K-pop and fireworks at the center of the field — why Dive is special

I first learned about the Chungju Dive Festival from a single line: “A local festival where the Air Force Black Eagles cut across the sky?” When I actually visited, I realized the heart of this festival is the field itself. The 15,000-seat rectangular main stadium is used like a concert venue, while the lawn and plaza are filled with hands-on activities, food, and exhibits. In the daytime, families can enjoy water play and experiences; after sunset, the mood transforms completely with K-pop and hip-hop stages plus drone and fireworks shows, so there’s never a dull moment even if you spend the whole day there.

Hosted by Chungju City and organized by the Chungju Cultural Tourism Foundation, the festival is held every June for four days around the Chungju Sports Complex. In 2026, it will take place under the name “2026 Chungju Dive Festival with MyK FESTA” from Thursday, June 11 to Sunday, June 14. As it was selected as a municipal event linked to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s large-scale Hallyu integrated event, the festival’s Hallyu content has become even richer. The theme remains: “Gather in Chungju, Dive in!”

Idols, hip-hop, and ballet all in one place — lineup and programs

The biggest pride of this festival is that it can’t be defined by a single genre. As of 2026, on the opening day, the 11th, the Black Eagles air show opens the sky, and powerhouse singers such as Ali, Cha Ji-yeon, Son Tae-jin, and Park Seo-jin fill the opening celebration stage. At night, the K-HIPHOP stage features BewhY, Kim Hyo-eun, Big Naughty, and Ash Island, while on Saturday the K-pop idol stage with STAYC, OH MY GIRL, and SAY MY NAME turns the stadium into a sea of singalongs.

It’s not just music. There’s also “DIVE Masterpiece,” which combines a classical ballet gala and a traditional Korean music performance; the “AI Family Film Festival,” held on the auxiliary stadium lawn from 10 p.m. to midnight; “DIVE Street Dance,” where dance crews from across the country perform on the street stage; a mascot show featuring mascots from 15 local governments; and university cheer squads. A “K-Festa Street” where you can directly experience K-fashion, K-beauty, and K-voice adds even more layers, making it both a festival to watch and a festival to try.

The finale is decorated every night with drone light shows and musical fireworks. When the drone show and fireworks were held ahead of the 2025 closing, more than 30,000 people gathered at the stadium, so if you want a good spot, I recommend arriving early before the evening stage begins.

A foreign traveler’s day — how to get there and how to enjoy it

First, the good news: admission is free. There’s no separate reservation required, so you can just head in on site without worrying about tickets selling out.

Getting to Chungju is usually done by taking the KTX-Eum from Seoul to Chungju Station or by intercity/express bus to the Chungju Intercity Bus Terminal. The issue comes next: Chungju Sports Complex, the festival venue, is on the outskirts of the Hoam district, so public transportation is a bit inconvenient. That’s why during the festival, free shuttle buses run continuously between Chungju Station, the terminal, the indoor gymnasium, and the Seochungju area. If you’re driving, there’s plenty of free parking at the stadium and EV charging stations too, so if you’re with a group, a rental car is also a good option.

English guidance or interpretation on site is not exactly plentiful. However, stage performances, drone shows, and experience zones are easy to enjoy with your eyes and ears alone, even if you don’t know the language, so it’s not a major barrier. There are food booths, chicken-and-beer zones, flea markets, and food trucks throughout the venue, so meals and snacks are not a problem, and because the stadium’s existing infrastructure such as seating and restrooms is used as-is, the toilets and rest areas are generally clean and sufficient. Payment methods can vary by booth, so bringing some small cash makes things easier.

After the night performances and the fireworks/drone show end, getting back becomes the main concern. The shuttle buses have fixed last-departure times, so if you plan to watch until the final performance, check the last shuttle time in advance or stay overnight in downtown Chungju. Chungju has sights such as Tangeumdae, Jungang Tower, and Suanbo Hot Springs, so combining a festival day with local sightseeing the next day makes for an efficient itinerary.

Practical tips to know before you go

• Since it’s an outdoor event in June, the midday sun is strong. A hat, sunscreen, and water are essential, and sneakers are more comfortable because you’ll walk a lot on the lawn and around the stadium.
• It gets cooler in the evening, and if you plan to stay for the late-night film festival, you’ll be seated for a long time, so a light outer layer or picnic mat is helpful.
• The crowds are heaviest right before the popular singer stages and the drone/fireworks show. If you want a good spot, enter about an hour before the performance.
• During the festival period, there is a “Chungju Travel Half-Price Sale” program that returns part of your travel expenses as a local gift certificate when you present a receipt of spending in the Chungju area. Refund conditions and limits change every year, so check the official channels.
• The day-of performance schedule and the last shuttle bus time may change, so be sure to check the official page before visiting.
