Geumgang Park Cable Car, Ascending to the 540 m Ridge of Geumjeongsan on a Route Dating to 1966

Opened in September 1966, Geumgang Park Cable Car is a 1,260 m double-track ropeway that operates for approximately six minutes from Geumgang Park in Dongnae-gu, Busan, to a ridge of Geumjeongsan at an elevation of 540 m. Since the final departure varies by season and day of the week and the cable car is closed every Monday, it is advisable to confirm by phone whether it is operating before setting out.

1,260 m opened in September 1966 as transport for the Geumjeongsan South Gate recreation complex

The Geumgang Park Cable Car is a double-track ropeway that opened in September 1966. Its 1,260 m route runs from Geumgang Park to the 540 m-high ridge of Geumjeongsan, and a one-way journey takes about 6 minutes. It was initially installed as transportation for a comprehensive recreation complex planned near the South Gate of Geumjeongsanseong Fortress, and operation was transferred to the private sector in 1972.

The name Geumgang Park comes from “Sogeumgang,” meaning that the mountain landscape of Geumjeongsan resembles that of Geumgangsan. The park itself covers 3,093,953㎡, and before or after riding the cable car, visitors can also explore the Busan Marine Natural History Museum, Busan Folk Art Center, Geumgang Botanical Garden, and cultural heritage sites in the Dongnae area.

Weekdays from 09:30 to 17:30 between March and October, and why you cannot board on Mondays

According to the current information, weekday service from March to October runs from 09:30 to 17:30, while weekends run from 09:30 to 18:00. In November, the hours change to 10:00–17:30 on weekdays and 09:30–17:30 on weekends; from December to February, they are 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 09:30–17:30 on weekends. Before buying a ticket, it is best to ask on site again about the latest possible boarding times for both the uphill and downhill directions.

The regular closing day is every Monday. If Monday is a public holiday or substitute holiday, the closing day moves to the following day. Since operating hours may change depending on weather conditions such as strong winds, rain, or lightning, call 051-552-1761 on the day of your visit to confirm whether service is operating.

  • Weekends, March–October: 09:30–18:00

₩11,000 round trip and ₩7,000 one way: choose your ticket after deciding how you will descend

Adult and youth fares are ₩11,000 round trip and ₩7,000 one way. Children aged 4 and above through elementary school pay ₩8,000 round trip and ₩5,000 one way, while seniors eligible for the senior discount and people with disability grades 1–3 pay ₩9,000 round trip and ₩6,000 one way. The official information states that there is no group fare.

A round-trip ticket is suitable for taking in a short view near Sanjeong Rest Area and returning along the same route, while a one-way ticket is suitable if you plan to continue hiking along the Geumjeongsan ridge. However, for first-time visitors who have not decided on a descent route, a round-trip ticket is simpler than a one-way uphill ticket. The cable car is not a substitute for hiking equipment but a means of reducing the approach to the ridge, so prepare nonslip shoes and water if you plan to continue along mountain trails.

From Oncheonjang Station to the entrance of Geumgang Park: distinguishing address number 155 from the address of Chilseongam

The management address listed in the cable car’s official information is 155 Ujangchun-ro, Dongnae-gu, Busan (Oncheon-dong), while Chilseongam’s address within the park area is separately listed as 175-146 Ujangchun-ro. For taxis or map apps, entering “Geumgang Park Cable Car” or “Geumgang Park Ropeway” as the destination is more accurate for reaching the departure station.

Oncheonjang Station on Busan Metro Line 1 is the nearest rail access point. After traveling from the station toward the park, reaching the cable car ticket office and boarding platform involves an uphill route and walking inside the park, so those with a lot of luggage or limited mobility may find it better to take a taxi from the station. The official page does not separately specify the level of wheelchair or stroller boarding assistance or foreign-language information, so contact 051-552-1761 before departure if needed.

  • Park management address: 155 Ujangchun-ro, Dongnae-gu, Busan
  • Nearby address for checking coordinates: Chilseongam, 175-146 Ujangchun-ro, Dongnae-gu, Busan
  • Park representative office: 051-860-7880

After getting off at 540 m above sea level, do not treat “viewseeing” and “hiking” as the same itinerary

The upper station reaches the Geumjeongsan ridge at an elevation of 540 m. If you only use the cable car, the round-trip travel time is about 12 minutes, but allowing at least 40 minutes to 1 hour is more realistic once ticket purchase, waiting, and time spent viewing the scenery from the upper station are included. If you plan to walk farther toward Geumjeongsanseong Fortress along the ridge, work backward from the schedule so that your descent does not take place after the cable car’s closing time.

This is not a facility that travels over the sea like a coastal cable car, but a mountain ropeway connecting downtown Dongnae with the slopes of Geumjeongsan. Therefore, the route differs for people making a short trip to view Busan’s urban area and those looking for an entry point to hike toward Geumjeongsanseong Fortress and the ridge. If you have no hiking plans, the safest option is a round-trip route returning from around the upper station; if you do plan to hike, it is best to download a paper map or offline map in advance.

A three-hour Dongnae-gu itinerary combining the Marine Natural History Museum and Folk Art Center

Geumgang Park contains the Busan Marine Natural History Museum and the Busan Folk Art Center. According to information from the Busan Infrastructure Corporation, the Marine Natural History Museum exhibits more than 20,000 items, including rare and large species and natural monuments from approximately 100 countries around the world. Rather than ending your itinerary with only a cable car ride, set aside time to visit the museum and combine it with walking around the park to reduce wasted travel time.

The Imjin Dongnae Martyrs’ Shrine is the resting place of the remains of soldiers, officials, and civilians who died defending Dongnae Fortress during the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592; it is Busan Monument No. 13. Dokjindaeamun Gate also remains as one of the park’s main facilities. Adding these historic sites before or after your cable car ride allows you to understand not only the scenery of Geumjeongsan but also Dongnae’s historical role as a military and administrative center.

  • Cable car round trip and upper-station views: approximately 40–60 minutes
  • Including cultural facilities inside the park: approximately 2–3 hours
  • Combined with a Geumjeongsan ridge hike: check the descent route and last car first

Why the 2026 maintenance notice shows the need to reconfirm on the day of departure

A notice about the 2026 scheduled maintenance closure of the cable car has been posted on the Busan Infrastructure Corporation’s Geumgang Park announcements page. Scheduled maintenance and weather-related restrictions may occur separately from the seasonal timetable, so once your travel date is set, it is best to check both the official notices and the telephone information line.

The official website for the Geumgang Park Cable Car is the Busan Infrastructure Corporation’s Geumgang Park page. Whether online advance reservations are available is not separately stated in the official operating information, so the appropriate approach is to confirm the details before visiting on the assumption that on-site operations, closures, and fares may change. In particular, it is safer to leave room to replace the itinerary on Mondays, winter weekdays, and days when strong winds are forecast.
