Why Taekkyeonwon Was Built Inside Hoamji Ecological Park
Chungju Taekkyeonwon is a space dedicated to the transmission of Taekkyeon, located within Hoamji Ecological Park. It was established to transmit and preserve Taekkyeon, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, present creative Taekkyeon demonstrations, and promote Taekkyeon. Taekkyeon was the first martial art to be designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The building follows a traditional Korean hanok style and contains a spacious training hall. Serving as a hub for Taekkyeon practitioners nationwide, it offers regular training and educational programs, as well as related events including Taekkyeon competitions. Therefore, this facility is closer to a venue whose appearance and activities vary according to training, educational, and performance schedules than to a museum with fixed exhibition rooms.

Scale from the 1995 Groundbreaking to the 1997 Opening
The Taekkyeonwon construction project ran from May 9, 1995, to December 16, 1996, and opened on May 31, 1997. The project cost 2.18 billion won. The site area is 6,840㎥, and the building area is 961.3㎥. The building consists of one basement level and one above-ground level.
The operating organization also changed. From May 1997 to February 2008, it was operated under contract by the Korea Traditional Taekkyeon Association, while Chungju City has operated it since April 1, 2008. The Chungju Municipal Taekkyeon Troupe was founded in April 2011 and developed and distributed diabetes Taekkyeon gymnastics in May 2016.

Where Is the Chungju Municipal Taekkyeon Troupe’s ‘Old Taekkyeon Match’ Held?
The regular performance ‘Old Taekkyeon Match’ began in March 2018. In the first half of 2026, the Saturday regular performances will be held at Jungangtap Park rather than at Chungju Taekkyeonwon itself. The dates are March 21, April 4, April 18, and May 2, 2026. Performances take place every other Saturday, with each session starting at 15:00.
The full performance program includes 30 minutes of ‘Old Taekkyeon Match,’ 10 minutes of a street procession and entrance, 5 minutes of a group dance performance by the Chungju Municipal Taekkyeon Troupe, and 5 minutes of Taekkyeon participation for visitors. In other words, visiting Taekkyeonwon does not automatically allow you to see a 2026 performance; on the relevant dates, you must travel to Jungangtap Park. No information on the second-half schedule has been published.

Beginners Start with Solo Practice
The Taekkyeon training system is divided into solo practice, partner practice, and sparring. In solo practice, students learn basic postures and footwork, hwalgaetjit movements using the shoulders and arms, baljil foot techniques, and forward-moving movements. Partner practice is the process of exchanging attacks and defenses with another person.
In 2026, Chungju Citizens’ Taekkyeon School is being operated for Chungju residents aged 17 and over, with a participation fee of 50,000 won. The introductory class was announced as having 40 places, and the comprehensive class 30 places. The recruitment periods were February 23 to March 13, 2026, for the introductory class, and March 3 to March 28, 2026, for the sparring class. Therefore, foreign travelers should not regard the citizens’ school as a same-day experience program.
Tourist Experiences: Check the Requirement for Groups of 10 First
General admission is listed as free. However, past materials introduced the tourist experience program as available for group reservations of 10 or more, at a cost of 5,000 won per person. Since this condition is based on search materials from 2022, you should confirm current operation and pricing by calling 043-850-7304.
Because operating hours and closing days vary by program, no fixed daily visiting hours or regular weekly closing day have been announced. The 2026 Chungju Citizens’ Taekkyeon School class hours posted on the official website are Monday through Friday, 19:30–20:30, but these are class hours for the citizens’ school and do not indicate visiting hours for general tourists. The available areas within the training hall, whether photography is permitted, and whether English guidance or an audio guide is available have not been confirmed in the published information.

Ten Minutes by Car from Chungju Station; Check Bus Information Separately on Site
The Korea Tourism Organization describes the journey from Chungju Station to Chungju Taekkyeonwon as taking 10 minutes by car. For foreign travelers, the simplest option is to use a taxi or private car from Chungju Station. Bus route numbers, stop names, and walking time from the stop to the facility were not available in the published information.
There are discrepancies among the listed addresses. The visitor-provided address is 3324 Jungwon-daero, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Chungju Youth Training Center, while the facility’s official website lists 3326 Jungwon-daero, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do (562 Hoam-dong), postal code 27411. For navigation, enter the official address, 3326 Jungwon-daero, first and check that the destination is shown near the Youth Training Center.
If You Need to Avoid Stairs, Request Access Through the Rear Entrance
Chungju Taekkyeonwon has one parking space reserved for visitors with disabilities. Since information about general parking availability and parking fees was not published, those using a rental car should call the main number before departing to ask whether parking is available.
There are stairs at the main entrance, but the rear entrance at the back of the building has no level difference and is accessible to wheelchair users. There is also guidance stating that wheelchair access is possible because there is no level difference up to the entrance. Wheelchair users should not stop at the front stairs; instead, they should ask staff how to use the rear entrance. Access for strollers and the internal viewing route through the training hall have not been confirmed separately.
Phone Number and Official Address to Save Before Visiting
The official main telephone number is 043-850-7304, and the fax number is 043-844-0337. The official website is http://www.taekkyeonwon.com/. When asking about operating hours, closing days, experience reservations, and access to the training hall, calling the main number is the most direct method.
Rather than planning an unreserved visit based only on the free general admission information, first determine whether your purpose is a group experience for 10 or more people, attending a 2026 performance, or participating in the citizens’ school. The recommended visit duration, current availability of experiences for general visitors, photography restrictions, and whether cash payments are accepted were not confirmed in the published information.
