortress from which you can look out over the Nakdonggang Estuary and the Dongnae area.
How not to miss the water gate in the West Gate valley and the South Gate
The West Gate is the only one of the four fortress gates located in a valley. Defensive platforms measuring 4 m wide, 5 m long, and 5 m high have been restored on both sides. The water gate that allows valley water to pass through is also described as the fortress’s only facility of its kind.
The South Gate is a level-lintel gate with a 290 cm-wide opening, a height of 280 cm, and a supporting wall width of 480 cm. It lies midway along Section 7-1 of Busan Galmaet-gil, and its address is given as San 69-8, Geumseong-dong, Geumjeong-gu. Therefore, unlike an itinerary that only visits the East Gate before returning, the South Gate should be planned as part of a ridge hike.
From Exit 5 or 7 of Beomeosa Station to the North Gate and Godangbong Peak
When arriving from outside Busan by public transportation, start at Exit 5 or 7 of Beomeosa Station on Busan Metro Line 1. The recommended route is to take Bus 90 from the station and get off at the Beomeosa ticket office.
A representative course beginning at the Beomeosa ticket office passes the North Gate and Geumsaem before continuing to Godangbong Peak, the summit of Geumjeongsan. The trail combines gently sloping dirt paths, wooden decks, stairs, and rocky ascents, so it is not suitable for flat-ground sightseeing. Visitors have also reported that a queue may form for commemorative photos at the summit marker on Godangbong Peak.
How to combine Bus 203 with Section 7-1 of Galmaet-gil
Bus 203 can be used to reach the East Gate area. Section 7-1 of Busan Galmaet-gil runs from Children's Grand Park to the East Gate of Geumjeongsanseong Fortress, whose address is listed as San 41-13, Geumseong-dong, Geumjeong-gu.
This section is 9.0 km long, has an official duration of 3 hours, and is rated moderate in difficulty. Since the starting and ending points differ and the route includes mountain trails, it is easier to plan your trip by taking Bus 203 to the East Gate and walking part of the ridge, or by dividing the visit into a North Gate–Godangbong Peak route starting from Beomeosa, rather than trying to see all four gates in one day.
Open year-round and free, but requiring hiking preparation
According to Busan tourism information, Geumjeongsanseong Fortress is open at all times, has no annual closing days, and is free of charge. It is not a tourist attraction accessed through a separate paid ticket office, but a place where visitors walk along sections of the fortress. Therefore, the listed address, 1F, 531 Sanseong-ro, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, should not be regarded as the sole entrance to the entire fortress wall.
No separate recommended viewing time is provided for part of the fortress, while the entire Galmaet-gil Section 7-1 takes about 3 hours over 9.0 km. Because the route includes dirt paths, wooden decks, stairs, and rocky ascents, wheelchair and stroller access may be limited. No information is provided about parking locations and fees, a main telephone number, photography restrictions, cash-only payment, English guidance, or audio guides.

Geumjeongsanseong Village is located around Geumjeongsanseong Fortress, and Busan’s Galmaet-gil guide introduces the makgeolli and goat meat produced here as local specialties. You can combine a fortress-wall visit with a meal in one outing, but this guide does not include the opening hours or reservation policies of restaurants to visit after the hike.
The fortress, made of granite, is described as having a solid appearance. The village’s makgeolli and black goat bulgogi show that the fortress is not merely a historical site but also a place connected to the food culture of the Geumjeongsan living area.
