The History of Gangcheonsan and Gangcheonsa, Designated as Korea’s First County Park in 1981

Gangcheonsan County Park was designated as the nation’s first county park in 1981. The park’s official guide explains that the mountain was also called Yongcheonsan because it resembles a dragon flicking its tail as it rises into the sky. The current main entrance address is 97, Gangcheonsangil, Paldeok-myeon, Sunchang-gun, Jeonbuk State.

Gangcheonsa lies at the cultural heart of the mountain and its valley. According to the official history, Gangcheonsa was founded by Doseon in 887 and, after being burned down along with 12 hermitages during the Imjin War, was rebuilt by Taeneung in 1604. Buildings destroyed again during the Korean War have been restored since 1959, and the temple currently remains a branch temple of Seonunsa.

The Standard 5.5 km, Two-Hour Route from Byeongpung Falls to Gujanggung Falls

For first-time visitors, it is best to use the official “Barefoot Trail” route from Byeongpung Falls → Gangcheonsa → Cloud Bridge → Gujanggung Falls as a reference. The official estimated time is two hours, but allowing 2.5 to 3 hours from entry is safer when time spent at Gangcheonsa and around the waterfalls, as well as the return journey, is taken into account.

If you want to focus more on hiking, the 6.2 km course linking Gitdaebong, Wangjabong, and Cloud Bridge is listed as taking three hours, while the 8.7 km course linking Wangjabong, Hyeongjebong, the Second Lake, and Gujanggung Falls is listed as taking four hours. The full traverse course is 18.6 km and takes eight hours, so it requires a different level of preparation from a typical leisurely visit.

  • Light visit: 5.5 km, about 2 hours
  • Wangjabong Course 1: 6.2 km, about 3 hours
  • Wangjabong Course 2: 8.7 km, about 4 hours
  • Full traverse: 18.6 km, about 8 hours

What to Know About the 76 m Long, 50 m High Suspension Bridge

Gangcheonsan Suspension Bridge is listed as 76 m long, 50 m high, and 1 m wide. Since it is a pedestrian bridge with limited width, visitors who make Cloud Bridge their destination should choose shoes with good traction and maintain space between members of their group while walking.

The suspension bridge is included in the 5.5 km standard route connecting Gangcheonsa and Gujanggung Falls. The park’s official introduction lists the drop at Gujanggung Falls as 120 m, so continuing to the falls rather than turning back after viewing only the suspension bridge makes for a more efficient itinerary. However, admission, exit procedures, or operation of some sections may be adjusted in rainy or typhoon conditions.

Records from 1316 and 1506 Revealed by Gangcheonsa’s Five-Story Stone Pagoda and Samindae

The five-story stone pagoda within Gangcheonsa is Jeollabuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 92. The official guide records that it was built in 1316, the third year of the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, when Deokhyeon rebuilt Gangcheonsa. It was designated on December 27, 1979, and also underwent restoration after suffering wartime damage.

Samindae is Jeollabuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 27. It is described as the place where Kim Jeong, magistrate of Sunchang County; Park Sang, magistrate of Damyang Prefecture; and Yu Ok, magistrate of Muan County, joined together to request the restoration of Lady Sin, who had been deposed after the Jungjong Restoration of 1506. The Samindaebi stele in the current stele pavilion was erected in 1744 and is recorded as 157 cm high and 23 cm thick.

Prepare Before the Baby Maple Season: Seasonal Closing Times and Foot Protection

The park’s official introduction highlights azaleas, forsythias, and cherry blossoms in spring; valleys and waterfalls in summer; baby maple foliage in autumn; and snowy scenery in winter. Since weekend visitors may increase during the foliage season, it is better to plan to arrive in the morning, taking both parking and the 18:00 admission cutoff into account.

Although its official name is the Barefoot Trail, this does not mean that visitors must walk barefoot along the entire 5.5 km section to Gangcheonsa, the suspension bridge, and Gujanggung Falls. If you need to protect your feet or plan to continue to the waterfall section, prepare hiking shoes or athletic shoes with slip-resistant features, and decide whether to walk barefoot based on your foot condition and the weather.

Continue from Sunchang’s First of Ten Scenic Views to Chaegyesan and the Gochujang Folk Village

Gangcheonsan is listed as the first of Sunchang’s Ten Scenic Views. The same list includes Janggunmok, Chaegyesan Suspension Bridge, Hyangga Recreation Area, and Sunchang Traditional Gochujang Folk Village. To experience Sunchang’s cuisine and fermentation culture after hiking, consider visiting Sunchang Traditional Gochujang Folk Village; if you want more height and expansive views, it is suitable to schedule Chaegyesan Suspension Bridge as a separate itinerary.

Even within Gangcheonsan, temple ruins, valley paths, the suspension bridge, and waterfalls overlap along one route. Visitors using strollers or wheelchairs should not assume that the entire park is a single barrier-free course. Regardless of its designation as an Open Tourism Site in 2021, it is advisable to ask the management office at 063-650-1672 in advance about the slope, surface conditions, and access restrictions on the intended section.
