A beach festival in Songdo without the sea?

Incheon Songdo is a new city built on reclaimed tidal flats, so in fact it does not have a real sandy beach. Even so, every summer it sets up an artificial white sand beach and a giant pool in the middle of downtown and holds a beach festival. At first I thought, 'A beach festival without the sea?' but once I went, the scene of shooting water guns and riding water slides against a backdrop of glass skyscrapers felt even more unusual. The 2026 7th Songdo Beach Festival will be held from August 8 to 15 at Songdo Moonlight Park. It is Yeonsu-gu's signature summer festival, which revives the memories of the old Songdo Amusement Park in a modern way, and the main attractions are theme-based water play areas such as a large pool, water slide, climbing pool, and polar bear pool, plus an artificial white-sand playground where both kids and adults can roll around. Best of all, admission is free.

A water playground reached on foot from the subway terminus — a one-day route

Before you go, just bring three things: a swimsuit (wear it underneath), a spare set of clothes and a towel, and a waterproof pouch. The sun is really intense during the day, so sunscreen, a hat, and aqua shoes are also helpful. Since getting wet is part of the experience, if you do not have clothes to change into, the trip home becomes a hassle.

Getting there is surprisingly simple. The terminus of Incheon Subway Line 1, 'Songdo Moonlight Festival Park Station,' has the same name as the festival site, so there is no chance of confusion. However, you still have to walk a little from the station to Moonlight Park where the actual water playground is located, and getting off at nearby 'International Business District Station' is also fine because it is only a 7-minute walk away, so you can use either station. If you are coming from Seoul, transfer to Line 1 from City Hall or Bupyeong; since it is the end of the line, there is no need to worry about getting lost. If you plan to enjoy the night events as well, be sure to check the last train time in advance. Incheon Line 1 bends in a V-shape, so travel time can become longer depending on your destination.

Once you arrive, the atmosphere during the day and at night is completely different. In the daytime, children in colorful swimsuits line up in front of the water slide, and the mood is like a 'Waterbomb' event with water being sprayed from water guns and water cannons. Kids play in the artificial white sand, and while drenched they have fun at the beach stationery shop doing paper lotteries or making things like worry dolls and pinwheels. Then, after the sun sets, the mood changes completely with EDM busking and performances. Last year, the water playground was extended until 8 p.m. and, for the first time, it also opened at night. The night view, with the glass-fronted buildings of Songdo lit up and people playing below to DJ music, is the true highlight of this festival.

Do not expect English guidance; enjoy the festival with street smarts

To be honest, this festival is not an international event aimed at foreign tourists, but a summer celebration for local residents and families. So it is better not to expect English-only information or interpretation services. On the other hand, most of the content does not require language at all, such as water play, sand play, and water-gun fights, so even if you do not speak the language, you can still enjoy it physically. You just need to follow the safety instructions before boarding the water slide.

There are a few things worth knowing in advance. First, some participatory programs such as barefoot yoga, running classes, and campnic zones operate by advance reservation. If you are interested, it is better to check whether you need to apply in advance so you do not make a wasted trip. The water playground itself is free, but tubes and food cost extra, so make sure to bring enough payment options. And the biggest variable is the weather. Last year, one full day of programming was canceled due to severe weather, so if a typhoon or heavy rain is forecast, I recommend checking the official channels on the day of your visit to confirm whether it is operating. The midsummer sun is fierce, so do not forget to prepare for heat with cool zones, shade, and plenty of water.

It is a locally loved festival, with about 70,000 visitors over seven days last year, and if you are curious about how a new city without a sea gets through summer, it is worth stopping by and being prepared to get wet at least once.
