Namhae Sangju Silver Sand Beach
A 2 km crescent-shaped stretch of silver sand backed by Geumsan like a folding screen, this representative beach of Gyeongsangnam-do is located in Sangju-myeon, Namhae County, and attracts 1 million visitors annually. Along with Geumsan, which is associated with a legend of Taejo Yi Seong-gye’s hundred-day prayer, it offers an auto campground and camping grounds, making it possible to enjoy not only swimming but also camping and trekking.

A Crescent-Shaped Coast Created by a 160,000㎡ Beach and 8,926㎡ Pine Grove
Sangju Eunmorae Beach is located in Sangju-myeon, 21 km south of Namhae-eup. A 2 km-long crescent-shaped white-sand beach stretches out, backed by the magnificent scenery of Geumsan like a long folding screen. The beach’s most distinctive feature is its gently sloping shore and fine sand, making it ideal for walking barefoot.
According to the official website of Sangju Eunmorae Beach Auto Camping Site, which operates the beach, the white-sand beach covers 160,000㎡ and the pine grove surrounding it covers 8,926㎡. The seawater temperature is 23–25℃, and the water depth is a gentle 0.5–4 m. Thanks to these conditions, nearly one million travelers visit every summer.
From Bogwangsan to Geumsan — The Name Changed by Yi Seong-gye’s Hundred-Day Prayer
Geumsan was originally called Bogwangsan after the Silla monk Wonhyo built Bogwangsa Temple here. Before founding the Joseon dynasty, Yi Seong-gye traveled around the country praying at famous mountains for the chance to ascend the throne, but received no divine response. Finally, after offering a hundred-day prayer beneath Sambulam Rock on Bogwangsan, he is said to have received a response from the mountain spirit and become king.
After ascending the throne, Yi Seong-gye promised to repay the mountain by covering the entire mountain in silk. When this proved impossible in reality, he followed a suggestion from one of his officials and changed the mountain’s name to Geumsan, using the character geum (錦), meaning “to wrap in silk that never disappears.” In 1903, during the Korean Empire period, the civil official Yun Jeong-gu erected two monuments commemorating Yi Seong-gye’s prayer site: the Namhae Geumsan Yeong-eung Gijeokbi and the Daehan Jungheung Songdeok Chukseongbi. These monuments are still kept in a monument pavilion beneath Sambulam Rock. Boriam Hermitage below the summit of Geumsan is regarded as one of Korea’s four great prayer sites, along with Hongryeonam at Naksan-sa Temple in Yangyang, Bomunam in Ganghwa-do, and Hyangiram in Yeosu.
Designated as Hallyeohaesang National Park in 1968, It Became a Sacred Place of Student Romance
Sangju Eunmorae Beach was developed as a swimming beach in the early 1960s and became a nationally renowned representative beach after being designated as Hallyeohaesang National Park in 1968. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was especially popular as a destination for university students and young people taking summer membership training trips.
Changes continued afterward. The integrated office of Sangju Eunmorae Beach was completed in 2011, and in 2014 the Hallyeohaesang National Park Management Office moved to Sacheon. On October 22, 2020, the third game of the Namhae Super Match in go between professional players Shin Jin-seo and Park Jeong-hwan was also held at the Pine Grove Outdoor Baduk Center.
30–45 Minutes by Bus Routes 501–504 from Namhae Public Bus Terminal
The address is 17-4 Sangju-ro, Sangju-myeon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. By public transportation, you can take rural buses 501, 502, 503, or 504 from Namhae Public Bus Terminal and arrive in approximately 30–45 minutes.
For those traveling by private vehicle or rental car, the beach is about 21 km south of Namhae-eup. A free public parking lot near the beach access road can accommodate approximately 150 small cars and 30 large vehicles. Traveling from Sacheon Airport by rental car or taxi is also possible, although the exact travel time varies depending on traffic conditions.
