Since you cannot go directly to Gyeongpodae by KTX, you need to get off at Gangneung Station and transfer to a city bus bound for Gyeongpo or downtown. The bus stop at Gangneung Station is on the platform across the street, and routes to Ojukheon, Seongyojang, and Gyeongpo depart from there. That day is operated as 'Water Festa Day,' focused on water-related content, with the water-gun showdown called 'Gyeongpodaecheop' in the central plaza and mission games continuing on the floating bridge. If you are prepared to get completely soaked, this is the most exciting day. And if you want to enjoy the weekend evening atmosphere, aim for July 31 or August 1. On those two days, a beer garden tied to the Beach Beer Festival opens in the Songnim area, where you can taste craft beer and local food. At this beer garden, you really feel that Gangneung is not only a coffee city but also a craft beer city represented by Woodamoo Brewery.

When the sun goes down: concerts and an EDM party begin

The highlight of this festival is the night. Before the moisture from the daytime has even dried, the lights come on at the stage, and artists from different genres appear each day. The lineup changes by day, like the 'Gyeongpo 7DAYS Concert' blending hip-hop and R&B, so no matter which day you visit, you get a stage that feels unique to that day. I liked the moment when the sound of the waves and the bass vibrated together most of all. And once the main performance ends, the night heats up again as it shifts into an EDM party. On August 2, Water Festa Day, from 7 p.m., a water-bomb-themed show and an EDM party continue one after another, and the energy from the daytime water play carried straight into the night.

Because it is a night festival, it is important to plan your way home in advance. Performances and the EDM party go on late, but Gangneung city buses tend to stop before midnight, so it is safer to book lodging near Gyeongpo or Gangmun Beach and walk back, or to plan for a late-night taxi. If you stay at a place right in front of the beach, such as Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo, you can walk in within minutes after the show ends, which makes it easy to enjoy the night program to the very end. Most places accept cards and mobile payments, but on the temporary booths on the beach or at some food stalls, cash may be more convenient, so bringing a little cash in small bills will save you from any awkward moments.
