A summer night where a 387-meter wooden bridge becomes the entire stage
In Andong, there is Wolyeonggyo, a bridge that is beautiful even in daytime. It is a wooden pedestrian bridge 387 m long and 3.6 m wide, and when it opened in 2003, it became one of the longest wooden bridges in the country. But when the sun sets and the lights come on, the atmosphere changes completely. The bridge, dyed in red and purple light, reflects 그대로 on the lake, turning dreamlike to the point that you wonder if it is really the same bridge you saw in the daytime. Wolyeong Yahaeng is a festival that uses the entire Wolyeonggyo area as a nighttime stage. In 2026, it runs for ten days, from Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 9. You could say it is Andong's signature summer night event, cooling the midsummer heat with moonlight.
The core of this festival is the concept of the '8 Nights.' It is divided into eight themes: night view (space design), night road (hands-on experiences), night history, night performance, night exhibition, night food, night stay, and night market, all designed so visitors can enjoy Andong's cultural heritage at night. Around Wolyeonggyo are scattered national heritage sites such as Imcheonggak, Beopheungsaji Seven-story Brick Pagoda, and Andong Seokbinggo, and the point is not just to look at them, but to experience them through performances and activities. Now in its eighth year, it is Andong's representative summer night event, and the program continues to evolve little by little every year.

Following the love story of Won-i's mother from 450 years ago
The reason Wolyeong Yahaeng is more than a simple night-view festival is the story contained in this bridge. Wolyeonggyo holds the story of Won-i's mother, often called the Joseon-era version of Ghost (Love and Spirit). Won-i's mother longed for her husband who had passed away at a young age and wrote a heartbreaking letter, then braided her own hair to make traditional straw shoes.
In 1998, during land development work in Jeongsang-dong, the letter and straw shoes were excavated along with the remains of a man from a tomb, and the couple's love became known to the world. That is why the bridge itself was designed in the shape of the straw shoes, and nearby there is a Won-i's Mother Theme Trail. During the festival, you can experience this story firsthand through programs such as the 'Moonlight Mailbox, Letter from Won-i's Mother.' If you go after learning the background, crossing the bridge feels completely different.
There is plenty to see. The most eye-catching is the street performance called 'Wolyeong Bobsang (Wolyeong Jangsu).' It vividly reenacts a procession of Joseon-era traveling merchants from Folk Village Road to Andong Municipal Museum, and visitors can join in folk games and take photos together. In addition, 'Wolyeong Gaekju,' which recreates a Joseon-era marketplace, along with a picnic zone and the food truck 'Yeongnak Restaurant,' fill the area with food and places to rest. At 'National Heritage Playground,' you can experience traditional games such as Andong Noddari Bapgi, Andong Chajeon Nori, and the 'Andong Samneolgi Swing,' inspired by Andong hemp weaving. Performances of intangible heritage, such as Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori and Noddari Bapgi demonstrations, are also not to be missed.

A foreign traveler's day — from arrival to heading back
What is most reassuring before going is that there is no separate admission fee. Wolyeonggyo itself is an area open free of charge year-round, and the festival is also an outdoor event you can enjoy without a separate ticket. So there is no worry about 'sold out.' However, some hands-on programs (such as making traditional liquor or trying on traditional hanbok) may have limited on-site capacity, so if there is an experience you really want to do, it is best to check the operating time on the official page in advance and arrive early.
It is better to decide your arrival route in advance. If you are driving, you can use Wolyeonggyo Public Parking Lot (1st lot), Gaemoknaru Parking Lot (2nd lot), Talgongbang (3rd lot), World Water Forum Memorial Center, Confucian Land Public Parking Lot, and Nakdong Riverside Parking Lot. But according to reviews, on weekend evenings the 1st lot fills up early, so many people end up moving to the 2nd lot. That is why using the shuttle buses is a smart choice. Two shuttle routes run at roughly 10-minute intervals: Route 1 goes Gaemoknaru ↔ Imcheonggak ↔ Nakdong Riverside Parking Lot, and Route 2 goes Gaemoknaru ↔ World Water Forum Memorial Center ↔ Confucian Land. They operate from Friday to Sunday, 17:00 to 23:00. From Andong Station to Wolyeonggyo, it is convenient to take a city bus or a taxi, but since this is a nighttime event, make sure to check in advance when public transportation stops running for the return trip.
At the venue, card and mobile payments are generally accepted at food trucks and market stalls, but some flea market or small booths may only take cash. It is reassuring to bring around 10,000 won in cash. The language guidance is mostly in Korean, so there is not as much English signage or interpretation as one might hope, but in fact this festival is centered on 'walking and viewing' night scenery and performances, so even if communication is limited, you can still enjoy the atmosphere 충분히. The merchant procession, mask dance performances, and puppet shows are almost free of language barriers.

Practical tips to avoid a wasted trip
First of all, there are a lot of people. The 2025 event attracted a total of more than 280,000 visitors, even in the summer heat and rain, so it is very popular. The busiest time is around 8 p.m., when performances are concentrated. If you want relaxed photos, it is better to go in early right after sunset and secure a spot, then view the peak night scenery after it gets dark.
Preparing for the weather is also important. Nights in Andong from late July to early August are humid and muggy, so wear light clothes and bring mosquito repellent. There are insects by the river. Also, since it is summer, sudden showers are common, but the event usually continues even in the rain, so bringing a small umbrella or a rain poncho makes things more comfortable. You will walk quite a bit along the bridge and trails, so sneakers are the right choice.
- Free admission, no separate reservation needed — no worry about sold-out tickets
- Bring some cash (for small market stalls and flea markets)
- Make active use of the Friday-Sunday shuttle bus (17:00-23:00, about every 10 minutes)
- Mosquito repellent + rain poncho + sneakers
- If there is an experience you really want to do, arrive early and join before the capacity fills up
So, who is it recommended for?
It is perfect for people who want to spend a 'slow summer night' escaping the heat, and for those who prefer places with stories and atmosphere over flashy amusement-park-style festivals. It is especially good for families and couples. Spaces for children and family visitors are popular on their own, so there is plenty to enjoy with kids, and for couples, simply walking slowly across the lit-up bridge is enough. If you are a foreign friend who wants to experience Korean tradition and a nightscape all at once, I would definitely recommend having dinner with Andong jjimdak and then heading over to Wolyeonggyo.
