How to Travel by Bus from Samcheok Terminal to Maengbang Beach
Visitors from outside the area can depart from Samcheok Terminal. Take city buses 20, 30, 30-1, 30-2, 70, 80, 90, or 90-1 toward Maengbang Beach, get off at Geundeok Nonghyup Bus Stop or the Agricultural Technology Center, and walk to the beach. Official guidance only states that visitors should walk after getting off the bus; walking distance and the latest service intervals are not provided.
For the return trip, you can take bus 20 or 30 toward Samcheok from Geundeok Nonghyup Bus Stop. Since departure information from the train station and station exit numbers could not be confirmed, travelers arriving in Samcheok for the first time will find it clearer to use Samcheok Terminal as their reference point.
Hamaengbang-ri 12-1: What Area Is Actually Maengbang Beach?
Public tourism materials list the location as 12-1 Hamaengbang-ri, Geundeok-myeon, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do. The address is also provided as the area around 228-239 Maengbanghaebyeon-ro, Geundeok-myeon, Samcheok-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. The beach is about 8 km south of downtown Samcheok.
Size specifications vary by source. Badaon introduces the sandy beach as 6 km long, while the Coastal Portal of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries describes it as 4 km long. A 2024 notice from Samcheok City lists the managed sandy beach section as 550 m long, 80 m wide, and 30,000㎡ in area. The entire coastline and the managed beach-opening section should therefore be understood separately.
Swimming Hours from 09:00 to 18:00 and the 2025 Opening Period
The 2025 beach operating period was July 9 to August 17, and the operating and swimming hours were listed as 09:00–18:00. However, the official operating period and hours for 2026 have not been confirmed. A 2024 notice from Samcheok City distinguished beach opening hours of 06:00–24:00 from swimming hours of 09:00–18:00.
The 2024 opening period lasted 40 days, from July 10 to August 18. Therefore, official swimming hours do not apply outside the beach-opening period, and fees for the beach itself or for showers and parasols could not be confirmed. As of 2024, the facilities included three restrooms and three shower rooms, along with a parking lot, a small convenience store, and restaurants.
Pine Forest Behind Shallow Waters, with Deokbongsan at the Far Right
Maengbang Beach is introduced as a gently sloping beach with shallow water. Because of its fine sand, it has long been known by the nickname “Myeongsasip-ri,” meaning “ten ri of famous sand.” A pine forest extends behind the beach for roughly its entire length, allowing visitors to see the sandy shore and shaded forest along one route.
Deokbongsan appears like an island at the seaside on the far right end of the beach. Maeupcheon Stream flows in front of Deokbongsan; it is also called Dongmakcheon Stream and is known as a sweetfish fishing spot. The outer beach area is introduced as a section for surf casting from the sandy shore, while the rocky shore around the southern end of Deokbongsan is also described as a fishing point.
A 120-Minute Coastal Route from the Seongbuk-gu Retreat Center in Seoul to Deoksan Port
Maengbang Beach Road is an easy 6.5 km course with an official estimated duration of 120 minutes. The route runs 2.6 km from the Seongbuk-gu Retreat Center in Seoul Metropolitan City to Hamaengbang Beach, 1.8 km to Deokbong Bridge, and 2.1 km to Deoksan Port. It is suitable for people who want to walk beyond the beach itself and continue to Deokbongsan and Deoksan Port.
A total of six restrooms are listed near Sangmaengbang Beach, Maengbang Beach, Deokbongsan, Deoksan Beach, and Deoksan Port. However, there is no separate pedestrian path on the section from Deoksan Beach to Deoksan Port, and the uphill road has no shoulder, so pedestrians should exercise caution.
The Season When the Film Location and Maengbang Cherry Blossom Road Overlap
Maengbang Beach is known as the location where the scene in the film <One Fine Spring Day> was shot in which Sang-woo and Eun-su record the sound of waves at the beach. Even if you are looking for the film location, there is no filming set or separate indoor exhibition; the beach is an outdoor space.
Maengbang Cherry Blossom Road extends about 4 km from the beach entrance to Samcheok Electronic Technical High School in Gyogari. The roadside trees are said to be about 20 years old, and the cherry blossoms generally reach full bloom around April 15. However, petals can fall quickly after storms along the coast, so the viewing period may be short. A bare-handed trout-catching event may also be held during the annual beach-opening period.
Distances When Combining Deoksan Beach and Chodang Reservoir
Deoksan Beach, located across Deokbongsan from Maengbang Beach, is 1.0 km away and is introduced as a place where visitors can learn marine leisure sports such as windsurfing. Deoksan Port is 2.6 km away, Hamaengbang Beach is 0.2 km away, and Bunam Beach is 3.8 km away.
Inland, Chodang Reservoir is about 2 km from the beach. It is introduced as a fishing spot for crucian carp, carp, and trout. The site of the Samcheok Maengbang Canola Flower Festival is listed as 3.6 km away, but whether the festival will be held and its schedule must be confirmed through a separate notice at the time of your visit.
Things to Know Before Visiting with Strollers, Wheelchairs, or Pets
The Korea Tourism Organization’s VisitKorea information states that there is no accessible restroom or wheelchair rental service and that the main entrance has a step. Badaon also indicates that stroller rental is unavailable, so visitors with infants should bring their own stroller.
Pet access is listed as unavailable. Badaon also states that credit cards cannot be used, so carrying cash is advisable even though no entrance fee for the beach itself has currently been confirmed. Information on photography restrictions, English-language guidance, audio guides, and the latest shower-room and parasol fees could not be found in public materials.
