From beneath 45,133 silver panels to Igansumun — Seoul DDP Dongdaemun Design Plaza

The site where the sports field stood in 1925, after demolition in 2007, and where DDP was built on March 21, 2014

DDP is not simply a newly built exhibition hall. This site once had the Dongdaemun Sports Field, built in 1925 and used for 82 years until it was demolished in 2007. During the demolition of the sports field and the creation of the park, the Seoul Fortress Wall, a well site, an ashpit facility, and military facilities related to the defense of the capital were uncovered, and the building and park were designed in a way that left these remains visible rather than erasing them.

In the international design competition, Zaha Hadid's ‘Metonymic Landscape’ was selected as the winning entry in August 2007. Against the backdrop of the Dongdaemun wholesale district's fast logistics, nighttime business, and fashion industry, the design proposed curved surfaces that connect like a landscape rather than a vertical building. DDP began construction in 2009, opened on March 21, 2014, and was completed with a total floor area of 86,574㎡ and 3 basement levels to 4 above-ground levels.

A 35m cantilever and 45,133 panels — the order in which to read the building itself

When viewing the exterior, it is easier to understand the structure if you look up from Uiryeom Plaza. The cantilever projecting out like an eave without columns beneath it reaches 35m, and the mega truss and space frame support the irregular curved surfaces. The silvery skin is made of 45,133 aluminum panels with different colors, perforations, curvatures, and divisions, and there are 14 panel patterns.

If it is your first time here, it is less confusing to come out of Exit 1 of the station into Uiryeom Plaza, then move along the large curves of the outer wall toward Palgeori and Jandi Hill, and finally enter the building. Since 2024, rooftop tours that walk the three-dimensional curved surfaces of the roof have also been operating, allowing you to see from a different height how the curves viewed from the ground connect with the urban landscape.

Why the two-arched Igan Water Gate is viewed together with the Dongdaemun History Museum open from 10:00 to 19:00

In Dongdaemun History & Culture Park south of DDP, the Igan Water Gate remains as a waterway facility of the Joseon-era fortress wall. As its name suggests, it is a water gate made of two arches, and together with the fortress wall, extant wall bastions, and everyday remains confirmed through excavations on the former Dongdaemun Sports Field site, it shows that this area was the boundary outside the capital long before modern sports facilities were built.

The context of the relics can be supplemented at the Dongdaemun History Museum and the Dongdaemun Sports Field Memorial Hall. Both facilities are open from 10:00 to 19:00 and are closed every Monday, January 1, and on Seollal and Chuseok holidays. The History Museum phone number is 02-2153-0200, and the Sports Field Memorial Hall phone number is 02-2153-0201. Since this differs by one hour from DDP's regular operating hours of 10:00 to 20:00, it is better to see the relic exhibition first and then move on to the architecture so you do not run into closing time.

Separating the free public space from exhibition tickets when calculating 10:00 to 20:00

DDP's basic operating hours are 10:00 to 20:00 every day, and it is closed on January 1, Seollal day, and Chuseok day. Salimter is also closed on the third Monday of every month. Free does not mean that every program in the entire building is free. Special exhibitions, children's experiences, and performances in the exhibition halls each have their own ticketing and operating hours. For example, ‘Baby Shark Secret Invitation: Becoming Shark,’ held at DDP Museum Exhibition Hall 2 from June 18 to December 19, 2026, operates separately from 10:00 to 20:00, with last admission at 19:00, and is closed on the third Tuesday of every month.

Exit 1 of Lines 2, 4, and 5, Bus 2012, and the practical choice of a 24-hour parking lot

The subway's most direct access is Exit 1 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station on Lines 2, 4, and 5. Leaving the exit and entering directly toward DDP Uiryeom Plaza reduces the time first-time visitors spend finding their way on the surface. By bus, you can use route 2012 at the ‘Dongdaemun Design Plaza’ stop, and routes 105, 144, 152, 261, 301, 420, 2012, 2015, 2233, and 7212 at the ‘Dongdaemun History & Culture Park’ stop.

Vehicles can use the DDP affiliated parking lot 24 hours a day. The regular parking fee is 400 won per 5 minutes, 4,800 won per hour, and 50,000 won per day maximum. The parking customer service number is 02-2153-0141. On weekdays, the last-digit driving restriction by day applies, so vehicles with license plate endings of 1 or 6 on Monday, 2 or 7 on Tuesday, 3 or 8 on Wednesday, 4 or 9 on Thursday, and 5 or 0 on Friday are subject to it. For weekday visits, the subway is the clearest option in terms of route and cost.

10:30 Korean, 14:30 English, 16:00 Korean — the day to include the 60-minute architecture tour

If you want to hear about the meaning of the architecture as well, you can add the 2026 DDP architecture tour to a separate schedule. The tour operates Tuesday through Saturday, with sessions at 10:30 in Korean, 14:30 in English, and an additional 16:00 Korean session from June 1 to August 31. The meeting point is the DDP Lounge tour desk near the A3 and A4 entrances on the first floor of Art Hall, and the duration is 60 minutes.

The participation fee is 10,000 won for the general public, 8,000 won for national merit recipients, military personnel, and persons with disabilities, and 5,000 won for children aged 4 to 12 and youth groups of 20 or more. Children aged 4 and older may participate, and those under 13 must be accompanied by a guardian. Advance online booking is the norm, and if seats remain, on-site registration is accepted from 10 minutes before the start. Tour inquiries are handled Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, excluding the lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00, at 02-2153-0310 or 02-2153-0311.

90 minutes in daylight, 150 minutes with exhibitions — how to continue from DDP to Dongdaemun's night shopping district

If you only see the architecture and relics without an exhibition ticket, 90 minutes is enough. From Exit 1 of the station, allow 15 minutes to Uiryeom Plaza, 20 minutes to Palgeori and Jandi Hill, 35 minutes around the Igan Water Gate, the extant remains exhibition hall, and the History Museum, and 20 minutes for the indoor design store and lobby. If you also look inside the History Museum, 120 minutes is appropriate, and if you add a paid exhibition or architecture tour, it is better to set aside 150 minutes or more.

While there is still daylight, it is efficient to view the full outline of the exterior from Jandi Hill and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, then see the illuminated outer walls again after sunset. However, media facade events such as Seoul Light are held only during designated festival periods, so rather than aiming for a specific nighttime work, it is better to combine exhibitions and plaza programs based on the DDP event schedule for the date of your visit. For travelers who want to see both the building's form and the capital's relics together, it is highly dense; but if you expect only a quiet museum visit, the atmosphere on days with rental events and crowds may not be a good fit.