Free Access, but Lifeguards Are Present Only in July and August — Based on the 2024 Opening Dates
The beach itself is open year-round, and both admission and parking are free. However, the official opening period, when lifeguards are stationed, is limited to July and August each year. In 2024, the beach was open from July 5 to August 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. From August 1 to 15, it also operated with extended evening hours from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The operating website states that no safety managers are stationed there outside the official opening period, making it dangerous to swim alone. For inquiries, contact the Tourist Information Center (055-863-3573, 09:00–18:00) or the Marine Leisure Team at Namhae County Office (055-860-3073). The official website is sangjubeach.com. Note that this beach is included in an exclusive airspace for ultralight aerial devices, so drone filming is possible without separate permission.
Sangju Eunmorae Beach Auto Camping Site: 29 Caravan Sites out of 62
Located next to the beach, Sangju Eunmorae Beach Auto Camping Site is operated by the Sangju Prosperity Association, a local residents’ organization in Sangju-myeon, under contract from Namhae County. On a site of approximately 3,000 pyeong, there are 62 sites suitable for auto camping. Of these, 29 allow guests to set up personal caravans. Facilities include showers, restrooms, a water-drawing station, electricity, and Wi-Fi.
Under the official reservation system, based on a 24-hour schedule, check-in is at 14:00 and check-out is at 12:00 the following day. A 5,000-won discount for consecutive nights applies from the second day, but this discount is not available during the peak season of July and August. Site fees are listed at approximately 8,000 won for a standard site (one space) and 13,000 won for a tent-canopy site (two spaces), but they may change following amendments to local regulations, so confirmation is recommended before booking. Fishing, bicycle rentals, and shellfish-gathering experiences are available at the campground, which operates year-round.
Dooldaseot’s “Night Boat” Song Monument, Summer Festival, and Winter Sunrise Celebration
At the beach entrance stands a song monument dedicated to “Night Boat,” performed by the folk group Dooldaseot. Around the monument, visitors can listen to 10 representative songs by Dooldaseot, including “Night Boat,” “Girl with Long Hair,” and “The Child with Big Eyes,” adding a touch of romance to the walking route.
The seasonal events are also distinctive. In summer, the Summer Festival brings energy to the beach, while in winter, a Sunrise Festival is held for visitors coming to watch the sunrise. The area also features an old-fashioned vegetable hot dog available only here, atmospheric cafés run by people who have moved to the countryside, and restaurants operated by residents who have watched over Sangju for many years.
When Should You Go? Timing According to the Tides and Visitor Reviews
With a gently sloping water depth of 0.5–4 m and relatively warm water temperatures of 23–25℃, the beach is widely considered suitable for family vacations with children. However, because as many as one million people visit each year, the beach and parking areas become very crowded on peak-season weekends in July and August.
Online community and blog reviews repeatedly mention a special photo spot at one side of the beach that became known through Instagram, leading to a growing number of visitors who come mainly to take photographs rather than swim. There is no shade on the white-sand beach outside the pine grove, so bringing a parasol or sun shelter is recommended when visiting around midday.
A Day Combining Geumsan and Boriam, and Who May Not Enjoy This Beach
Geumsan, which surrounds the beach, is home to Boriam, regarded as one of Korea’s three great prayer sites. Many visitors plan a day by touring Geumsan and Boriam in the morning and enjoying water activities at the beach in the afternoon. From Sangju Port in the Namhae District of Hallyeohaesang National Park, visitors can also take a sightseeing cruise around the Dadohae District, Nodo, Mijo Port, and other destinations.
On the other hand, this beach may not suit everyone. Those expecting a quiet, uninhabited beach may be disappointed by the crowds and campground noise during the July–August peak season. If you want to swim in spring, fall, or winter outside the official opening period, entering the water is practically difficult because no lifeguards are present. Pets are allowed, but muzzles and leashes are mandatory for aggressive dogs, while ordinary pet dogs must also be kept on a leash. During the opening period, a separate swimming area for dogs is designated, so keep this in mind in advance.
