Dongdaemun is the gateway to eastern Seoul, where the treasure Heunginjimun, the Seoul City Wall, the Dongdaemun General Market, which opened in 1970, and DDP, which opened in 2014, overlap in one area. Visits to the gate are always free, but the market, exhibitions, and late-night wholesale shops all have different hours, so it is better to plan your route according to your purpose.

Why It Remained from the East Gate in 1398 to Heunginjimun in 1869
As a travel destination, “Dongdaemun” is more accurately understood not as the administrative district of Dongdaemun-gu, but around Heunginjimun at 288 Jongno, Jongno-gu, Seoul. It was built in 1398, the 7th year of King Taejo of Joseon, as the great eastern gate of Hanyang Doseong, and the current structure was rebuilt in 1869, the 6th year of King Gojong, after reinforcing the ground. The cultural heritage name is Heunginjimun, but people in Seoul still call it Dongdaemun.
Heunginjimun is Treasure No. 1, and the key feature is that the two-story gate pavilion and the semicircular outer wall surrounding the gate still remain together. Because Seoul’s terrain is higher in the west and lower in the east, it was necessary to strengthen eastern defense, so an outer wall was added in front of the gate. Rather than just passing by the gate in the middle of the road, if you go up toward Heunginjimun Park, you can see both the inside of the outer wall and the side of the gate pavilion.

The direct route from Exit 6 and 7 of Dongdaemun Station on Lines 1 and 4 to Heunginjimun
If you want to see Heunginjimun first, Exit 6 or 7 of Dongdaemun Station on Subway Lines 1 and 4 is the simplest choice. The exit connects directly to the gate, and if you want to use the entrance to Heunginjimun Park, it is about 130 m from Exit 1. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station on Lines 2, 4, and 5 is convenient if you want to see DDP first, and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park is about a 2-minute walk from Exit 2.
The listed address, 214 Wangsan-ro, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, is a Cheongnyangni-area address and is different from the Dongdaemun tourism area where Heunginjimun and DDP are located. When setting your navigation destination for the gate, you should enter “Heunginjimun” or “288 Jongno, Jongno-gu, Seoul.” If you use a bus, base it on the stop name “Dongdaemun (Heunginjimun),” but since construction or route adjustments are possible, it is safest to check the real-time route information on the day of departure.

Heunginjimun, open year-round and free of charge: how to visit with the park viewpoint in mind
Heunginjimun and Heunginjimun Park are open year-round and at all times, and admission is free. Since this is a cultural heritage site viewed from the outside rather than a facility you freely enter inside the gate pavilion, 20 to 30 minutes is enough if you divide your photos and observations into three viewpoints: the front of the gate, the outer wall, and the upper side of the park. No separate ticketing or reservation is required.

Visitors who only planned flat shopping do not need to force this section into their itinerary, but it is useful for understanding that Dongdaemun was not merely a clothing commercial district, but the boundary of the old city wall.
Conversely, if you include the fortress path toward Naksan, the section from Hyehwamun to Heunginjimun becomes 3.2 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes. Because there are uphill stretches and stairs through Naksan Park and Ihwa Mural Village, it may not suit itineraries with ankle discomfort or strollers. Walk when the sun is lower rather than during the summer midday heat, and in some sections passing through residential areas, it is necessary to keep noise down.

Dongdaemun Fashion Town Tourism Special Zone was designated on May 23, 2002, and is introduced as an area with 31 large shopping complexes, about 30,000 shops, and around 150,000 fashion workers, including traditional markets and modern shopping malls. This scale is possible because the sewing, pattern-making, and finished-garment production base in the Changsin-dong and Sindang-dong areas is closely connected to the fabric and accessory distribution of Dongdaemun General Market.
If you are planning a nighttime visit, it is important to note that not all shopping complexes stay open late. The tourism special zone guide states that 22 nighttime wholesale shopping complexes generally operate from 21:00 to 07:00, and 6 shopping complexes are open 24 hours. Depending on whether ordinary tourists want to make retail purchases or business visitors want to look around the wholesale district, the visiting time should be chosen accordingly, and since each shopping complex has different closed days and wholesale sales conditions, it is necessary to check the notices of the relevant complex just before visiting.

DDP and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park opened in March 2014: a design route built on historic remains
DDP, built on the site of Dongdaemun Stadium, opened in March 2014. If you walk south from Heunginjimun, the remains of the old city wall’s Igangsumun, the fortress wall traces, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, and Zaha Hadid’s DDP appear in sequence. The characteristic of this area is that you can compare Joseon-era fortress defenses, the former site of Gyeongseong Stadium during the Japanese colonial period, and a modern design complex all in one place.
The DDP architectural tour begins at the tour desk on the first floor of the DDP Museum (Learning Room), and runs Tuesday to Sunday at 10:30 in Korean, 13:30 in English, and 15:30 in Korean. Admission is free, the duration is 60 minutes, and it is closed every Monday and on New Year’s Day, Seollal, and Chuseok. Reservations are available for individuals of 1 to 8 people and groups of 9 to 20 people, and if seats remain, on-site registration is possible 10 minutes before the start.
