Have the language of "my skin" translated underground at DDP

Honestly, when I hear "cosmetics store," I do not expect much. But B the B on Basement Level 2 of Dongdaemun DDP was a little different. Even the name stands for "Beyond the Beauty," meaning it aims to look beyond beauty. The special exhibition running in the Uptown zone here from June 13, 2026 to September 27, 2026 is <BEAUTY, TRANSLATED>. The concept is to show that beauty is not one fixed answer, but a different "language of beauty" for each brand: moisture and soothing for some, color and expression for others, and technology, diagnosis, and rituals of recovery for still others. It sounds abstract when you only hear about it, but once you go in, it is surprisingly practical: you get your skin and scalp analyzed by machine and can immediately try products matched to the results.

The space is broadly divided into Uptown and Downtown. The place I spent the most time in was Uptown, a permanent exhibition zone of about 260 pyeong where beauty-tech programs such as AI skin and scalp diagnosis, personal color analysis, and makeup experiences are offered. After the diagnosis, recommended products appear, you can test them, and if you like them, you can even buy them online right away. The flow is very smooth.

It is in the middle of the city, but once you open the door and step inside, a faint forest-like scent rushes toward you. Outside is the usual bustle of Dongdaemun, but inside the lighting is low and the atmosphere is calm, so it was a nice place to rest tired feet for a moment while sightseeing.

A foreign traveler's half-day — how I went

First, the good news. Admission is free. You can just go without a reservation, which made planning the day easy. However, popular experiences such as AI skin and scalp diagnosis or makeup can have a wait when it gets crowded, so I went in the early afternoon around opening time. If you have heavy makeup on, the skin diagnosis may not be accurate, so if you want to get properly diagnosed here, I recommend going with light makeup.

Getting there is not difficult. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station on Subway Lines 2, 4, and 5 is right in front, and Exit 1 brings DDP into view. B the B is on Basement Level 2 of DDP Market, so if you use the entrance toward Eoullim Square that connects underground, you can go straight inside without getting lost on the surface. I got briefly lost inside the huge silver curved building, but if you follow the signs for "DDP Market / B the B," you will find it.

Inside, the order went like this. First, I had my skin and scalp scanned with a beauty-tech device, and I also had my personal color analyzed. When recommended products appeared based on the results, I tried them on at the makeup bar, and with AR virtual makeup I could apply different shades to my face without wiping off my existing makeup. Trying different lip colors was oddly addictive. You do not need to worry much about language. Since this is a K-beauty experience course aimed at foreign tourists, the device screens and guidance are intuitive, so it was easy to follow along by instinct. Payment is a one-stop system where you buy the product you like online, so there is no need to carry much cash.

After the experience, if you move into the Downtown area, you will find pop-ups, collaboration exhibitions, and photo zones that are great for pictures. There is a studio where you can take Life Four Cuts, and I left with one shot featuring my face slightly adjusted according to my diagnosis results. Even after you finish the visit, DDP itself is a beautiful building when the lights come on at night, so if you leave around evening and also take exterior photos, it makes for a perfect end to the day. Closing time is 8 p.m., so it is not so late that you need to worry about the last train like you would for a night event, and the station is right in front, so getting home is very easy.

What you should know to avoid a wasted trip

The most important thing is the operating days. B the B is closed every Monday and is listed as open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 20:00. However, the operating format can change a little depending on the season and the special exhibition, so if you are planning a Monday visit or want to do a specific program for sure, I recommend checking the official channel once before you go to confirm whether it is operating that day.

DDP is so large that if you feel it would be a waste to leave after only seeing B the B, I recommend combining it with the free exhibitions or the design store in the same building and making it a two- to three-hour course. Everything is connected underground, so the weather hardly matters.

If you are interested in K-beauty but find it burdensome to shop around at different stores, or if you want to check with data what suits your skin, there is hardly a better place. It is free and right in front of the station, so it is easy to fit into your schedule. It turns cosmetic shopping into an "experience," and I ended up staying much longer than expected.
