An Emerald-Blue Summer Night in Samcheok When the Beach Becomes a Three-Day Concert Venue

As you head down along the east coast of Gangwon-do, you come across Samcheok Beach. This white sandy beach transforms into a stage, food zone, and photo zone for three full midsummer days at the Samcheok Beach Sum Festival. This year, it will be held from July 24 to 26 around Samcheok Beach. By day, you can play in the sea, and when the sun sets, people gather in front of the special stage to watch live performances, so even if you do not follow the program closely, simply walking along the beach puts you in a good mood.

The lineup changes color every day. On the first day, the 24th, soulful vocalist Jung In opens the stage; on the 25th, the rock band YB heats up the beach with explosive energy; and on the final day, the 26th, the reggae icons Skull & Haha bring the festival to a grand finale. Since it goes from ballads to rock and ends with reggae, even if you go for just one day, each day has its own distinct character, which is part of the festival's charm.

The 25th Night Is the Highlight — Fireworks Drone Show

If I had to choose just one day to visit this festival, I would pick the 25th. That night, hundreds of drones rise into the Samcheok night sky for a drone show that moves together with fireworks. The moment the images created by the drones overlap with the bursting fireworks is the true highlight of the festival. For reference, the Samcheok drone show has long been a large-scale event; in 2023, 700 drones decorated the night sky over two days, showing just how strongly this region has invested in the content.

Because the drone show is launched into the sky with the sea behind it, the view is open no matter where you sit on the sand. However, about 30 minutes to an hour before it starts, the area near the front of the beach is already packed. If it were me, I would lay out a picnic mat or beach towel in advance, stay put while enjoying the performances, and then watch the drone show from the same spot.

A Foreign Traveler's Day — From Arrival to Heading Back

The first thing to know is that this festival is a free, open beach event. The stage performances and drone show can be seen without a ticket, so there is no need to worry about advance reservations. However, good spots are first come, first served, so in the evening when popular singers perform, arriving early is basically the same as making a reservation. Some experiences, such as the water-gun battle, do have a participation fee; in past festivals, that fee was fully refunded through a cashback-style system in the form of Samcheok Love Gift Certificates.

It is best to be mentally prepared for transportation in advance. Samcheok is not directly served by KTX, so if you are coming from Seoul, the practical way is usually to take KTX to Donghae Station and then transfer by taxi or city bus to Samcheok Beach, or to take an intercity or express bus to Samcheok Intercity Bus Terminal and transfer there. Be sure to check the detailed schedule and last departures before traveling. Since it is a night event, taxis may be hard to find late at night after the drone show ends, so staying at accommodation near Samcheok Beach and walking back is the most comfortable option.

You do not need to worry about food on site. More than 10 food booths are set up across the venue, and in previous years a night market and food trucks operated late into the night, filling the area with families and couples. Many booths accept cards or mobile payments, but some small stalls only take cash, so bringing a little cash will help you avoid inconvenience.

Practical Tips That Help If You Know Them in Advance

This is not an international event with robust English guidance. Most stage announcements and booth signs are in Korean, so it may be difficult to understand detailed program explanations in real time. But experiences like the water-gun battle, jumping machine, the drone show, and the concert can still be enjoyed fully through the atmosphere even if you do not know the language, so it is the kind of festival you can simply follow along with.

  • Clothing: Swimwear, a change of clothes, and a beach towel for daytime water play; one light outer layer for the sea breeze at night
  • What to bring: Picnic mat, small amount of cash, mobile battery, sunscreen, comfortable shoes (for the sand)
  • Timing: Seats near the front fill up quickly before popular singers and the drone show, so get there early in the evening
  • Heading back: Expect heavy traffic after the drone show ends — accommodation near the beach is recommended

This festival is a great fit for couples or friends who want to enjoy the summer sea, live performances, and a nighttime drone show all at once. Rather than expecting a flashy ticketing system or English guidance, think of it as a chance to sit on the sand and enjoy the sound of the waves together with the music, and Samcheok's summer night will stay in your memory for a long time.
