Photo Spots

  • Seolcheonbong photo zone after getting off the Muju Deogyusan Gondola (185 Manseon-ro, Seolcheon-myeon, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do): After getting off the gondola, move to the Seolcheonbong observation area. To capture both the mountain ridgeline and the snowy scenery, it is best to shoot while facing the northeast mountain ridge direction. The 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. period offers clear air and crisp snow scenery, making for great photos.
  • Observatory at the summit area of Seolcheonbong (185 Manseon-ro, Seolcheon-myeon, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do): This is one of the best places for wide-background photos of the Baekdudaegan. For portrait shots, try standing and shooting with the mountain ridgeline behind you, facing southeast to east. The period from late morning to before noon offers the most stable light and visibility.
  • Hyangjeokbong summit (Simgok-ri, Seolcheon-myeon, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do): This is a representative photo spot reachable by hiking up the trail from Seolcheonbong. To take a photo with the summit marker, compose the shot with the summit stone in the foreground and the mountain scenery visible behind it. In the early morning, there are relatively fewer people, and in winter it is a great place to capture snow-covered tree scenery.
  • Snow-covered tree photography point (Seolcheonbong to Hyangjeokbong section): This is the most popular photo section in winter. When frost flowers form on the trees, stand and shoot from the side rather than with your back to the sunlight to bring out the texture more clearly. On very cold mornings below minus 6 degrees Celsius, snow-covered trees form especially well, allowing you to capture the most impressive photos.

Night View

Jeonbuk Muju Deogyusan 야경

The night in the Muju Deogyusan area is ideal for enjoying a natural darkness and starlight atmosphere rather than brilliant lighting. During the day, you can see Deogyusan and the Gucheondong Valley scenery, and at night, a quiet and calm evening view around the Namdaecheon and Bandi Byeol Astronomical Science Museum area fits well into the itinerary.

The area is characterized by an atmosphere suitable for stargazing rather than an urban nightscape with strong lighting, and on clear days it is good for viewing the stars. A reasonable visit time is from after sunset until around 9 p.m. If you are traveling late, it is a good idea to check transportation options and the temperature in advance.

As a night program, outdoor movie screenings may be held at the Muju Deungnamu Stadium or around the Deogyusan National Park main gathering area. These are operated according to the movie program schedule and may require advance registration, so please check the official notice before visiting.

Muju has been designated as a night-tourism promotion city, so nighttime tourism content may expand depending on the season or event period. If you are hoping for a special night event, it is best to check the latest event schedule before your trip.

Seasonal Guide

Muju Deogyusan has distinct seasonal changes, making it a mountain destination with different charms no matter when you visit. For foreign travelers, it is a good idea to prepare clothing and transportation plans differently depending on the season.

Spring

In spring, the slopes of Deogyusan and the Muju Gucheondong area change into a clear and gentle landscape. It is nice for enjoying fresh greenery and spring flowers around the lower mountain and valley areas, but since it is not especially famous as a cherry blossom spot, it is best to think of it as a place for walking and enjoying nature. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so bring a light outer layer.

Summer

Summer is the best time to enjoy the main appeal of the Muju Gucheondong Valley. Thanks to the deep, cool streams and forest trails, it is popular as a natural summer retreat. You can take a light walk while listening to the refreshing sound of water or escape the heat around the valley. Because some paths may be slippery, sneakers or trekking shoes are recommended.

Autumn

In autumn, Deogyusan's red foliage is the biggest attraction. The entire mountain turns vivid with autumn colors, making it especially good for photography and scenic viewing. During foliage season weekends, there are many visitors, so an early departure is advantageous.

Winter

In winter, Deogyusan's snow-covered scenery is extremely beautiful, so it is often mentioned as a first-snow travel destination. The snowy landscape is the main highlight, and since the weather is very cold and the paths may freeze, prepare warm clothing, gloves, and anti-slip shoes. Rather than winter lights or nighttime illumination, the focus is on enjoying the natural snow scenery.

To summarize the seasonal highlights: spring is for refreshing walks, summer for valley escapes, autumn for foliage, and winter for snowy scenery.

Local Tips

If you plan to use the gondola, it is a good idea to arrive at the ticket booth by 9:00 a.m. Arriving early also makes it easier to park in a lot close to the ticket office.

In winter, preparing basic gear such as warm clothing, crampons, and gaiters will help even first-time visitors move around with relatively little difficulty.

As you pass Hyangjeokbong Shelter, you can see the yew and Khingan fir scenery, so it is a good place to enjoy the landscape even while moving.
