The building still has an old sign that says "Suwha Restaurant." According to the Jeju Tourism Organization, the sign has been preserved rather than removed, and the bookstore is across from Gwandeokjeong. Since it is easy to mistake this for a place to look for a restaurant, it is better to check the address and alley location as well as the sign.
12:00~18:00, a timetable to confirm holiday closures through @jeju_afterbooks announcements
According to tourism information, operating hours are daily from 12:00 to 18:00. Regular closing days are not fixed and are announced separately, so you should check the latest post on Instagram @jeju_afterbooks on the day of departure. Some other platforms show different hours, so it is safest to use the 12:00~18:00 schedule as the standard.
Admission is free, and the contact number is 010-3022-8520. If you are visiting to choose books, you can plan for 30 to 60 minutes; if you are dropping by briefly between walks around Gwandeokjeong and Jejumok Gwana, about 20 to 30 minutes should be enough. The availability of the bookseller experience and accommodation-related conditions may vary by period, so advance inquiry by phone or Instagram is necessary.
A small bookshelf for independent publications, Ihujin Press, and books about living in Jeju
Afterbooks Jeju is introduced as a place that handles independently published books selected by the bookseller alongside commercially published books. It suits people who want to see handmade books and books in formats that are hard to find in large bookstores, but if you are expecting a spacious shop or a large stock of bestsellers, you should first keep in mind that it is a small space.
A single sentence left on the "Book Tear" wall and the bookseller program
The "Book Tear" wall on one side of the bookstore is a participatory corner where visitors can tear off favorite lines from books and leave notes. The books used there may change frequently, so when you visit, it is better to check the actual operation and participation method on site.
Unlike the Seoul branch, the Jeju branch also operates accommodation and has introduced a chance to act as a one-day bookseller. Information announced by the Jeju Tourism Organization in 2022 included hands-on experience from Friday to Sunday, 12:00 to 18:00, Thursday work training, and women-only accommodation, but that was the program information at the time. Gwandeokjeong is connected to the government facilities of Jeju Mok, so the bookstore offers a contrast between viewing contemporary independent publications and walking traces of Jeju's administrative center in the Joseon Dynasty outside.
For walking access, set your destination to "3, Gwanduk-ro 4-gil" and look for the old restaurant sign in the alley across from Gwandeokjeong. For visitors arriving by car, it is stated that parking at the bookstore itself is not available, so you should separately check whether nearby public parking lots can be used and what the fees are. Since it is a small bookstore in a narrow alley, it is more convenient to stop by as part of a downtown walking itinerary than to stay a long time with large luggage.
