Gasaegi Oreum is a volcanic hill located in the area of 2848 Ora 3-dong, Jeju-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and in public data its location is also listed as 2845 Ora 3-dong. Its elevation is 115 m, the height difference from the surrounding ground is 20 m, the area is 17,198 ㎡, the circumference is 490 m, and the width is 167 m.

Its form is a conical volcanic body without a crater. A long ridge running north to south is covered with red pines, and graves are scattered around the area. It is best to visit expecting only a short walk to the summit, and it has a different character from oreum that travelers visit to walk around a wide crater.

The name Gasaegi and Gasabong, read as the ‘puppy’ of Min Oreum

Gasaegi Oreum is also known by the nicknames Gasabong, Gasakbong, Gasakki Oreum, and Gaesaekki Oreum. The Digital Jeju Cultural Encyclopedia explains that the name came from a feng shui interpretation in which the southern Min Oreum was seen as a dog, and the small oreum beneath it was likened to the puppy attached to the mother dog.

In this interpretation, the terrain where the mother dog and puppy are paired symbolized a dog’s breast, and the northwest slope was regarded as an auspicious site. However, this is a feng shui tradition explaining the origin of the place name, not a term for the geological formation process. In map searches, it is easier to find it by entering both ‘Gasaegi Oreum’ and ‘Gasa Oreum.’

A 500 m farm road behind Yeonmi-ro, and about 10 minutes to the summit

Local heritage materials explain that after entering Yeonmi Village from the side of Yeonsam-ro, you follow Yeonmi-ro toward Jeju Jungang Middle School for about 500 m, and after passing the right-side field you reach the foot of the oreum. From that foot to the summit, the guide indicates about 10 minutes.

Because this is a point-based natural landform without a road-name address, it is better to enter both ‘Gasaegi Oreum’ and ‘2848 Ora 3-dong, Jeju-si’ into the navigation system. Gasaegi Oreum is located northwest of Yeonmi Village in Ora-dong, east of the Jeju MBC building. After the surrounding greenbelt was lifted in 1999 and nearby buildings were constructed, a landscape formed in which the small ridge of the oreum and Jeju City's new urban district meet closely.

For that reason, this place is closer to a site for reading small volcanic terrain remaining near the city than to the long trekking routes of the mid-mountain area of Halla Mountain. Since red pine forest, grave areas, roads, and residential districts can overlap in one frame, it is easier to understand if you look at it together with the context of an oreum remaining amid Jeju City's urban expansion rather than expecting only natural scenery.

Gasaegi Oreum is a natural landform, not a tourist facility with a ticket booth or reservation desk. In the official and tourism guide materials that could be confirmed, no separate operating hours, regular closing day, or admission fee were indicated, and admission is listed as free. Therefore, after sunset do not expect lighting or safety facilities, and it is safer to move during daylight hours from sunrise until before sunset.

Combine it with Sammu Park, 1.27 km away, but keep the stroll separate in character

According to tourism information, Sammu Park is introduced as being about 1.27 km from Gasaegi Oreum, and Woljeongsa is about 1.65 km away. Since Gasaegi Oreum itself is a short oreum requiring about 10 minutes to the summit, it is efficient to allocate 30 to 50 minutes in the morning or around sunset and connect it with meals or cafe plans in Jeju City's new urban district.

Nearby restaurant information lists Mekong Sky at about 0.21 km, Moise Haejangguk at about 0.53 km, and Aebbangi Sikdang at about 0.55 km.
