Gimhae’s Bongnidan-gil: A 500-Meter Alley Beside Gaya’s Old Harbor
Gimhae’s Bongnidan-gil is an approximately 500-meter alley where the old residential neighborhood of Bonghwang-dong meets cafés and restaurants. Walk along a route connecting Bonghwangdae Historic Park, the Daeseong-dong Ancient Tombs, and the Royal Tomb of King Suro, but watch for vehicles, as the narrow road has little separation between the sidewalk and roadway.

The 2017 transformation that turned Bonghwang-dong’s residential neighborhood into “Bongnidan-gil”
Bongnidan-gil is the common name for the old residential alleys in Bonghwang-dong, Gimhae. According to reports from 2017, its central section is approximately 500 m long, extending along Bunseong-ro 308beon-gil and 302beon-gil and Gimhae-daero 2273beon-gil from the five-way intersection where they meet. The name spread as a “-ridan-gil” nickname derived from Seoul’s Gyeongnidan-gil.
This alley was formerly known as “Fortune-Teller Alley,” but around 2017, cafés and restaurants opened there, changing the image of the empty residential area in the old city center. Rather than planning a visit around the operating hours of one business, it is better to use 50 Bonghwangdaegil, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, as a starting point and slowly choose among the individual shops in the alley.

Why the Gaya maritime route and Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park are right next to it
The special feature of Bongnidan-gil’s location lies less in the commercial district itself than in the density of Gaya-era historic sites nearby. Gimhae DMO introduces Bonghwang-dong as Bongnidan-gil and describes it, together with the Gaya Tumuli in Daeseong-dong and the multicultural street in Dongsang-dong, as an old downtown area where “old and new” meet.
The area around Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park is introduced as a place from which the sea could be seen in ancient times, and the Bonghwang-dong historic site is interpreted in connection with a trading port visited by ships during the Gaya period. Rather than ending your visit with only a meal or café stop, adding Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park and the Daeseong-dong Tumuli makes it easier to understand why old houses in the alley and the landscape of Gaya’s royal capital are located so close together.

A three-minute walk from Bonghwang Station, or a historic-site route from Suro Royal Tomb Station
If you want to reach the alley directly by public transportation, the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail’s Bonghwang Station is the shorter option. Some guides indicate that it takes approximately three minutes on foot from Bonghwang Station to the center of Bongnidan-gil. Numerous city buses stop at the Bonghwang Station bus stop, including routes 14, 21, 21-1, 30, 44, 56, 58-1, 59-1, 60, 61, 71, 72, and 300.
If you want to see historic sites first before entering the alley, a better option is to walk for approximately five minutes from Exit 2 of Suro Royal Tomb Station toward the Bonghwang-dong Historic Site Tourist Information Center and Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park. After moving from Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park into the commercial district and continuing to the Daeseong-dong Tumuli, you can walk along part of the 2-km “Gaya Street” route from Bonghwang Station to Yeonji Park described by Gimhae City.

Bongnidan Parking by Kakao T at 36 Bonghwangdaegil and the reality of walking through the alley
For those arriving by car, Bongnidan Parking by Kakao T is listed at 36 Bonghwangdaegil, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. It is described as a card-only parking facility where advance payment is available through the Kakao T app, so it is safer to prepare the app or a card rather than expect to pay in cash. However, fees and real-time availability may change, so check the app immediately before departure.
The narrow alley, where sidewalks and roads are not clearly separated, is the defining feature of Bongnidan-gil. A 2019 report noted that vehicles and pedestrians shared the space and that illegally parked cars made walking inconvenient. Visitors using strollers or wheelchairs should plan their route mainly around the level sections of the historic park and proceed slowly through the interior of the alley with a companion.

Why each shop must be checked when the alley has no admission fee or operating hours
Bongnidan-gil is an alley made up of public roads and individual shops, not a tourist attraction with fences or a ticket booth. Admission is therefore free, and there are no official operating hours, closing days, or main telephone number for the alley as a whole. When visiting, check the business days, break times, and possible ingredient sellouts separately for the restaurant or café you want to visit.
For example, the nearby restaurant Panache has previously been listed as open Thursday–Tuesday from 11:00–20:00, closed on Wednesdays, with a break from 14:30–17:00. This is an example for an individual business, not a rule for all of Bongnidan-gil. In practice, it is best to have lunch around 11:00 or before the break, and to check each business’s last order time in advance for dinner.

A half-day combined with the 136 Daeseong-dong Tumuli
After finishing a meal and café visit in Bongnidan-gil, consider adding the Daeseong-dong Tumuli to your route. Excavation surveys conducted since 1990 have identified two royal-level tombs of Geumgwan Gaya dating from the late fourth to early fifth century, along with tombs including those of several queens and consorts dating from the late third to the first half of the fifth century. The total number of tumuli is introduced as 136.
The Daeseong-dong Tumuli lie on a hill between Gujibong and the Bonghwang-dong Historic Site and are regarded as representative tombs of the ruling class of Geumgwan Gaya from the first to fifth centuries. A short visit focused on one or two restaurants is reasonable, but visitors interested in Gaya history should allow at least three hours for the alley, the tumuli, and Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park to avoid wasting time on travel.

An early lunch rather than an afternoon visit, and light rail rather than a car
A 2017 report described young visitors moving through the alley even at 15:00 on a Sunday, and more recent guides also mention that the street has many shops using former family homes. Although congestion at a particular time cannot be generalized, arriving around the start of lunch service rather than in the late afternoon on a weekend gives you more choices when comparing several small businesses with limited seating.
Because cars involve variables such as limited parking and narrow roads, walking from Bonghwang Station or Suro Royal Tomb Station is especially convenient on weekends. Conversely, if heavy rain is expected or you use a mobility aid, it is better to avoid making a long round trip through the alley, use the area near the information center or public parking lot at Bonghwangdae Historic Site Park as a base, and limit your visit to one or two shops.
