Gongsanseong, Baekje’s royal fortress overlooking the Geumgang River: a 2.6 km walk
Gongsanseong was the royal fortress used when Baekje made Ungjin (Gongju) its capital from 475 to 538 after losing its capital at Hanseong. Starting at Geumseoru Gate and continuing toward Ssangsujeong Pavilion, Imnyugak Pavilion, and the lotus pond, this route takes about two hours and offers views of both the Geumgang River and Gongju’s old city center.

A Fortress Along the Geumgang Chosen as the Ungjin Royal Capital After the Fall of Hanseong, 475–538
Gongsanseong is the royal fortress from the period when Baekje made Ungjin, present-day Gongju, its capital from 475 to 538 after losing Hanseong to Goguryeo. Its location on hills beside the Geumgang reflects consideration of both transportation along the river and defense, while within the fortress remain areas believed to have been part of the royal palace site and the ruins of a pond.
One of the eight components of the Baekje Historic Areas, the fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. The official Gongju guide explains that the rammed-earth wall-building techniques and the site of pillar-wall buildings provide insight into Baekje civil engineering and architectural technology amid exchanges with ancient China and Japan.
From Geumseoru to Ssangsujeong: A Sightseeing Route Beginning at the Royal Fortress’s West Gate
For first-time visitors, it is easy to follow the route that enters through Geumseoru, the west gate, and climbs toward the interior of the fortress. Gongju’s Royal Capital Mission Tour also presents the major sites in sequence—Baekje Royal Palace Site, Geumseoru, Ssangsujeong, the Gongsanseong photo zone, and Imnyugak—linking them together.
After passing through Geumseoru, changes in elevation and sections of stairs continue along the fortress wall. It is best to wear athletic shoes that support the ankles, and a plan to circle the entire fortress with a stroller or mobility aid is unsuitable because of the slopes and stairs. Compared with the area around the entrance, shade is limited along the wall ridgeline, so carrying water and sun protection is advisable in summer.
Ssangsujeong, Where King Injo Stayed in 1624, and Imnyugak, Said to Be the Site of King Dongsong’s Banquets
Ssangsujeong is known as the place where King Injo stayed for six days during Yi Gwal’s Rebellion in 1624. Its name is connected with the anecdote that, after staying there, King Injo granted two zelkova trees official rank equivalent to the third junior court rank. It is a site where a layer of Joseon-period history was added atop Baekje’s royal fortress.
Imnyugak is introduced as a building presumed to have been a banquet venue during the reign of Baekje King Dongsong. Visiting the two sites together helps reveal that Gongsanseong was not merely a defensive facility for the Baekje royal palace, but also continued to serve as a stage for administration, refuge, and religion through the Goryeo and Joseon periods.
The Geumgang Seen from the Northern Pond and Manharu: A Slow Section of the 2.6 km Fortress Wall
The walls of Gongsanseong are known to extend for approximately 2.6 km, and a realistic estimate for walking the entire route is about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. Including photography, reading the information boards, and visiting the royal palace site and pond inside the fortress may take more than two hours.
Heading north, visitors will find the pond and Manharu between the Geumgang and Yeoungeunsa Temple. From atop the walls, the Geumgang Bridge and Gongju urban area are visible below. Visitor reviews repeatedly mention a mixture of broad, gentle paths and narrow, steep paths. If high places and long stairways are a concern, it is better to focus your time on the area around Geumseoru and the flatter ruins inside the fortress.
18:00 from March to October and 17:00 from November to February: Observe the Ticketing Deadline 30 Minutes Before Closing
Visiting hours are 09:00–18:00 from March through October and 09:00–17:00 from November through February, with admission ending 30 minutes before closing. The closed days are January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, and Chuseok Day. Because daylight is shorter from November to February and admission is not possible after 16:30, visitors planning to walk the entire fortress are advised to enter no later than around 15:00.
Admission costs 3,000 won for adults, 2,000 won for youths and military personnel, and 1,000 won for children. It is advisable to reconfirm seasonal events and any maintenance work affecting parts of the fortress by phone before departure.
How to Get There via Bus 125 from Gongju Express Bus Terminal and the Geumseong-dong 17-1 Parking Lot
By public transportation, take Bus 125 from a stop near Gongju Express Bus Terminal, get off at the Gongsanseong stop, and walk for about five minutes. The journey from the terminal to Gongsanseong is listed as taking approximately 15 minutes, and it is best to check the city bus timetable on Gongju’s bus information service before departure.
Visitors arriving by car can use the dedicated Gongsanseong parking lot. The parking area around 17-1 Geumseong-dong, Gongju, has 76 spaces and was renovated in 2018. Parking is listed as free, but it can fill up on weekends and during festivals, so arriving early is advantageous. The road-name address is 280 Ungjin-ro, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, and the parcel-based location provided is 53-51 Geumseong-dong.
A Half-Day Combining Sanseong Market Behind Gongsanseong with the Tomb of King Muryeong and the Royal Tombs
Rather than ending the visit at Gongsanseong, combining it with Gongju Sanseong Market and the Tomb of King Muryeong and Royal Tombs makes the spatial layout of the Ungjin royal capital clearer. The Korea Tourism Organization suggests a day itinerary linking Gongsanseong, the Goma Train, the Tomb of King Muryeong and Royal Tombs, and the Chungcheongnam-do History Museum.
Gongju Sanseong Market was established in 1937 and is located below the walls of Gongsanseong. If you plan to eat after walking around the fortress, check business hours separately because they vary by store. If continuing to the Royal Tombs, allow at least half a day, including travel time by Gongju city bus or taxi.
