Namhae German Village is a residential settlement created for the return and resettlement of Korean miners and nurses who had been sent to German coal mines and hospitals from 1963 to 1977. By connecting the seaside lanes overlooking Mulgeon-ri in Samdong-myeon, the German Dispatch Workers Exhibition Hall, the Horticultural Arts Village, and the Mulgeon-ri Coastal Fish Shelter Forest along one route, visitors can experience both the history and scenery of Namhae’s eastern coast.

Why the 1963–1977 period of dispatch to Germany remains in Mulgeon-ri, Samdong-myeon
Namhae German Village was created so that miners and nurses dispatched to German coal mines and hospitals from 1963 to 1977 could settle after returning home. Namhae-gun tourism information explains that the village began with a request from Korean residents of Berlin and Hamburg to create a German village during the 1997 sister-city agreement process between Namhae-gun and Nordfriesland County, Germany.
Later, a residential area of approximately 90,000㎡ with 50 households was developed in the Mulgeon-ri and Bonghwa-ri areas of Samdong-myeon. Starting in 2002, nurses and miners who had been dispatched to Germany and received plots brought construction materials from Germany and built houses in traditional German architectural styles. Therefore, this is not merely a themed space reproducing European-style buildings, but a real residential village where returning migrants’ homes and local tourism overlap.

Namhae German Village itself is free to explore. According to official information, the Paidog Exhibition Hall is open from 09:00 to 18:00, and admission costs 1,000 won. The exhibition hall presents the social background behind the village’s creation through miners’ work tools and clothing, materials about nurses’ lives in German hospitals, and a passage reproducing a mine tunnel 1,200 meters underground.
If you have limited time, it is easy to follow the story by visiting the exhibition hall first and then walking around the plaza and village lanes. Start at the parking lot at 89-7 Dogil-ro and descend through the lanes toward the sea

Drivers can use the German Village parking lot listed in the official information. Since traffic may be heavy on weekends, holidays, and during festivals, it is safest to give pedestrians priority in the narrow residential lanes after parking.
If you are relying solely on public transportation, a practical approach is to first check whether Public Bus No. 3, a rural-style transit service connecting major tourist destinations such as German Village and Boriam, is operating from Namhae Public Bus Terminal. The village is hilly, so wheelchair and stroller users should focus on the relatively level areas around the parking lot and plaza and avoid overly ambitious plans that require entering the steep residential lanes.
How to combine Mulgeon-ri Bangjo Eoburim and Horticultural Art Village in one half-day
Horticultural Art Village and Mulgeon-ri Bangjo Eoburim are located right near German Village. Namhae-gun explains that the area developed into a center of tourism in Namhae-gun as a yacht school opened around Mulgeon Port and German Village and Horticultural Art Village were established. Rather than simply moving on after looking at the village’s orange roofs, seeing the terrain of Mulgeon-ri, where the sea meets the forest, helps visitors understand the site’s setting.
Namhae-gun tourism information explains that passing through the German Village plaza and following the Hwa-cheon stream leads to Route 7 of the Namhae Barae-gil Trail, called Hwajeonbyeolgok-gil. Barae is a local word for the traditional practice of going out onto the tidal flats at low tide in Namhae to gather green laver, shellfish, sea mustard, sea snails, and other items. If long-distance trekking is not your goal, allow 1.5 to 2 hours for German Village and Mulgeon-ri Bangjo Eoburim, or 2 to 3 hours if you include the Paidog Exhibition Hall.
The beer festival that began in 2010 and the May Maifest: How to choose your visit date
The German Village Beer Festival began in 2010, based on Munich’s Oktoberfest. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture records the German Village Beer Festival as an annual event held every October and the German Village Maifest as a May event that began in 2022. Festival dates, paid programs, and traffic controls may change each year, so if you are visiting for a festival, check announcements from Namhae-gun or the Namhae Tourism and Culture Foundation before setting out.
On a non-festival day, it is convenient to complete the historical route in the morning, soon after the exhibition hall opens, and then walk around the plaza and the viewpoints toward the coast. On major event days, however, restaurant lines and parking congestion are likely, so drivers may want to arrive early rather than late in the morning. Namhae German Village was selected for the 2025–2026 Korea Tourism 100 list.
How to visit respectfully in a village of 50 residential households
German Village was planned as a settlement village with approximately 50 residential plots, so the gardens, entrances, and windows of the houses are residents’ private living spaces, not photo backdrops. The basic rule is to stay in the public plaza, roads, and open viewpoints, and not enter private property or occupy the area in front of an entrance for a long time.
A recurring observation in travel reviews is that the village is smaller than expected. Therefore, rather than filling an entire day with this site alone, it is better to combine places of interest such as the Paidog Exhibition Hall, Horticultural Art Village, Mulgeon-ri Bangjo Eoburim, and Mulmi Coastal Observatory. Namhae-gun states that Yangmarte Hill is located at 1311 Bonghwa-ri, about five minutes by car from German Village.
