APAP Art Walks at Anyang Pavilion from 2005 to 2026

The APAP Art Tour is a program that explores works from the Anyang Public Art Project, which began in 2005, by walking alongside a professional docent. Since the project has placed art, sculpture, architecture, video, design, and performances in everyday spaces such as Anyang's forests, streams, and roadsides, it felt more like following the city's expressions than passing through an exhibition hall. The 2026 regular tour of Anyang Art Park runs twice a day, at 10:30 and 14:00, every Tuesday through Sunday from March 10 to November 30. It is closed on Mondays, and the tour meets at Anyang Pavilion, located at 180 Yesul Park-ro, Manan-gu, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, and lasts approximately 60–90 minutes. The route takes in around 15–20 APAP works along forests and streams, giving it a different character from simply viewing one work and turning back. The tour departs only when at least two people have booked, and because it includes a Samsung Mountain trekking route, comfortable sneakers and light clothing suitable for movement seemed like the right choice.

What I especially enjoyed was gradually learning through the docent's explanations why structures hidden in the landscape had been placed there. Friends who enjoy both architecture and walking would probably linger longer over the stories connected to each location than over the size of the works themselves.

A Route Recommended for Foreign Friends: Gwanak Station Exit 2 and Hagun Park

The nearest subway station is Gwanak Station on Line 1, and it takes about 30 minutes on foot from Exit 2 to Anyang Pavilion. If the walk feels too long, you can use the Anyang Art Park open-air parking lot or the Anyang Art Park Intersection bus stop. If you drive, you need to use the public off-street parking lot at the Art Park rather than a parking lot operated by the pavilion itself. From April to October, paid weekday hours are 09:00–19:00, with the first 30 minutes costing 400 won. On weekends during the same period, it operates from 09:00–21:00, so allowing plenty of time before the tour was helpful.

It is best to set realistic expectations regarding language access. The Korea Tourism Organization's English page lists the 2026 operating period, departures at 10:30 and 14:00, the address of Anyang Pavilion, and admission fees of 3,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for people aged 19 and under. However, the 2026 tour information does not separately mention English-speaking docents, interpretation, or on-site English signage. Regular tours can be booked through Naver Booking or paid for by card on site, so I brought a card rather than cash. After the tour, it is worth continuing to the permanent APAP Archive exhibition at the same Anyang Pavilion. Art Park is described as an area that rises alongside restaurants next to Byeongmokan Valley, making it convenient to continue a meal in the Art Park area before or after the tour. The pavilion's curves, set against the stream and trees, seemed likely to make a stronger impression when followed along the route in person than when viewed in photographs. Samsung Mountain Trekking and the 20:00 Night Tour: What to Prepare

As of August 10, 2026, regular outdoor docent-led art explanations are suspended during the peak summer heat in July and August, while indoor tours of Anyang Pavilion continue as normal. Therefore, if visiting in midsummer, it is better not to take the regular outdoor route for granted, but to check the indoor exhibition and night-tour schedules separately.

The night tour runs on the last Wednesday of each month from May 27 to October 28, 2026, except in July. It departs at 20:00 on May 27, June 24, and August 26, and at 19:00 on September 30 and October 28, lasting approximately 80 minutes. The fee is 5,000 won for both adults and people aged 19 and under, and arriving 20 minutes before departure is recommended. For both regular and night tours, bookings for the following month's schedule open on the 15th of every month, and same-day cancellations and refunds are not allowed. Since both the regular Anyang Art Park tour and the night tour require at least two bookings to depart, solo travelers may feel more comfortable paying after their itinerary is confirmed.

The Pyeongchon route starts in front of the Hagun Park Open School. It runs for approximately 60 minutes at 10:30 and 14:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, from March 10 to November 30, 2026, and covers around ten works in urban parks and along roadsides. However, at least five people must apply by phone five days in advance, so it is better suited to a visit planned with friends than to an impromptu solo trip. The 2026 tour information does not separately list restroom locations or wheelchair-accessible routes. The starting point is fixed at Anyang Pavilion, and the inquiry telephone number is 031-687-0548. If you need mobility assistance, it is safer to ask about route slopes and rest areas before departure.

15–20 Works and 3,000 Won: A Slow Museum Experience in Anyang

This was a great route for foreign friends who want to hear not only the titles of artworks in a museum, but also about the context of the forests, streams, and architecture where the works are located. The regular Anyang Art Park tour, which costs 3,000 won for adults and includes a 60–90-minute walk past 15–20 works with a docent, was not expensive. With Pyeongchon and the night tour as alternative options, it was easy to choose according to one's travel preferences.

In Anyang, the works do not block the landscape; instead, the landscape becomes part of the works. Even if you walk a little farther from Gwanak Station, the time spent starting in front of Anyang Pavilion, slowly looking up, and taking in the surroundings seemed likely to remain the best scene of the trip.
