Why Haenyeo Remain in Yeongdo: 151 People and Two Fishing Villages in 2016
The essence of the village is not its sea views but the diving-fishing community that has made the waters off Yeongdo its livelihood. According to reports based on figures from the end of 2016, Yeongdo-gu had 151 haenyeo, divided between the Namhang-dong Fishing Village Association with 58 members and the Dongsam-dong Fishing Village Association with 93. Excluding Gijang-gun, Yeongdo was mentioned as the area in Busan with the largest haenyeo population.
In good weather, these haenyeo went out early in the morning to dive and worked for about four hours, then sold their catch at roadside stalls or supplied it to Jagalchi Market and restaurants. The current exhibition hall operates as a space introducing the work tools and life history of Yeongdo’s haenyeo, whose tradition is gradually disappearing. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, the second-floor exhibition room is closed on Mondays, January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, and the day of Chuseok, while the first-floor haenyeo seafood stall is listed as open year-round. Because temporary closures or changes due to marine weather are possible, calling 051-419-4505 again on the day of departure is the most accurate option.

Example prices listed in the Korea Tourism Organization guide are 10,000 won for sea squirt, 20,000 won for spiny sea squirt, 20,000 won for turban shell, 20,000 won for sea cucumber, and 10,000 won for whelk. Recently registered menu information also shows seafood ramen at 10,000 won and wild abalone at 30,000 won for a small serving and 50,000 won for a large serving. These are not guaranteed permanent prices, so use the price list in front of the tanks as the standard before ordering, and choose assorted or individual items according to the number of people, season, and the day’s catch.

From Exit 8 of Nampo Station on Busan Metro Line 1, walk to the Yeongdodaegyo–Nampo Station bus stop, then take bus 6, 7, 71, or 508 and get off at Namgo High School bus stop. According to the Busan Tourism Portal, it takes about seven minutes on foot from the stop to the Yeongdo Haenyeo Culture Exhibition Hall.
After getting off the bus, you need to continue toward the exhibition hall rather than stopping at the road in front of the building. It is therefore better to set “Yeongdo Haenyeo Culture Exhibition Hall” or “2-35 Jungnigam-ro” as your destination in a map app. The hall is near Busan Nam High School and Busan Physical Education High School, so you can also check bus routes passing these two schools.
