2026 Seoul Taekwondo Performance

The Saturday when kicks soared into the sky in the hanok courtyard

At Cheonugak by Cheonghakji Pond, as the demo team in dobok performed on the stage under the tiled roof and spun two full turns in the air to break wooden boards, the applause from the crowd filling the courtyard burst out all at once. What I saw was the '2026 Seoul City Taekwondo Performance.' This year, the performance runs from May 9 to October 18, every Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., twice a day, on the Cheonugak stage at Namsangol Hanok Village. Admission is free. However, the regular performances are paused during July and August, when the midsummer heat is intense, so if you are traveling in the middle of winter or summer, it is a good idea to check the schedule once more. One of the charms of this performance is that you can see both disciplined traditional demonstrations and creative stages that mix music and choreography, all against the backdrop of a traditional hanok. This season, 10 teams, including the Kukkiwon, the Defense Combat Taekwondo Research Institute, Taekwondo Choreo, and the Kyungmin University demo team, take turns on stage.

How one foreign friend spends a Saturday afternoon

The preparations are surprisingly simple. You do not need to make a reservation or buy a ticket. Since it is a free outdoor performance, you just need to go at the right time and stand or sit in the courtyard. That said, the 2:00 p.m. show, which is the most popular slot, fills up quickly in the front rows, so if you want to watch the breaking scenes up close from a good seat, I recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes early. Since it is an open courtyard, you will be directly under the sun, so it is a good idea to bring a hat or parasol and a bottle of water, and sneakers are comfortable because the courtyard has dirt-and-stone ground.

Getting there is not difficult. If you come out of Exit 4 of Chungmuro Station on Subway Lines 3 and 4, you can reach the hanok village entrance in just a few minutes on foot. It is close to Myeongdong, Chungmuro, and Namsan, so it fits perfectly into a half-day itinerary. In the morning, enjoy food in Myeongdong; in the afternoon, watch the performance in the hanok village; and in the evening, head up to Namsan. Even the 4:00 p.m. show ends in the afternoon or early evening, so there is almost no need to worry about missing the last train home. However, there are no large restaurant clusters inside the hanok village, so it is better to eat in the Chungmuro or Myeongdong area before coming in.

There is almost no need to worry that you will not understand what is happening on site. Taekwondo demonstrations are performances that show through movement, shouts, and the sound of breaking boards, so even if you do not know Korean, the flow is easy to follow. During the breaks between performances, there is an experience zone where you can measure your 'taekwondo punch' and kicks using digital equipment, and anyone can participate freely on site without prior registration. Since numbers appear on the screen, children line up for it like a game.

If you want to try breaking boards while wearing a dobok, go on Sunday

For those who feel that just watching is not enough, there is something I want to tell you. Starting in June, a special experience program for foreign tourists is offered separately. It is a time to properly put on a taekwondo dobok and learn basic movements and board-breaking directly, and it runs for about 30 minutes after the regular Sunday performance every week. If you complete the program, you receive a certificate and a commemorative belt made in this year's Seoul color, 'Morning Yellow.' A photo of yourself in a dobok breaking a board becomes a keepsake you will treasure for years. So if your goal is to 'try it yourself,' it is better to aim for Sunday afternoon rather than Saturday.

The hanok village is not the end — DDP street performance

The taekwondo stage is not only inside the hanok village. Street performances are also held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in the Oullim Plaza. The street performances run a total of 12 times, twice a day, from April to June and from September to October, excluding the midsummer period (July to August), and the Bigaebi and Mirme teams present fast and spectacular performances. Because each session is scheduled, you need to go on the exact date, and the full schedule and performers can be checked accurately on the official Instagram account (@seoul.tkd). Watching taekwondo with the smooth curves of the DDP building in the background has a very different atmosphere from what you see in the hanok courtyard. It is also great to combine with Dongdaemun shopping or a night view itinerary.

Recommended for these travelers

I confidently recommend this for first-time visitors to Korea who want to see the most 'typically Korean' scene in a short but powerful way, families looking for physical activities to enjoy with children, and travelers who want to spend a fulfilling afternoon for free. There is no reservation and no admission fee, so it is easy to fit into your schedule, and the biggest appeal is being able to enjoy the same taekwondo in two very different settings: a traditional hanok and a downtown landmark. If you see the moment when kicks soar over the tiled roof on a Saturday afternoon, you will immediately understand why people applaud.
