How Far Can You Explore Bangseonmun Valley? Restricted Areas and the Ora Olle Route

Bangseonmun, a rock gateway in Jeju’s Hancheon Valley, is known for its name meaning “the gate visited by immortals” and its scenic Yeonggunchunhwa inscriptions. However, as of 2026, the main Bangseonmun Valley area is closed due to the risk of falling rocks, so actual visits should be planned around the forest trail and the Ora Olle route.

Why Was Bangseonmun Called the ‘Gate Visited by Immortals’?

Bangseonmun is located in the middle of Jeju’s Hancheon Valley, taking the form of a large rock gate with a roof and open front and back. Its name, Bangseonmun (訪仙門), is introduced as meaning “the gate visited by immortals,” and it is also described as a boundary separating the inner and outer areas of Hallasan.

The Bangseonmun area is the setting of Yeongguchunhwa (瀛邱春花), one of the Twelve Scenic Views of Yeongju. The name refers to a scene in which azaleas, known as Jeju chamkkot, dye the cliffs red and their colors are reflected in the clear valley water.

More Than 50 Rock Inscriptions Left by Joseon-Era Governors and Exiles

Records describe governors, local officials, and exiles who came to Jeju visiting Bangseonmun to enjoy the pleasures of nature and the arts. More than 50 rock inscriptions left by them remain, including Bangseonmun (訪仙門) and Deungyeonggu (登瀛丘).

The Bangseonmun area is also introduced as the setting of the humorous novel Baebijangjeon, one of the twelve sections of pansori. The valley’s rocks and pools are not only natural scenery but also places where visitors can read records of visits by Joseon-era Jeju officials and literary figures.

In 2026, You Cannot Descend to the Area Beneath the Rock Gate

As of 2026, the forest path leading to the valley entrance can be explored, but access to Bangseonmun Valley itself is restricted because of the risk of falling rocks caused by bedrock cracks. Areas fitted with safety ropes are also off-limits, so do not plan an itinerary that involves entering inside the rock gate or going down to the valley floor.

Unroped sections of the forest path can be walked with caution. An official tourism information review dated December 25, 2020, also states that visitors could not approach Bangseonmun directly and instead looked down from a nearby walking path. Thus, the current viewing style is closer to “views from the walking path” than “close access.”

A 1.7 km Forest Path and Ora Olle Starting in Jeju City

Official Jeju City materials indicate that the route from Dokgae to Bangseonmun is approximately 1.7 km and takes about 35 minutes on foot. Introduced as a walking course called the “Forest Path to Bangseonmun, Walking with Immortals,” this is better understood as a forest-path access route than as a tourist attraction reached by car directly in front of the rock gate.

Another route, Ora Olle, follows Hancheon across downtown Jeju from Gojigyo to Bangseonmun Valley. Because Bangseonmun Valley is often closed for safety reasons, a route from Gojigyo through the Halla Library–Jeju Arts Center section is introduced, and visitors can descend to Ora Olle via the side path behind Halla Library.

Gingiso, Aegiso, and Changgomso Along Ora Olle

Ora Olle includes both sections covered with palm mats over dirt paths and uneven rocky paths. Pools formed by Hancheon and unusual rock formations continue along the route. A key point for understanding the valley’s waterways is that it is a dry stream, usually lacking water and filling only after rain.

During the walk, Gingiso, Aegiso, Daramswigwe, and Changgomso are introduced in succession. Gingiso was named because there were once many crabs there, while a tragic love story involving a Joseon-era official and a gisaeng is associated with Aegiso. After rain, the scenery of Hancheon Valley may become especially striking.

Why You Should Prepare Hiking Shoes Instead of Sandals or Dress Shoes

Ora Olle includes not only dirt paths and palm-mat sections but also uneven rocky paths, so official tourism information advises against wearing sandals or dress shoes. Rocky paths and valley terrain may make it difficult to travel the entire route by wheelchair or stroller, making this a place focused more on walking through natural terrain than on accessibility.

The valley itself and areas inside the safety ropes cannot be entered, and caution is also required on the forest path. Public sources do not confirm whether photography is prohibited, whether payment is cash-only, whether English guidance is available, whether an audio guide exists, or what detailed seasonal and weather-related restrictions apply. Travelers should therefore take photos from outside the restricted boundary and move without crossing the guide lines.
