Unsucheon 800m, Changed to 2.4 Billion KRW Since 2015
Baekyangsan Wellbeing Forest is an experiential forest trail created in the Unsucheon Valley area of Mora-dong 1243-4, Sasang-gu, Busan Metropolitan City, at Baekyangsan. Sasang-gu carried out the development project from January 2015 with a total budget of 2.4 billion KRW, placing rest, play, and forest-bathing spaces along about an 800m stretch from the entrance to Unsucheon following the valley.
The initial first phase was developed around a 500m valley section on a site of about 25,000 square meters. At that time, 1.2 billion KRW in national and city funds was invested, and a second phase connecting the upstream 300m section and the surrounding area was planned afterward. Therefore, this place is less a natural hiking trail than a forest-based public space created by improving the environment around Unsucheon so that everyday walking is possible.
Routes Split Between the 210m Deck Road and the Hinoki Forest Meditation Trail
Near the entrance, you first encounter a multi-purpose deck rest area and a valley observatory along the Unsucheon waterway. The deck road beside the valley was built to be 210m long, designed so that you can enjoy the sound of water and the shade of the forest within a short distance.
After passing the deck, the route continues to the Hinoki Forest prenatal education and meditation grove, the Hinoki family rest area, the maple tree forest trail, and the family story forest. Sasang-gu materials state that 22 species, including peacock maple, and about 20,000 trees and flowers were planted, so if you want to see autumn foliage and fruit changes rather than the leaf colors of spring and summer, it is better to walk the valley section together with the maple forest.
- For a light visit: about 40 to 60 minutes centered on the deck rest area, valley observatory, and Hinoki grove
- With children: about 1 hour and 30 minutes including the forest-themed playground and nature play forest
- When continuing to the Baekyangsan hike: treat the Wellbeing Forest as a low-elevation section before and after the hike and prepare water and hiking shoes
Families Looking for 12 Types of Facilities Such as the Forest Play House and Tree House
The forest-themed playground was introduced in a Sasang-gu newsletter as having 12 play facilities installed, including a forest play house, stepping stones, and a tree house. The nature play forest has a forest slide, and animal sculptures such as snails and squirrels, along with exercise equipment, are placed nearby.
However, this is a mountain area where slopes and unpaved sections are mixed along the valley. Since it is difficult to find official confirmation that the entire route can be continuously traveled by stroller or wheelchair, it is safer to decide based on the walking condition of the accompanying person even if you plan to use only the deck and the entrance area. Summer visit reviews mention mosquitoes, insects, and walking inconvenience in some sections.
Rather than visiting only for the children's facilities, it is better to plan a round-trip route that uses the slide and stepping stones before returning along the valley path. Avoid going down to the valley rocks or waterside, and be especially careful about slippery deck and dirt paths after rain.
How to Enter Unsucheon from Mora Station Exit 3 and Bus 338
The official tourism guide suggests taking a taxi from Exit 3 of Mora Station on Busan Metro Line 2. Since no station exit is confirmed as directly connected on foot, if you have luggage or are traveling with children, you may want to set your destination at Mora Station to "Unsucheon Public Parking Lot" or "Unsusa Entrance" and take a taxi.
If you are using the bus, Sasang-gu SNS supporters' reviews introduce taking bus 338 and getting off at "Unsusa Entrance." After getting off, there is still an uphill walk to the forest entrance, so you should not expect the facility to be right in front of the bus stop. It is best to recheck the bus interval and stop location on the Busan Bus Information System on the day of departure.
- Subway: Take a taxi after exiting Mora Station, Exit 3, on Busan Metro Line 2
- Bus: Bus 338, get off at Unsusa Entrance, then walk
- Car: Information is provided for using Unsucheon Public Parking Lot, and cases of free use are introduced in the Sasang-gu newsletter
- Address reference: 1243-4 Mora-dong, Sasang-gu, Busan Metropolitan City
A Forest Trail Open All Year and Free, With Why You Should Leave Before Sunset
According to the Busan Tourism Organization Visit Busan guide, Baekyangsan Wellbeing Forest is open every day all year round, has no regular closing day, and admission is free. No separate reservation or ticketing process is mentioned, so you can start walking freely. The official tourism information page can be found on the Visit Busan website.
However, "open all year" does not mean that nighttime lighting or safety management is guaranteed. Since it may be difficult to find your way after sunset in the valley and forest trail, it is better to finish your walk while there is still enough daylight and to prepare your phone battery and water. Inquiries about management can be made to the Sasang-gu Greenery and Parks Division at 051-310-4542.
- Operating hours: daily, all year
- Closed: open year-round
- Admission fee: free
- Inquiry: Sasang-gu Greenery and Parks Division 051-310-4542
- Recommended stay: 40 to 60 minutes for the forest trail only, 1 to 1 hour 30 minutes including the playground
The Background of the Mora-dong Foothills Created by 642m Baekyangsan and Unsusa
Baekyangsan is a mountain with an elevation of 642m that spans Busanjin-gu, Sasang-gu, and Buk-gu. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was known by different names depending on the area, such as Seonamsan, Unsusan, and Geumyongsan, and today the Wellbeing Forest on the Mora-dong side is an example of turning the Unsucheon Valley on its foothills into an everyday walking space.
Unsusa, which is close to the Wellbeing Forest, is a reference point for understanding the geography and cultural route of this area. Sasang-gu's village commentary program once operated a course that visited Unsusa Daeungjeon Hall and the stupas together with Baekyangsan Wellbeing Forest. If you plan to see the temple grounds together after a forest walk, you must respect the etiquette of the religious facility and the areas open to visitors on site.
If your goal is to hike to the summit of Baekyangsan, the deck and play areas of the Wellbeing Forest do not replace the entire hike. The route to the summit is a separate hike that requires hiking gear and physical stamina, and visitors who only use the valley forest trail will find it more realistic to return from the lower section.
