A water-play festival set in the middle of a valley in the peak of summer
When people think of a Korean summer festival, they usually picture a city plaza or a riverside, but the Jangsu Cool Valley Festival is a little different. It takes place at Banghwadong Natural Recreation Forest in Beonam-myeon, Jangsu-gun, Jeollabuk-do — in other words, the festival site is a deep mountain valley itself. Surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, the air stays cooler than in the city even in midsummer, and the stream water is so cold that your feet start to feel numb after just five seconds. I came here to escape August heat waves, and as soon as I entered the recreation forest, the sound of cicadas and flowing water cooled the heat like air conditioning. The name "Cool Valley" was no exaggeration.
This festival is a rare kind of event in Korea, held in a valley during the summer vacation season. Now in its fourth year, the Jangsu Cool Valley Festival will be held at the same location for three days from July 17 to 19, 2026. The theme is "A valley embraced by nature, a day where happiness stays." Since the core of the event is cooling off by getting into the stream, this is the kind of festival where swimwear and water-play gear matter more than stylish clothes.

A foreign traveler’s day: from arrival to water play and heading home
The first good news to know is the admission fee. Starting in 2025, the venue admission fee was completely abolished, so anyone can enter for free. There is no need to worry about advance ticket reservations or sold-out tickets — you can just go. That said, you need to bring your own water-play gear. I packed the basics — swimwear, a rash guard, aqua shoes, a change of clothes, a towel, and a waterproof pouch — and none of it was wasted. The stream bed is slippery and full of rocks, so aqua shoes are much safer than flip-flops. Because it is a high-altitude area, evenings can get surprisingly chilly, so bring a dry outer layer as well.
The problem is transportation. To be honest, this place is deep in the mountains and not easy to reach by public transit. The most realistic options are a rental car or a taxi, and if you go by your own car, you can use the recreation forest parking lot. If you are traveling only by public transportation, you need to come by intercity bus to Jangsu Common Bus Terminal and then transfer to a county bus or a taxi bound for Beonam. However, county buses run infrequently, so if you do not check the timetable in advance, you may end up waiting for a long time. That is why I traveled with companions in a rented car, and if a foreign friend cannot drive, I would recommend taking a taxi from Jangsu-eup. Be sure to check the same-day bus timetable before departure.
Once you arrive on site, the water-play begins in earnest. The main attraction is the giant water-play area called "Cool Valley Water Park." There is a 20-meter swimming pool and a water slide, where children keep sliding nonstop, along with participatory games such as the "Water Challenge Mission," in which people compete with water guns and water balloons, and the "Underwater Family Contest," where families cross stepping stones together. What I remember most was the trout-catching experience, where you catch trout barehanded and then grill and eat them right away. When I finally managed to hold onto the slippery trout with both hands, applause broke out all around me.

When the sun goes down, the atmosphere changes completely. As soon as "Cool Valley Valley Night," which combines water play and EDM performances, begins, the valley comes alive with people soaked to the skin dancing to the music. In previous years, the festival has hosted nighttime stages such as EXID Hyerin's DJ set and a DJ performance by NewJeansnim (comedian Yoon Seong-ho), showing how much emphasis is placed on evening shows. When you get hungry, head to the "Youth Pocha" run by young people from Jangsu-gun. They serve fusion dishes made with Jangsu's signature agricultural products and specialties such as Korean beef and apples, along with alcoholic drinks and snacks, so it is a great place to have a drink with side dishes. There is also a grilling zone where you can enjoy Jangsu Korean beef at a reasonable price.
Things to know before you go, so you are less likely to be caught off guard
Since the nighttime performance is the main event, it is most important to plan your return route in advance. At night, when the Valley Night ends, public transportation essentially stops in this mountain area. So if you are not driving yourself, I strongly recommend staying one night at the recreation forest, a family vacation village, or a nearby campsite. Banghwadong Natural Recreation Forest has lodging facilities such as a forest culture recreation hall, log cabins, and an auto camping site, so you can lie down and rest immediately after a tiring day of water play. Accommodation during peak season fills up quickly, so once your schedule is set, book right away.
Let me also mention payment and cash in advance. At food stalls and pocha in the countryside valley, some places may not accept cards, so it is more comfortable to bring some cash. And this is a local festival visited overwhelmingly by Korean families rather than foreign tourists. It is hard to expect English guidance or interpretation services. However, since the event focuses mainly on water play and games, you can still enjoy it even without language, and the charm lies in being able to see the real summer scenery of the Korean countryside up close. Because the stream water is really cold, families with young children should pay attention to body temperature, and it is also a good idea to bring a rain poncho in case of sudden showers.
Another thing: for active travelers, the "Jangsu Cool Valley Trail Race" held alongside the festival is worth considering. This year it has been expanded to two days and will run from July 18 to 19, so you can enjoy Jangsu's forests and valleys in a more dynamic way while taking part in the festival.
So, who is this for?
I recommend it for family travelers who want the experience of throwing themselves into the water in real nature rather than the glamour of an urban festival, and for foreign friends who want to experience a summer in the Korean countryside. If you can get around by car and stay overnight, your satisfaction will be much higher. If you are tired of the city's heat, come escape it in this cool valley at least once. In that moment when you dip your feet into the icy water and listen to the cicadas, summer will feel quite bearable.
