Walking Along the 1.8 km Seawater Canal of Songdo Central Park

Songdo Central Park is the central park of Songdo International Business District in the Incheon Free Economic Zone, completed on August 4, 2009. Four gardens starting from 160 Convensia-daero

The park's official location is around 160 Convensia-daero, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City, Songdo-dong 24-5. If this is your first visit, it is better to choose a destination and enter rather than trying to walk the entire park at once. The park is divided into areas with different characteristics, such as the formal garden, grass garden, promenade garden, and terrace garden.

The terrace garden is the area by the main entrance, with the boathouse and parking lot nearby, and reflects the concept of a Korean traditional garden's "madang" (courtyard). The grass garden includes a children's amusement area, a lawn plaza, and a visitor center, while the promenade garden is an area with a pine tree walkway and a stone-lined valley, as well as varying elevations.

Routes divided between Central Park Station and Incheon Univ. Entrance Station on Incheon Line 1

By public transportation, you can access the park via Central Park Station and Incheon Univ. Entrance Station on Incheon Line 1. If your eastern destinations are already set, such as the Hanok Village, Tri-Bowl, or East Boathouse, it is convenient to start from Central Park Station; if you plan to see POSCO Tower, Convensia, and the western waterside together, starting from Incheon Univ. Entrance Station is a good choice.

Since the park covers more than 370,000㎡ and the canal is 1.8 km long, walking along both sides of the canal and back may exceed 4 km. If your plan includes photos, rest, and a visit to the Hanok Village, allow 2~3 hours; if you add water activities or an observatory, half a day is a more reasonable estimate.

Preparation before walking the 1.8 km canal and using the paid parking lot

The park has a paid parking lot, and the official park guide states that there is parking near the terrace garden. At the time of the park's development in 2009, the underground parking lot was planned for about 2,700 vehicles, but current parking fees and available areas may vary depending on operating conditions, so if you plan to stay for a long time, you should check the on-site fee board before entering.

For a long walk along the canal, it is better to prepare water and a windbreaker. The waterside does not have consistent shade, and moving between the east and west sides of the park involves a long walking distance. Visitors with strollers or wheelchairs should prioritize the flat sections of the terrace garden and waterside, and consider whether they will have assistance on the stone paths and the elevated and lowered sections of the promenade garden.

Water taxis and East Boathouse are separate from park admission

The water facilities at Songdo Central Park are operated separately from the park's free admission. Water taxis are a way to see the buildings of Songdo International City, such as Tri-Bowl, G Tower, and POSCO Tower Songdo, from a different perspective on the canal, but the operating hours may change depending on sunrise and sunset. Visitors planning to take a boat should first ask the ticket office or operator about reservations, passenger capacity, conditions for accompanying children, and cancellation criteria for rain or strong winds.

How to group the Hanok Village, Tri-Bowl, and IFEZ Promotion Center in one direction

On the east side of the park, it is convenient to connect the Hanok Village and Tri-Bowl in one route. Tri-Bowl is introduced as a building shaped like three bowls, and it is a spot to view together with the buildings of Songdo's international business district around the canal. Rather than staying only inside the park, linking these spaces along the eastern waterside makes it easier to understand how Songdo built a planned city and waterside park together on reclaimed land.

If you want a view from above, the 33rd-floor observatory at the IFEZ Promotion Center is an option. Incheon Tour states that from here you can look down on Central Park, Incheon Bridge, and Songdo International City. The park's night scenery is characterized by building lights and reflections on the water, but the observatory and nearby facilities may have different operating hours from the park's opening hours, so separate confirmation is needed.

When night lighting and long round-trip walks may not be a good fit

Songdo Central Park is known for its night scenery, where the lights of tall buildings and the reflections on the canal stand out. However, because the park is large and the walking distance along both sides of the canal is long, it is not suitable for an itinerary that tries to see every garden, the Hanok Village, and the boathouse in a short time. It is clearer to set one or two destinations and leave the rest for a future visit.

If water activities are essential, travelers should prepare alternatives in winter or on days when rain or strong winds are forecast. On the other hand, travelers who want free admission, waterside walking, and urban architecture views can enjoy the gardens and Hanok Village during the day, then return to the canal around sunset to compare how the park changes in space and atmosphere.
