Why Jeon Hyuck-lim’s Home Site Became an Art Museum on May 11, 2003

The Jeon Hyuck-lim Museum of Art opened on May 11, 2003, in a newly built space replacing the house where Tongyeong-born painter Jeon Hyuck-lim lived for approximately 30 years from 1975. Jeon Hyuck-lim was born in Tongyeong in January 1916 and began making a name for himself in the local art world after being selected for the Busan Art Exhibition in 1938.

The building’s exterior consists of more than 7,500 20×20 cm ceramic tiles created from Jeon Hyuck-lim’s paintings and works by his son, Jeon Young-geun. The vivid blue reminiscent of the sea around Tongyeong and the geometric color fields reveal the museum’s central theme of color even before entering.

The entire front wall of the third floor is a large mural recreating Jeon Hyuck-lim’s 1992 work 〈Window〉 through a combination of tiles. Exterior photographs can be taken from the road, but since the building faces a two-lane road, it is safer to take photographs from the pedestrian area rather than stopping at the edge of the roadway.

From 〈Tongyeong Harbor〉 on the First Floor to the Jeon Young-geun Exhibition on the Third Floor: A 45-Minute Route

Allowing around 45 minutes usually gives visitors enough time to see both the exterior and interior. On the first floor, it is easy to focus on Jeon Hyuck-lim’s representative works, including 〈Tongyeong Harbor〉 and 〈New Mandala〉, and then examine everyday materials such as his art tools and shirts on the second floor.

Works by Jeon Young-geun are displayed on the third floor, revealing how one painter’s personal museum extends into the creative worlds of two generations of a father and son. Rather than quickly viewing only the textures up close, comparing the color fields of Jeon Hyuck-lim’s works on the first floor with the compositions of Jeon Young-geun’s works on the third floor makes the purpose of the visit clearer.

From Yonghwasageori Toward Mireuksan: Leave Large Buses at the Yonghwasa Temple Parking Lot

The museum is located in Bongsugol at the foot of Mireuksan Mountain. As you go from Yonghwasageori toward Mireuksan, the exterior comes into view. Nearby Bomnal Bookshop is reportedly reached by walking approximately 100 m toward the museum, turning left, and then walking another approximately 30 m. This makes it easy to continue on foot through the alleys of Bongsugol and to the bookshop after visiting the museum.

Although the facility information lists a parking lot and cafeteria, large tour buses stopping to pick up or drop off passengers on the two-lane road in front of the museum may occupy the traffic lane. Tongyeong City Council materials recommend parking large buses at the Yonghwasa Temple parking lot (288 Bongpyeong-dong) and continuing on foot. Even for passenger cars, it is better to inquire in advance, taking the narrow alleyways and available space at the site into account.

How to Experience Bongsugol’s Cherry Blossom Season Alongside the Living History at the Foot of Mireuksan

Bongsugol is an old name for Bongpyeong-dong and developed along the residential alleys beneath Mireuksan and the road leading to Yonghwasa Temple. Unlike Tongyeong’s traditional tourism areas, such as Ganggugan and Dongpirang, this neighborhood connects the area where the artist lived with small publishers and bookshops, making it a good place to explore the living history of the alleys after viewing the artworks.

In spring, the cherry blossoms around the Jeon Hyuck-lim Museum of Art and along the road toward Miraesa Temple on the mid-slopes of Mireuksan have often been mentioned. However, vehicle and pedestrian traffic may increase throughout Bongsugol during festival periods. If your main purpose is to visit the museum, it is better to arrive between 10:00 and 11:00, shortly after opening, and then continue to the bookshop and Jjimgolmok.
