The Gunsan Craft Beer & Blues Festival is the city's signature summer festival, held at the Modern History Museum area on this early-summer night. Gunsan is one of Korea's major barley-producing regions, and it is rare in that barley cultivation, malt processing, and brewing are all connected within one city. As the festival has continued, its scale has grown, and in 2026 it will be held for three days, from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14, every day from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The opening ceremony begins at 6:15 p.m. on the first day.

There is no direct KTX service to Gunsan. From Seoul, the most convenient option is the express bus from Central City Terminal, which runs frequently at 15- to 60-minute intervals and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Gunsan city, take city bus No. 1, 2, 8, or 9 from the intercity bus terminal and get off at the Modern History Museum stop. If you're worried about catching buses at night in an unfamiliar city, I recommend booking accommodation near the venue, since the event takes place in the heart of the old downtown. Because the performances end at 10:00 p.m. and the area is designed to let you enjoy the afterglow afterward, it is a good idea to check the last bus time in advance if you're coming for a day trip from outside the city.

Once inside the venue, seating is arranged mainly around the Gunsan Beer Live Zone and the River View Zone overlooking the sea. There are about 5,000 table seats, making it a good place to sit with your group, clink beer glasses, and enjoy the music. It is not an event with continuous English interpretation, but language is not a major barrier when choosing beer, ordering food, and enjoying the music. The beer lineup is really impressive. The four Gunsan breweries are at the center, and breweries from across Korea that use Gunsan malt join in as well. Part of the fun is comparing beers from several countries in one place.

Food is just as exciting as the beer. True to Gunsan's reputation as a food paradise, about 30 local restaurant booths are set up, offering everything from seafood dishes to snacks and desserts. Since Gunsan is a port city, the seafood is fresh, and there is hardly a better pairing for beer. For families, there are also game experience zones such as darts and shooting, so even those who do not drink can spend time without getting bored.

The performance lineup is dazzling every year, featuring Korean blues veterans such as Kang San-ae and Sinchon Blues, as well as bands invited from Japan and the United States. Over the three days, 16 domestic and international teams take turns performing, so even if you go for just one day, you can experience a variety of stages.

Practical tips to avoid a wasted trip — weather and seating

There is just one thing to keep in mind: the weather. Mid-June often overlaps with the rainy season, and in some years the rain came and went throughout the festival. Still, even when it rained, the venue was packed and the performances continued, so if you check the forecast and bring an umbrella or raincoat, you will not need to cancel your plans because of rain. Although the gates open at noon, the atmosphere is best in the evening when the heat eases and the lights come on. If you want a good seat for the performances, arrive early and secure your spot before sunset.

For payment, it is easiest to use the gift certificate you receive at entry first, and then bring extra cash or a card in case it is not enough. Since these are outdoor booths, payment methods may not be unified. Wear comfortable shoes like sneakers.
