Muju, where tens of thousands of fireflies light up the night — this was my first festival like this

Standing in a dark habitat with no lights on, I suddenly saw tiny green dots begin to blink one by one in the grass before me. Fireflies are a natural monument, so in the Muju area you can only see them in June and September, and the place that turned this glow into a festival is the Muju Firefly Festival. It first opened in 1997 and has continued every year since, making it one of Korea's signature environmental festivals, centered on fireflies and pristine nature. In 2026, it will run for nine days from September 4 to 12 across Muju County. The stage is set around Wisteria Sports Park, Jinam Park, and the Namdaecheon area in Muju-eup, a mountain town in Jeonbuk. By day there are ecological experiences and performances, and by night the atmosphere changes completely with fireflies, nadeut-nori, and fireworks shows.

Muju Firefly Festival Firefly Mystery Exploration Field

The heart of the festival — the Firefly Mystery Exploration must be reserved in advance

If you remember just one thing, make it this. The Firefly Mystery Exploration is 100% online reservation only, so you cannot simply show up on site and enter. It is a program where groups travel by dedicated bus to the habitat and observe fireflies with a professional interpreter, but competition for reservations is intense every year and it often sells out one to two weeks before the festival begins. I booked mine early on the official website (firefly.or.kr), and weekend sessions go especially fast, so I recommend reserving as soon as your date is fixed. The participation fee is 20,000 won per person, but half of that, 10,000 won, is returned as a Muju Love gift certificate, which can be used like cash at local stores. There are rules to follow during observation: fireflies are sensitive to light, so do not turn on flashlights or smartphone flashes, and loud noises or sudden movements are also prohibited. The key is to stay quietly and follow the interpreter's guidance.

One thing that can be confusing: 'Firefly Mystery Exploration' and 'Ecological Exploration with Fireflies' are different programs. Ecological Exploration is a one-night, two-day package staying at Nabom Resort, and it has a separate registration site (mujutour.com). It focuses on hands-on activities for children, so it is a good fit for families. For safety, Crocs, sandals, and slippers are not allowed; sneakers are required, so make sure to pack proper shoes.

A foreign traveler's day — from arrival to the night shuttle

Muju has no train station, so if you are using public transportation, the easiest route is to go from Seoul Station to Daejeon Complex Terminal and then transfer to an express bus. If you are driving, you park in a temporary lot and take a shuttle bus into the venue. The shuttles run about every 20 minutes and board and drop off at Parking Lots 1 and 2 and the intercity bus terminal. However, operations vary by date, so be careful. In 2025, for example, the shuttle and temporary parking were not operating on several days during the festival period. When you're heading back after the night programs, the last bus time is the most important thing. Last year, the final shuttle left the terminal at 10:30 p.m. Since the Mystery Exploration starts around 8 p.m., time can be tight after it ends, so it is more comfortable to decide your return plan in advance.

By day, the experience booths and food market are concentrated around Jinam Park, and the main stage at Wisteria Sports Park hosts everything from the opening performance to song contests and EDM parties. At night, Namdaecheon becomes the highlight, with the 'Muju Anseong Nadeut-nori,' designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Jeonbuk State, taking place. Bundles of hanji paper filled with charcoal powder are hung in the air and lit, and sparks fall like rain onto the river. Add the musical fountain and laser show, and the night scenery becomes spectacular.

Things that are helpful to know in advance — weather, clothing, payment

September nights in Muju can be colder than expected because it is a mountain area. The firefly exploration takes place outdoors in the grass, so long sleeves, long pants, and comfortable sneakers are the right choice, and it helps to bring mosquito repellent. Also, the exploration may be canceled if fireflies do not appear or if it rains, and depending on the weather, there may be fewer fireflies. Since this is a festival where nature is the star, that part is simply an unavoidable variable.

  • Reservation: Mystery Exploration requires online advance booking; weekend sessions often sell out early
  • Fee: Mystery Exploration costs 20,000 won per person (half refunded as a Muju Love gift certificate)
  • Clothing: Long sleeves, long pants, sneakers, mosquito repellent
  • Observation etiquette: No flash, loud noises, or sudden movements
  • Return trip: Check the last night shuttle time in advance (beware of days with no service)

Verified information on English guidance is limited. However, the official website does have English, Chinese, and Japanese pages, so you can get basic information before booking, and the Mystery Exploration itself is an experience of 'seeing light,' so even if language is limited, the impression still comes through clearly. Accommodations include Muju Resort, Nabom Resort, pensions, and guesthouses, but they fill up quickly during the festival, so it is best to book early.

So who is this for?

It is perfect for families who want to see real natural light, not artificial lighting, with their children, and for travelers who want to experience the atmosphere of rural Korea and traditional nadeut-nori all at once. A day trip is possible, but if you stay one night, you can also enjoy the clean air at the foot of Deogyusan, so I recommend staying overnight. The green glow that sparkled in the pitch-black grass at night is something that can never be fully captured in photos.
