3 Days When the City of Shipbuilding Turns into a Summer-Night Beach
Dong-gu, Ulsan is a city that builds ships, home to the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard. Every year in late July, the city holds a festival by the sea. The 2026 Ulsan Shipbuilding & Marine Festival will run for three days from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26, around Ilsan Beach in Dong-gu. It opens with a special-stage opening performance on the first evening, and during the day there are hands-on experiences on the sandy beach, while at night the program continues with the stage show and running and EDM. What I like most is that this festival turns the identity of the "city of shipbuilding" into something playful. A competition where people make boats from scrap and launch them onto the sea is the main event, and you won’t see that at other beach festivals.
The scale is not small either. In 2024, more than 185,000 people attended over the three days, and in 2025, even with rain falling across the country, about 130,000 people came. Even so, it is not as packed as Haeundae Beach in Busan, so one of the charms here is that you can stroll at an easy pace while enjoying the color of the sea.

The main attractions are the ingenious boat contest and the "Night Run" along the night sea
The signature program that truly matches the festival’s name is the Ingenious Boat Contest. In 2024, a total of 74 teams competed across the general, family, foreigner, and college-student divisions. Starting in the morning, participants build boats from recyclable materials at booths on the sandy beach, and from 4 p.m. they launch their handmade boats into the sea and race them. I found it especially interesting that there is a separate foreigner division; in one year, Afghan teenagers who had settled in Dong-gu even took part. It is fun just to watch, but if your travel schedule lines up, applying as a team would be a special experience.
At night, the atmosphere changes completely. The heat is cooled off with the "Ilsan Beach Water Bomb" starting around 6 p.m., followed by the "Night Run Ilsan." In 2024, about 1,470 people wore glow-in-the-dark headbands and wristbands and ran along the night sea, crossing the suspension bridge at Daewangam Park. Once the run ends, it flows straight into the Ilsan EDM Festival, turning the sandy beach into an open-air club. Even if you do not join the run, simply standing on the beach and enjoying the lights and music is enough.
A traveler's day: arriving by bus and spending the whole day from noon to night
If you plan your route in advance, it becomes much easier. Ilsan Beach is accessible by bus from downtown Ulsan, and many city buses, including routes 101, 102, 104, 108, 111, 124, 127, 133, and 401, stop at the "Ilsan Beach (24-233)" bus stop, which is a 6-minute walk from the beach. It takes about an hour from Ulsan Express Bus Terminal and around 20 minutes by car from Taehwagang Station. If you are driving, parking for 976 cars, including the entrance public parking lot, is free, but during the three days of the festival, spaces fill up quickly from daytime, so public transportation is recommended.
Once you arrive, it is best to spend the day moving through the beach experience zone. Programs such as marine sports experiences, flyboard shows, and drone soccer experiences are offered, and tours that suit a city of shipbuilding, such as the Dong-gu sightseeing tour, boat tour, and Hyundai Heavy Industries tour, have also been operated. If you get hungry, there are many shell-bbq restaurants lined up in the "Ilsanji Shell Alley" right in front of the beach, where you can enjoy a filling meal. Facilities such as restrooms, showers, changing rooms, water stations, and convenience stores are well established as part of the permanent beach infrastructure, and there is even a nursing room in the information center building.

As the sun goes down, the lights and busking at "Makguzigi Starlight Plaza" come on, leading into performances on the special stage, Water Bomb, and EDM. Since this is a festival where the night programs are the main attraction, make sure to plan your return route in advance. The performances run late, so the most comfortable option is to book accommodation within Dong-gu, such as around Ilsanji’s lively district or near Daewangam Park, and walk back. If you plan to take a city bus back to downtown, I recommend checking the last bus time before the final stage ends.
Things worth knowing before you go
The most reassuring thing is that entry to Ilsan Beach is free. There is no ticket required just to view the festival, so you can stop by without any 부담. However, programs like the Night Run and the Ingenious Boat Contest are participation-based and have capacity limits and advance registration, so if you want to run or build a boat yourself, be sure to check the application method and schedule on the official page in advance.
- Weather: Late July is the monsoon and shower season. Since it also rained in 2025, bring a raincoat or foldable umbrella, and because the daytime sand is under strong sunlight, a hat and sunscreen are essential.
- Clothing: You may get splashed at Water Bomb, so having an extra set of clothes or a waterproof pouch is helpful. Since you will walk on the sand for a long time, comfortable shoes are a good idea.
- Payment/Cash: Some restaurants and street stalls in Shell Alley may only accept cash, so it is convenient to carry a small amount of cash.
- Language: Information on dedicated interpretation services is limited, but the festival is open to foreign visitors, as shown by the foreigner division in the Ingenious Boat Contest, and because it is centered on stage shows and hands-on activities, it is not difficult to enjoy by following along.
If you feel it would be a waste to visit only the festival, take a walk through Daewangam Park, which continues right from the southern end of the beach. With the suspension bridge, pine forest, and rocky cliff trails, it is perfect for a daytime outing.
Recommended for these travelers
It is a great fit for families with children, friends who enjoy running or EDM, and travelers who want to experience Ulsan’s identity as the "city of shipbuilding" in a playful way. Spend a day on the summer sea of the East Coast without the crowds of Busan: try activities by day, lose yourself in music at night, and walk back to your accommodation under the lights of Starlight Plaza. If you are passing through Ulsan in late July, this is a three-day window worth planning around.
