September 3–6: A Night Walk Through Jinju Castle with a Secret Royal Inspector
The 2026 Jinju National Heritage Night Walk will take place for four days, from Thursday, September 3, to Sunday, September 6, throughout Jinju Castle and the old downtown area. Now in its fifth year, the event has been selected for the Cultural Heritage Administration's public offering project for five consecutive years since 2022. This year's theme is “Secret Royal Inspector, Appear at Jinju Castle at Night.” With its clear concept of exploring history while walking through the night of Jinju Castle alongside a secret royal inspector, it seems likely to be an evening guided by a story rather than simply a chance to take photos against the fortress walls. Jinju Newspaper event introduction
This year’s program is expected to include a nighttime route illuminated by silk lanterns, a walking tour themed around the secret royal inspector, a horse-insignia stamp tour, an experience connected to a special exhibition on Park Mun-su, and demonstrations and performances of intangible cultural heritage. Nongae Market in Jinju will host a special night market, youth-oriented performances, exhibitions, activities, and a nighttime flea market. Eco-friendly camping will also be available at Jisu Seungsan Village, creating a route linking Jinju Castle with the old downtown area. The 2026 Jinju Castle National Heritage Media Art event will also run for 24 days from August 14 to September 6, so the final four nights of the Night Walk can be enjoyed together with the lights of “Gaon Nuri, Jinju Castle.” Asia Economy schedule article
The photos below show the site of the most recent Jinju National Heritage Night Walk, held in 2025. Looking at scenes where actors, lighting, and visitors are captured together in front of the castle gate, Jinju Castle’s stone steps and nighttime air seem to become part of the performance.

A 30-minute trip from Jinju Station and Nongae Market: A convenient route for foreign visitors
Jinju has no urban railway station, so it is difficult to navigate by subway exit numbers. Instead, the trip from Jinju Station to Jinju Castle takes about 30 minutes by bus or about 15 minutes by taxi. Jinju Intercity Bus Terminal is about a 10-minute walk or a 2-minute taxi ride from Jinju Castle, while the Express Bus Terminal is about a 30-minute walk or an 8-minute taxi ride away. For travelers with luggage, taking a taxi from Jinju Station and walking from the intercity bus terminal were much simpler options. Jinju National Heritage Night Walk transportation information
- The event organizing committee's address is 30 Mangyeongnam-gil, Jinju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Mangyeong-dong. Since the actual program stages are divided between Jinju Castle and the old downtown area, searching for accommodation around Jinju Castle or Nongae Market made getting around more convenient.
- Information about English signs, English explanations, and interpretation services for 2026 has not yet been released. However, some elements, such as the secret royal inspector walking tour and horse-insignia stamp tour, can be followed visually, so bringing a translation app and a portable charger made things much easier.
- Details about admission fees and card or mobile payment methods at the night market and flea market have also not appeared in the operating schedule. Since a special night market at Nongae Market is planned for September 3–6, 2026, it felt reassuring to prepare both an international card and some small cash.
- In 2025, the Kim Simin-ho operated at night on the Namgang River, offering views of Jinju Castle, with advance reservations required separately. Whether the same water program will return this year requires a separate announcement, but if you want to see the nighttime scenery along the Namgang River, it would be wise to check the event map first thing on the first day.
It was nice that experiencing cultural heritage was not limited to sitting in a performance venue. Inside the fortress, you encounter history and intangible cultural heritage; once outside, the route naturally continues into the nighttime atmosphere of Nongae Market and the old downtown area.

Jinju Castle drew 60,000 visitors in 2025: Allow plenty of time for evening travel
The 2025 Jinju National Heritage Night Walk attracted approximately 60,000 visitors over three days, from August 29 to 31. Since this year's event will also be concentrated in the evening, if you plan to visit the starting point of the walking tour and the Nongae Market night market, it would be best to arrive at Jinju Castle before sunset and plan your route first. The start times and advance registration procedures for each 2026 program have not yet been released all at once, so checking the performance schedule once before opening day on September 3 should significantly reduce waiting time. 2025 operating results
If you are driving, it is better to set out even earlier. In 2025, temporary parking with 1,317 spaces was provided at seven locations, including Insadong Public Parking Lot, the covered Nabulcheon roadway, Jinju Public Stadium, the Jinju Office of Education parking lot, Jinju Battle Historic Park, the Jungang District Public Parking Tower, and the former Jinju Cultural Center parking lot. However, this arrangement was based on 2025, so in 2026 it would be safer to prioritize same-day parking announcements rather than entering these locations directly as your destination.
Although the fortress paths are easier to walk in late summer than during the day, they include a mixture of stone steps and grassy areas. Supportive walking shoes, a light outer layer, water, and a portable charger made it much more comfortable to stand for performances or walk as far as the old downtown area. The 2026 layout of restrooms and rest areas has not yet been released in detail, but the National Jinju Museum and major points within Jinju Castle are included in the program route, so it would be helpful to familiarize yourself with their locations early on.

For travelers who enjoy horse-insignia stamps and silk lanterns
The Jinju National Heritage Night Walk seemed better suited to foreign friends who want to slowly walk through a city’s fortress and market at night while discovering its stories than to people who already know a great deal about Korean history. Even if terms such as secret royal inspector, horse insignia, Park Mun-su, and intangible cultural heritage performances are unfamiliar, seeing the silk lanterns, castle gates, and performance scenes together on site naturally creates a memorable sequence.
To me, Jinju’s appeal lies in the fact that Jinju Castle does not remain merely a backdrop. From September 3 to 6, you can explore the history inside the fortress, continue on foot to Nongae Market and the old downtown area, and, if the timing works, combine the trip with the media art event continuing through September 6. If you enjoy walking by the light and pausing for a moment in front of old fortress walls, this night could become a vivid first impression of Jinju.
